11) Message boards : Generalized Fermat Prime Search : Genefer 3.3.5 is live! (Message 146840)

The Mac version of 3.3.5 is now live.
12) Message boards : Number crunching : 2021 Challenge Schedule (Message 146756)
Posted 226 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
Maybe PG could set up a drop on / drop off challenge, where ALL work done on SoB could be counted. Then those really favouring SoB and speaking about a year long challenge, can continue competing with those feeling and favouring SoB a lot, for the entire year, while those needing to do something different from time to time, can drop on / drop off as they suits. If PG incist that there needs to be a SoB challenge and it somehow interfears with the challenge schedule, to have an unofficial 2021 year scoreboard, counting the effort done on SoB over the year, then maybe an unofficial year long drop in / drop off challenge for TRP could be put in its place.

Tour de SoB, all year long, hopefully with a prime!

New proposed schedule:

Jan 2-3: Good Riddance 2020! Challenge: DIV
Jan 5-6: Yuri’s Night Challenge: WW
Jan 8-9: PrimeGrid’s 16th Birthday Challenge: ESP
Jan 11-12: World Emoji Day Challenge: GFN 17-Low
Jan 14-15: Once In a Blue Moon Challenge: PSP
Jan 17-18: Martin Gardner’s Birthday Challenge: GCW
Jan 20-21: Euler’s Constant Challenge: AP27
Jan 23-30: Geminids Shower Challenge: GFN 21, GFN 22, DYFL
Feb 1-28: Tour de Primes
Mar 2 - Dec 31: Tour de SoB

The Mac 3.3.5 is up and running on Dev if anyone wants to test it.
14) Message boards : Proth Prime Search : Can PPS-Mega be a Fermat Divisor? (Message 146721)
Posted 227 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
I know PPSE and PPS can be but is there some upper limit that would not make that possible for PPS-Mega?

Yes, but it's unlikely because of the high K that is currently being searched in PPS-MEGA.

There are two known mega-prime Fermat divisors (I think it's just two), and PrimeGrid found both of them. The most recent one was found on the Fermat Divisor search, but it's still a Proth prime and theoretically could have been found in the PPS or or PPS MEGA projects.

The first one, found in 2014, actually was found on our PPS-MEGA prime search.

15) Message boards : Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun Prime Search : Which near-finds are shown? (Message 146692)
Posted 228 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
Nice! Apparently, the WSS search on PRPNet did not miss any finds or near-finds, but good to be in new territory now (with Wall-Sun-Sun, that is). I verified it with my PARI function. Looks like everything is working perfectly. /JeppeSN

We were only double checking for primes, not special instances. We were skipping *all* special instances until we were past the PRPNet range. The original plan was to start the current search where PRPnet left off, but I wanted to make sure we didn't miss any actual primes. That would have been tragic.

Checking for missed special instances would have been exceptionally difficult because we don't have a definitive list of what had been discovered previously.

From this point on (in WSS), we will report everything that's found. But until now, we've only been looking for primes.

PrimeGrid's discoveries can be found here: https://www.primegrid.com/stats_ww.php

The menus link to the page, as does the WW portion of the subproject status page.

Your own personal discoveries are linked to in the same place as other primes and AP27s. Example: http://www.primegrid.com/show_user.php?userid=56804

And congratulations, Grzegorz!

The leading edge of WW has passed where we stopped WSS on PRPNet, so we may be seeing new special instances soon.

Maybe one more stupid question? but...
What will PrimeGrid do if tasks for one or another subproject (for example SoB) become too large (like recently disabled CPU GFN22)? Can it be prevented?

That was shutdown because when I turned it on, I mistakenly believed it supported multithreading. It should never have been turned on in the first place.
19) Message boards : Project Staging Area : Current n-limit of factorials & primorials? (Message 146630)
Posted 230 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
How many candidates have been sieved already? PRPnet says up to 280000 for factorials and 3200000 for primorials. It'll probably be half a year or more until this is reached for both projects. Or are there more candidates sieved but not prepared as tasks yet?

If not, what will be done when the limit is reached? Unless the project is abandoned sieving will be required. rogue said it's possible to modify mfsieve to work with P < 2^62 instead of the current 2^52 limit.

Are there any plans yet?

There's lots, lots more than what's currently loaded into the PRPNet server. It's very rare that we load everything onto a server. We like to keep database sizes relatively small. That helps with performance, it helps with how long it takes to back up the database, and it helps with how much disk space is occupied by the database backups. You should never, ever, assume that what you see in the server is all that there is.

The bottom line is that it's not running out anytime soon. I'd say it's 50/50 about which happens first: One of those two projects runs out, or SpaceX puts the first people on Mars.
20) Message boards : Problems and Help : Primegrid not downloading more tasks in advance (Message 146595)
Posted 232 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
That setting also applies to the tasks running in n your GPU, and unless you’re running PPS-Sieve you may care about those tasks finishing first.

Also, unless it changed (I’m not running the latest BOINC client), BOINC should still download the next task between 2 and 3 minutes before the current task finishes in order to prevent you from runners my out. It should be ok to set the cache to 0 l, unless you also set the project priority to 0.
