11) Message boards : Number crunching : Does PCI-E 8x vs. 16x matter? (Message 122635)
Posted 745 days ago by Profile sir sant
I'm running two gtx 1060 3gb cards, one is running pcie speed x16 and the other is running pcie speed x4. It is due to mobos limitations. In pps sieve there is 0 difference. In ap27 there is slight difference. So no worries. In collatz and moo there is no difference. So unless something brutal is being run, there are no worries, i think.

Mike
Thank You

it works

44 :07 mins/sec per Task

Im so glad that you have supported me,

Thanks

good Luck

If that runtime is for the gtx1080ti, then that is bad, i think. My gtx1060 3gb ap27 wu runtime is about 42minuts (2500sec). I run 1 wu per gpu. I have some old driver installed: 378.66.
I only update when there is some need, so maybe the driver is 1,5 years old now by now, and maybe its not the fastest for ap27.

The rx580, that is in the same pc, sadly, is not doing very well: ~6000sec per wu.
Cheers.

Microsoft may have given you a nice New Year's Day surprise. Check if BOINC is suspended while Windows is prompting you for a reboot.

EDIT The suspension is all mine.

"Your PC will restart several times." That's Microsoft's contribution.

I don't believe that's microsoft's contribution, i have no surprises and my 3 old computers are running on windows 7 all the time.

Grrr...
What in the name of all that is holy are the top guys using as computers? How much money do they have to invest? I'm so envious, I'm also very happy that I'm not sitting at the bottom of the list.

They are using cubic dollars... as computers?
I was running on 5 gpus, and was placed 100-th.
TNG had 18 times more powuh on hand.
I was using 20000 gflops peak by boinc, whatever that means.

Thanx people, got my answer.

So i was looking for some guide in the message boards, but i did not find any.
So i read some time ago somewhere that amd cpus are better at sieving and pretty much rubbish at everything else. So i set my old amd phenomII hexa to sieve and it was much faster at getting work done.

Now i'd like to use my old i3 2,2ghz laptop more efficiently. Have been running random subprojects on it: http://www.primegrid.com/results.php?hostid=490771 it's really slow.
What cpu subproject would run more efficiently on it? I am running 2wu-s at once (that's 50% cpu usage in boinc manager) cause it's a 2core 4thread cpu, and i think 1wu per 1core is the way to go?

If there is a thread about it somewhere, please feel free to point me that way.
If there is no thread about it, i'd appreciate it if somebody smart would create one, and not too complex or people like me wont get it.
Thanks in advance.

Thanx for the feedback people, i now know things that i did not know before.

Mikey, how do i run two wu-s on a gpu? And how do i dedicate a core?
I'm not that good with software.

So, the last new nvidia card i bought was an asus 3slot gtx570 way back, and now i have bought an asus dual fan 2slot gtx 1060 3gb one.
So i installed it today and immediately started to run pps sieve on it.

Wu takes about 620 seconds. Gtx 570 ran it for about 950 seconds.
But it is 240w tdp vs 120w tdp, so its about 3 times more efficient in work done per watt used in pps sieve.

The thing that is odd, is that the gtx 570 load in gpu-z is a constant 99%
but for the gtx 1060 the gpu-z load hovers between 60-90%.
Why is that? Is that normal?

Running on win7 pro 64bit\phenom II hexa\16gb ddr3\ nvidia driver 373.06.
Host: http://www.primegrid.com/results.php?hostid=506785

Now waiting for the AP27 to finish, that i was not able to run on my trusted gtx570.

I am curious to know how the 1060 performs, so thouse of you running on them, i'd appreciate any feedback, and any tips.

This was a good challenge, cudos to pg staff for keeping it all running so smooth, again...
I cannot believe i ended up 20-th. Cool...
Gongrats to all for their efforts, it was a good run.

What type of tasks need more attention? I'll keep my rig on it for a while.
Cheers everyone.

So last year i ran this challenge on 2 7970ghz editions, and i promised to ran on 4 gpus next year. Well i'm runnin on 4 now, pulling about 1kwt from the socket. It's a good stress test for my psu, which is enermax 1,35kwt platypus.
Well if my platypus aint gonna like it, then to hell with it, it has a valid warranty. And if it would not have a valid warranty, then... to hell with it. I will still run it, twist it, stress test it.

Good lyck to all. May the force protect you and guide you on your path (i dont mean gforce).
