1) Message boards : Aggie The Pew message board (Message 132023)
Posted 39 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
@RR: You already have the double bronze?!

If that's the project that may be brought back, yes. I loved that project.

CW sieve (it used to be called GCW sieve back when it was running, for some reason lost to me) is, indeed, being considered for restarting. Eventually we'll need to sieve it beyond n=25M.

We have not investigated the CW sieve software yet, and it hasn't been run in quite a few years. Even if it works correctly today, all we have is a CUDA app for GPUs. There's no OpenCL version, so that means CPU and Nvidia only. No AMD GPUs.

This is a back-burner type of thing. There's no schedule at the moment.

Separately, we have also been talking about running the PSP (really the ESP/PSP/SoB) sieve to sieve the n=50M to 100M range. 50M doesn't seem ridiculously far off anymore. When 321 sieve runs out of work, we'll probably bring PSP sieve back.

2) Message boards : AP26 - AP27 Search : Change to AP27 search parameters (Message 131994)
Posted 40 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
In the AP27 version of the search, we search 10 shifts at once, effectively creating 640 bit shifts, so the shifts are 0, 640, 1280, 1920, etc.

Right now, both shift 0 and shift 640 are at k = ~74M. We're freezing shift 640 where it is, and continuing with shift 0 until it reaches k = 143 M. At that point we will resume shift 640 and we will also start shift 1280.

From then on we will follow this pattern:

* All the shifts that have been started (initially, 0, 640, and 1280) will run in parallel until the most recently started shift (1280 initially) reaches k = 70M. Every shift will be approximately 70M k's ahead of the next shift.

* When the most recent shift gets to k = 70M, another shift (the next will be 1920) is started at k=0.

* The process then repeats.

* When a shift reaches k = 318M, it is shut down (the AP27 program will overflow otherwise).

* Shift 9600 is the last shift where k can go up to 318M. Shifts beyond 9600 have lower K limits.

Shift 0 has reached 143M, and we have resumed shift 640 and started shift 1280.

In case anyone's wondering, extrapolating how long it too to do 70M on shift 0 to all 11 shifts, if the processing rate stayed the same we'd have 41 years worth of work.
3) Message boards : Number crunching : More GPU tasks for a while (Message 131971)
Posted 41 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
The GPUGRID project is currently having problems with their software licenses. These problems prevent generating GPU workunits that will run properly for most of the platforms they support. Computers running Windows XP might still be able to run them, but not computers running Linux or the more recent versions of Windows.

Expect more activity on the GPU versions of applications until they fix this problem, which is expected to take weeks.

We'll welcome them with open arms. GPUGrid (ne PS3Grid) has a special place in my heart! I'm pretty sure it was the first BOINC GPU project in which I participated. Very possibly the first GPU project, period.
4) Message boards : Number crunching : LLR 3.8.23 Testing (AVX-512) (Message 131970)
Posted 41 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
But, I've told Boinc to get test work from about any project that might want to send some to me. I'm certain other people did this as well. Afair it is possible to send individual test work to individual users or machines.
Can't this feature be used in the future?

Else:
Might it be useful to setup a beta project just like Einstein, Rosetta and Seti did?

We do, in fact, have a beta project which we use sometimes for testing. It's called "CompositeGrid", and lives at dev.primegrid.com. It's only turned on when we're actually doing testing there.

As for the "enable beta" checkbox, in the past, that wasn't useful for our testing, but with the latest server upgrade it could be used for that purpose. I'll keep that in mind for the next time we do testing. Or someone will remind me if I forget.

Btw.:
Can you deduct the app_config.xml's settings from the work-unit's output?
If so, it should be possible to run test work accordingly.

We can't see what's in your app_config file.

And we're done!

Final statistics:

Challenge: Lennart Vogel Honorary
App: 20 (ESP-LLR)
(As of 2019-08-10 00:05:33 UTC)

38413 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 38385 (100%) / 0 (0%) / 28 (0%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

6695 (17%) were aborted. [6694 (17%) / 0 (0%) / 1 (0%)]
428 (1%) came back with some kind of an error. [428 (1%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
25500 (66%) have returned a successful result. [25473 (66%) / 0 (0%) / 27 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

4237 (17%) are pending validation. [4231 (17%) / 0 (0%) / 6 (0%)]
20958 (82%) have been successfully validated. [20937 (82%) / 0 (0%) / 21 (0%)]
195 (1%) were invalid. [195 (1%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
110 (0%) are inconclusive. [110 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

The current leading edge (i.e., latest work unit for which work has actually been sent out to a host) is n=13540746. The leading edge was at n=13016388 at the beginning of the challenge. Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 4.03% as much as it had prior to the challenge!

We didn't find a prime, but we did do over 14 times what we normally do. Incredible job everyone!
7) Message boards : Number crunching : Lennart Vogel Honorary Challenge (Message 131903)
Posted 42 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
With eight hours remaining in the challenge, it's time to remind everyone...

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

When the challenge completes, we would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's (and then UPDATE the PrimeGrid project) instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Likewise, if you're shutting down the computer for an extended period of time, or deleting the ViM (Virtual Machine), please ABORT all remaining tasks first.

Thank you!
