1) Message boards : News : Fix for screen lag when running GPU (Message 72281)
Posted 2650 days ago by Profile trigggl
The solution seems OK, but I think BOINC should have an option to choose to disable the GPU when the system needs it, the same way it does with CPU, because BOINC is intended for calculating when the computer is idle, not to compute whatever the user is doing...

There's already an option to stop crunching on the GPU when the computer is in use, but that's not exactly the same thing.

As for changes to the BOINC client, that's something you would need to take up with the BOINC developers. I'm not sure what you're asking for is feasible.

...and as we all know, "suspending" a task in BOINC doesn't always stop it from running.

Ironic that "hardware acceleration" creates lag. Thanks for this info.

Sorry for being impatient, but are the stats going to be shown for the non-challenge?

have a look at the front page below the counter: there are the links to user and team stats (both are filled since 18:30)

Ok. Thanks. It seemed to take longer than usual to show up.

Our obsessive compulsive behavior to limerickize* everything is just a tad disconcerting.
* (dawg word - won't be appearing in Oxford's anytime soon)[/size]

too bad that's not a real word... i was just fixing to use it on my words for friends :)

Next someone's going to tell me that Hawg is not a word. I can even use it in a sentence.

How 'bout dem Hawgs?

On the positive side, I should be able to get a cheap nvidia card when everyone switches back to ATI apps.

The (not so) funny thing is: I built the ppsieve/tpsieve apps with the SDK 3.1/3.2 in the last days and I ended up with the same error that initially appeared when running tpsieve with the 260 drivers. I my case the error occurred with the 256.53 drivers and the CUDA 3.1 SDK but the app worked without flaws with the 260 drivers and the CUDA 3.2 SDK. Things really interact in weird ways...

So, is it possible that if I upgrade CUDA to the latest, I'll be able to use the 260 driver without immediate comp errors? 256 doesn't play well with xorg-server 1.9 on my computer. I'd like to use my video card for video as well as crunching.

I may just be an inexperienced idiot trying to do this, but this is what I get:

mmillerick@mmillerick-laptop:~$ sh '/home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux' -p2563602e7 -P2563604e7 -n 10000000 -N 25000000 /home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux: 3: @@w@8: not found /home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux: 3: @: not found /home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux: 3: cannot create Ni׵*Ci%/SfGzK+tvqըe!âAGBp B= ̍qLΐbZ6FP{Md: Directory nonexistent /home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux: 3: ELF: not found /home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux: 3: ,cI92: not found /home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux: 4: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")

What's with the "sh"? Try
/home/mmillerick/Desktop/cwpsieve-cuda-boinc-x86_64-linux -p2563602e7 -P2563604e7 -n 10000000 -N 25000000

Could we actually get this sent to someone that completes work?
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=133113721

Why are there so many lame crunchers downloading tasks they won't or can't finish? It seems like the big ones always get sent to the lame ones.

Judging by history, I'm not real confidant with the current wing man.

So, basically, we linux users need to downgrade to nvidia driver 256.xx?

So far, at 5 hours on a HT P4 3.0 GHz (32bit), I have a task that is at 14%. Is that a normal run time? Will it net me 1800 credits?

I might be able to get 2 of these out for the challenge. It will be close. I may have to turn HT off to get one out.

My P4 did one in 30 hours and did receive 1800 credits. That is really good for a P4 and I could have done two at once.
