I hope someone can suggest something as the challenge is really close.
I have a computer that stops primegridding until I go to the computer and log in - unlock the screen. And then it is working again.
This has happened at least 3 times in the last month or 2.
I am only running CPU tasks right now - it just happened 2-3 hours ago (me discovering it) - sat there for about 20,000 sec doing nothing. It has happened while running CPU and GPU - both stop. As far as I know it is not a heat issue. The fans on the water cooler for the CPU are working fine. I suppose I cannot be sure about the pump. A couple of hours ago, when I noticed that no work had been happening, I logged in to the computer and then there was a sound of something periodically 'winding up' and then 'winding down'. I assume a fan. It wasn't the fans in the water cooler as I had a crude way of testing them - I stopped them - 1 at a time with a finger. And with each fan stopped the sound of winding up and down still happened. 2-3 hours later there is no sound of 'winding up' and 'winding down'.
It is a computer by itself in the front room. What I will do is swap it for 1 in the lounge where I can more easily keep a closer look at what is going on.
Right now the CPU is running at 60-61 degrees C which strange as this sounds, may be a bit warmer than normal. But still 20 degrees below any possibility of some automation to halt proceedings - probably 35 degrees below that.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Ok I thought I should look up some things. The event log. There is no event log before when I logged in about 3 hours ago.

Here is the log:

Based on observations of my own systems, I think it's related to Windows updates and automatic reboots. If, when you boot the system, it prompts you to select a user (or enter a password) before completing the process, Windows won't load startup items of which many are user specific, like BOINC when not installed as a service.

If you don't have a password, you can set Windows to automatically log in to your account and then as long as there are no other hangups (like the 2004 update's survey screen), BOINC will start as usual.

One of my X5675 systems has a motherboard with incomplete Xeon support and won't POST if you reboot; it only runs after a full power down. It has a similar unresponsive frequency to what you have going on when Windows does an update (and none of my Win 10 systems will update at the same time, dang it!).

Fan winding might be from the CPU temp being on the cusp of high/low fan speed settings. Speedfan is a great program you can set speed curves with to avoid that annoyance.

Cheers. It is behaving differently to my other systems - but my other systems are where I check them more often - I am likely to agree to the update manually rather than windows choosing. It would mean it did an update somewhere between midnight and 2 am last night.
Windows - it is always windows. Your computer is on fire - it is most likely windows :)

I had never noticed the fans changing speed - I thought I had set a curve in the bios and Link4 where that wouldn't happen. It is winter here and the computer had been at idle and I wasn't using the GPU - I can see how all that could be a unique cool situation.

I will see if there is an update setting that has changed.
I will also leave the screen unlocked. If I ever find it stopped working and needing to be logged in again it is most likely windows update.

During the challenge I will also force windows to not update

These messages usually appears when system crashed and file system has been not shut down correctly - mentioned files have a garbage (usually all zeros) inside.

Try to run Windows "event viewer" and look for errors like "Previous shutdown was unexpected" or similar.

Yes it is something un-fun like that.

I am getting many of these:

The application specific permission settings do not grant local activation permission for the COM server application with CSLID

Could this be faulty RAM?
I will also check my anti-virus to see if there have been events
Also when I first got this computer, the CPU wasn't seated properly. I sent the computer back and they discovered and hopefully fixed that.
Could windows have gone screwy? I mean more screwy than normal?
I am using Norton anti-virus with whatever settings it uses. Could there be a firewall issue?

This computer is very sick:
Warning
svchost (3848, D, 12) SRUjet. The database format feature version 9080 (0x2378) could not be used due to current database format 1568.20.0 by the parameter Dx410022D8 (8920 IJET efvAllowHigherPersistedFormat)

And other warnings too many to write down.

I think I will be getting someone in to look at that computer

If it's not overclocked then random blue screens are likely to be memory or psu related.
If you want to do something while you wait for them then you should get a memory test going to try and rule that out.

I'll get on to that memory test.
I don't get BSODs - not that I have seen anyway.
Nothing is overclocked.
If I hadn't been pointed in the direction of the event viewer by stream, I wouldn't have got that my computer has the digital equivalent of ebola. And here I am still making it search for primes. I am being mean for a reason - to get more error and warning events that may help diagnose it. I will let it rest tomorrow morning to see if I still get as many warnings.

The RAM failed Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.
About to run MemTest86 - if I can find a USB flash drive
In hindsight, such an extensive range of errors and warnings points to something systemic - and RAM is the first thing on that list.

This is a bsod, you've just got it set to auto-reboot after:
The computer has rebooted from a bug check. The bug check was 0x0000001a (more info in brackets).

I am the only user of the PC and I think I installed BOINC to be available to all users - if that answers the question.

It is a major pain.
Tech thought it more likely that the SSD was at fault due to it's behaviour on re-install of windows. And in this context, the memory test I did may have been meaningless. As the computer is under warranty, he recommends it be sent back to the shop. Which is a dilemma. At this stage in covid19 I will have to pay for transport each way and that will be more expensive than paying for a new SSD.

Ask them if you replace the SSD is it still under warranty, in effect tell them your dilemma and let them try and help you. If they say no I would ship it because if it's more than the SSD than they should be able to figure that out too. If they say 'yes but not the SSD' anymore than I would replace it with a good one and see if that fixes it, and if not then ship it back.

The RAM turned out to be faulty. Nearly 8000 faults when I ran MemTest86.
It has been returned and refunded as 4Gb 4000 MHz is not available.
I bought some temporary RAM (2 x 4Gb 2666 MHz) while waiting for the outcome.
I have now bought and installed 4 x 8Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 MHz 1.2 Volt and back to running 4 channel memory.

A thing that I also discovered is that the MB MOS temp was high - 85.5 degrees C
The highest temp on any other system is 62 degrees C.
I ordered a high quality fan with the memory.

As I am limited by laziness and positions to place the new fan I have a question.
Am I totally crazy to sit the fan on the GPU?
A bit crazy is OK.
The top side of the GPU has no fans or exposed circuitry.
The GPU is a 2080Ti which looks and feels like it won't move with a small bit of extra weight on it.
The edges of the fan unit are plastic.
(A smallest side of the fan is sitting on the GPU - obviously to get air flowing toward the MB)

The MB MOS temp is now 74 degrees C - much better.
No change in GPU temp.

You can put fans anywhere you want too just do it temporarily so you can see if it helps or hurts before you lock it down. Do you leave the side of the case on or off? If on then you can even cut a hole and put a fan in it and point it at the gpu so it's not actually attached to the gpu.

I leave the side of the case on. It is a pretty good quality one - Fractal Design Define R6 with good dust filtering - which I have recently cleaned. It's the mosfets on the motherboard that need cooling - there may actually be a better position higher than where the fan is now.
I can see that cutting a hole in the side (and I could add a filter too) would be ideal but it would involve a bit of hardware to do it.
Maybe I can do something equally crude as what I have now and suspend the fan within the case from above - and that will give me more options to get the ideal position.

you can get fan mounts for pci slots: like this
This one includes the fan but I'm sure you can get a bracket like this to mount a standard fan on: swivel fan.

2nd option with 3 hinges is really cool - perfect. Cheers.
For the PCI slot fan mount (which is also very cool) I would need to move the GPU from PCI slot 1 to 3 which even though it is another CPU 16x, it may slow the GPU down.

Cool I ordered a set of brackets for the pci slot...I've never seen that before
