Hi all,
I'm currently using 6.2.12 and have a few questions about upgrading. Should I run out all tasks before attempting? I am learning about Linux and am still very new so please be patient!! I've downloaded 6.4.5 to my desktop and don't know what to do with it now. Would it work the same as--- apt-get update apt-get install boinc client boinc manager in a terminal window, or is 6.2.12 ( was installed from package manager ) all that is there.
Running 8.10 Ubuntu
I've tried to open the 6.4.5 package on my desktop and don't know how. Even a nudge to the right place will be appreciated.
Thanks all, Jack

Why do you need the new boinc-version? It won't do anything at all to the crunching speed..
I'd reccommand you to wait till the ubuntu pakkage sources are updated, then there also is no need to complete workunits first or something like that, the updated boinc will complete the old workunits.

Don't bother; the 6.4.5 BOINC Manager has been designed mainly for use with CUDA apps. i.e. Nvidia GPU projects, namely SETI & GPUGRID. With GPUs in mind, the devs didn't really take CPUs into consideration. The main problem ATM is that the ETAs for WUs for CPU-only projects are completely nonsensical until a couple of WUs have actually been crunched - the BM then "learns" how long they take and it all works itself out.
Plays havoc with scheduling and stuff until it figures out the correct times. Banal example, I installed 6.4.5 on my WinDoze box, got it up and running and it D/Led 2 ABC WUs with ETAs of 50+ hrs. They only took 3 and 5 hours respectively, but the darn BM wouldn't D/L anything else until they were finished, because the scheduler thought that my box would be busy for a couple of days.
Theoretically, this should be resolved when they release ver.6.5.x......

Maybe I'll wait then. Thanks for the input on 6.4.5, 6.2.12 says it's a pre-release and may not function properly when Boinc starts and I get the red message to upgrade every so often. I've not noticed anything wrong and it runs fine . I'll take the " if it aint broke don't fix it " approach then. I'm not planning on using my video card . Thanks, Jack
