Posted 106 days ago by Tern
Book one is now back to it's regularly scheduled price of $2.99 on Kindle - but remains free through Kindle Unlimited. Paperback and Large Print paperbacks are available as well. I'd like to thank Mike for the kind words and for posting this here!
2) Message boards : Problems and Help : 321 Sieve app doesn't suspen anymore (Mac version) (Message 129709)

Just tested it on Mac as well, suspending did cause it to stop running.

I had 321 Sieve running on both a Windows and a Linux machine and just suspended them while watching a system monitor, and they all dropped to 0% within a few seconds... Version of BOINC? OS? Any recent app_info file use?

GPU work earns you credit much faster - but for finding large primes, you have a much better chance with the CPU LLR apps. SMALL primes can be found either way. (Or at least that's the rumor... I'm cursed...) You posted your hardware in another thread, I don't remember all of it, but I was thinking as I read, "Sieve... sieve... sieve..."

Any non-Intel, or older Intel, box will do fine on any of the CPU sieve apps. 321-SV right now is the best "credit per thread" IMHO. You can run one task on every thread on every slower box you have, and rack up credit pretty quick. You will NOT find a prime that way, though.

Any decent Intel CPU with AVX (the newer ones) I'd put on one of the LLR apps. I'm no LLR expert but something like ESP or 321 or TRP is where I'd start - the "middle run time" ones. If that works well, then step up to the big ones. I'd avoid SOB until you're comfortable with really long run times and have a really stable system to do it with.

GPU - with what you have, I'd do PPS-SV for faster credits, or the lower GFNs if you want a prime. I love GFN-22 and "Lucky" but I don't mind my fastest GPU running one task for 3-5 days...
7) Message boards : AP26 - AP27 Search : Macintosh AP27 GPU testers needed (Message 129377)

If anyone is running a Mac on PG with a GPU that can run AP27, there's a new version of the app currently needing to be tested on the development server. It's a minor change, but we realized nobody helping out on Dev right now has a Mac with a usable GPU...

Click on the "PrimeGrid Discord chat server" link on the left, or PM me, or reply here if you'd be willing to run a couple of tasks to verify that I didn't break something. :-0

Thanks!

Additional info - was able to try running AP27 from the command line in Terminal, got this error message:

"Error: boinc_get_opencl_ids() failed with error -112"

The fact that the drivers are "bundled with OSX" is exactly the problem. Somehow mine are not working with PG, and never have on this one Mac. Because of some software that is "stuck" with OSX 10.11, I can't just upgrade the OS. I've tried everything short of a total backup/format/new OS install/recover data to fix this. If the drivers could be reinstalled SEPARATELY, that would be the first thing I'd try, but I can't locate them anywhere online. Obviously if there was a place, they'd have to have a set for every variation of Mac OSX, and nobody wants to go to that much trouble for the .00001% case like mine.

AP27 and GFN are the only apps (from PG) that crash it, PPS-SV works fine. Collatz crashes. SETI/Einstein/Milky Way/Enigma, all fine. I'm following up on some debug tracing advice shortly, should get better error diagnostics to work with. Only utility I can find is "OpenGL Extensions Viewer" which reports everything is working fine, really does have 3GB, runs all benchmarks. No clue yet.

Sorry, should have specified. The 280X GPU has 3GB of VRAM, so it's not memory. Definitely a driver or OpenGL lib problem.
