How many times of each test does it take on average to get a prime number:

I want to know this for the subprojects proth and 321

In addition also how can you see a result chain of prime numbers (even if there are 2) from AP26

Thanks (love the project though),
Michael

On average about 1 in 4 000 Proth tests reveals a prime. I don't know for 321. Bear in mind that you might be lucky and find one much sooner or unlucky and find one much later. If you do lots of Proth tests however you'll find about 1 in 4 000 is prime.

I got my first prime in Proth tests after ~10000 WU completed, now I have 6 primes and 44500 WU. It seems I need more luck :)
According to server stats there are 1 of 4500 Proth tests gives a prime.
As for 321-project 9 of 13000 are prime. Percent is higher, but these LLR takes much more time than Proth.

Sorry but for 321LLR the stats say 0.005 %.
That amounts to 1/0.005 * 100 = 20000 WUs/prime. With each WU running nearly 12 hours you would need 10000 days with one core. The rest could be calculated with fingers.

IAs for 321-project 9 of 13000 are prime. Percent is higher, but these LLR takes much more time than Proth.

13000 is only the number of tests in the 5M-6M range (so far), where only 1 prime was found. If you count all tests from 0M-6M, you get 9 primes out of 264k tests, so it's one prime in about 30k tests. But there were also ~64k tests in the 3M-4M range, where no prime was found, while most of the primes were found in the 0M-2M range (7 primes in ~95k tests). So you can not expect one prime every 30k tests in the future. ;)

Michael welcome to the project -- finding prime numbers is a bit of a challange -- I did about 11000 WU's before I got my first - a reportable that made it into the top 5000 -- over 6 month of crunching PPS LLR I have averaged a prime every 4700 work units -- I started with a couple of old P4's & a Duo core --- but it gets a bit addictive -- I now have 17 computers (about 30 CPU's) all crunching for PG -- I think I'm getting around 2 primes per week now on average and most are reportable---

While finding primes is difficult it's a good & friendly community --- Like roadrunner for instance -- he's thrown out the challenge and trying to overtake me in the stats --- what he doesn't know is I've hooked up a secret weapon (If I can get the bloody core temps under control) -- watch this space!!!

PPS LLR are fairly short -- time to complete depends on type of computer --Duo cores & quads take 5 to 10 minutes per core -- Pentium 4's with Hyper thread 15 to 30 minutes-- single core P4's are same as duo cores. A P3 will take about 2.5 hours

There are 2 different length of WU's as we are working on 2 different ranges at the same time but the times above pretty much cover them both.

Thanx, I think I've got the bug now! As to saving a few for everyone else, I thought the Fundamental Theory of Arithmatic had proved that if integers are infinite, so are primes, as all integers are the product of primes? However I'm also aware of Selberg/Conrey/Berry et al views on different infinities.... : ( (!!)
It would be interesting to find a zero of zeta of S that didn't fit the Critical Line at 1/2....

Anyway enjoy finding more primes and the community. Oh and if you have any gecko or rat anecdotes DoES and I would like you to share them.

The FTA and the Prime Number Theorem both state.....OY!! I ain't your teacher ('Ain't = quaint English to suggest in the natural state, "I am Not your Teacher"...), LOOK IT UP N THE WEB)... I suggest a common & reliable source is Wolfram....., etc, etc...
Failing which, Google - Conrey, Selberg, Berry, Louis de Brange, Bernard Riemann(the chap who is responsible for all this corfuffle!) or give Atle Selberg a ring (his number is readily available worldwide.....)
I'm off to find a zero of zeta of s that ISN't on the critical line, at 1/2....
Cheers!

I think you have just invented a new acronym; IAYT (I ain't your teacher). Excellent. I shall be using that. Shame it is not a TLA.

According to server stats there are 1 of 4500 Proth tests gives a prime.

Don't think I'll bother with the lottery this week...

And, according to my calculations, I've just passed the 90% probability mark for finding a prime if the occurrence is 1 in 4500 :-(

Perhaps it's more like a bus: you wait for ages then three come along together.

I was hoping that airing the subject in public might give fate a kick, the way it often does, but no (sigh)

Don't forget that once you've completed an LLR test, and it says the number is not prime, the probability that you will find a prime with that test jumps from 1/4500 to 0. Though you could reasonably have expected a 90% chance that you would find a prime in those 10121 tests, there is now a 0% chance that you will. (Maybe slightly higher if you double-check your own result and invalidate your first result, but you get the idea.)

On the other hand, if you complete 10000 more tests, there is a 90% chance you will find at least one prime (if your calculations were right).

I went through 8500 WU with 0 Proth primes, then discovered 3 in one day. The key is persistence. My ratio is currently 1 proth every 3500 WU, but it varies. It seems to be either feast or famine, so again persistence is key...

1 in 4500 might be a little too optimistic. Probability decreases as numbers get bigger. I found an average of 1 in ~7500 at current number ranges. Based on >500K tests this should be a more or less accurate average.

I think 8 SGS primes have been found out of around 1000000 candidates. Of course the more you concentrate your resources on searching for primes the more of them and the fewer aliens or whatever you find :) . Well worth sticking to it in my view; it is good fun to find a prime.

Cheers!

ps I probably just got thrown out of Angela's Cottage for this post!
