PrimeGrid will be running a 10-day challenge on the GFN-18, GFN-19, and GFN-20 subprojects from 21 December 13:22 UTC to 31 December 13:22 UTC.
Next challenge - GFN 18, 19 and 20
I will be in but on a limited basis. Trying to get some down systems up and running but work is not letting me do much.
Go AtP ! | |
|
|
Gents,
Best of luck to all of those participating!
I will be busy with WW since I am relatively behind as a result of the relatively poorer response of the GTX 10xx series cards and which I hope to partially make up during the challenge period (ditto for next February and TdP). I have yet to get my GTX 1080 involved due to the corona virus lockdown and my inability to acquire a new PSU for a system sitting on the side.

That is something I thought about as well. It will increase by throughput by 50% (GTX 1080 vs 1060).

How can it be ?
Home farm, in the UK BOINC Team, did 3 tasks almost immediately ?

I saw that... and I can't see his systems so no idea what he is running.

Put everything on the GFN-20s - see that that pays off.. will have to watch it close to the end if I can remember too.

Me too.
Moved my only GPU from WW to GFN20.
BTW, I DC'ed the last WW near find that tng got. :)

GFN 18 runs in 450s on my stock 3080.
As mentioned above, GFN20 is the better bet as they give 10% more credit, you just need to remember to shift down to 19 then 18 as time runs out.

Before I throw this out to the masses, hopefully someone here can explain.
I have 2 2080s in 1 pc.
device 0 = 46 computeUnits @ 1830MHz
device 1 = 46 computeUnits @ 1710MHz
but what I cannot work out is why device 0 GFN run times are 10% slower than device 1.
Surely it should be the other way around?
I've double checked which is which by pausing my tasks and confirming the higher clocked card in afterburner is device 0.

Many possibilities...
1) Clocks are lower than stated due to heat
2) Device 0 slot is throttling PCIe speeds for some reason (e.g., sharing the lane with another device like a storage device)
3) device 0 is running the monitor(s)

The cards are water cooled and running at 45C so we can rule that one out :-)
In theory when you plug in a 2nd card it's meant to run at PCIe4: x16x4 - ie the main slot doesn't change speed. I've still got some old pending tasks and when device0 was there by itself it was returning WUs faster than device1 is now.
I've just changed the bios from "auto" to the "x8x4" option (strangely there is no x16x4 option) and it doesn't seem to have changed anything.
Just one more thing to hate about this crappy asrock board.

I'd suggest using GPU-Z to look at the stats on both in real time at the same time, and see what differences there are. Should be easy to see the currently running clock, and maybe also have a look at bus loading and other stuff too.

Thanks, just did that and it reports it's running pci3 x4.
Time to get a decent board - I knew should have sent this one back the second I saw they'd made it 1cm shorter than standard atx. Anyone want to buy a crappy asrock motherboard?

Ok, temporarily added GFN18, will decide what to do later:
2070: around 900s
1080Ti at 60% PL: >1600s
2080Ti at 60% PL: around 630s
Why run 60% power limit? The 1080Ti is too noisy if I run it flat out. The 2080Ti I got used and the previous owner did some interesting things to the cooling. While core temps are ok, and I had a go at re-doing the other thermal pads, I'd consider myself in the testing phase still.
Also, it is the middle of winter and I'm rather warm.

Okay...was thinking 20's ranking or 20's as in RTX 20xx cards. :)
I did move over some slower cards to GFN20 after getting one or two 18s to see the timings.
Some should be coming in soon, so maybe I can get back into the top 5.

Looks like the 16/4 pci config is actually standard on a lot of x570 boards which is worrying for something that's supposed to be the "performance" option.
I've ordered an MSI that shifts to 8/8 as one would expect to replace it and the asrock can go onto ebay for some other sucker lucky person to deal with.

I just discovered that a system had stopped it's internet connection for 3 hours.
Missed out on about 60,000 credit.
This has happened once before relatively recently.
The system now has a 0.4 day buffer.
I like to consider this at chances of being a DC for GFN20s that I wouldn't have otherwise had.
At the very start of the challenge my TV remote failed.
And I mean on the press of the button to take me to the 2nd system to start running.
The remote had failed once before about a year ago.
I took it to the repair shop and it was working again.
I bought a 2nd remote which was sitting ready to go.
I hadn't put it away where I wouldn't be able to find it quickly.
Laziness pays off! | |

I haven't updated stats yet beacause now I have to do it manually (yeah, call me lazy :) )
That is until I find a way to fix wrong character encoding in https://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2020_9/top_users.html (Rdiger is giving me a hard time).

msi installed and the fast card is now 10% faster than before.
A good reminder to always check the specs closely.
If your motherboard says it does pcie4 4x you might think that's the same bandwidth as pcie3 8x BUT if only 4x of your 16x connector is wired and your card is pcie3 then all you're going to get is pcie3 4x.

The 2 people immediately behind me have stopped progressing in the challenge statistics for about 10 hours now. Gelly powered past me in the last day and then just stopped. I am going to be very unimpressed if bunkering is going on.

I think Gelly has been utilizing TSN instances. Would be pretty tough to bunker those. May have just moved on to other projects already?

Well done ratties!! That was a fun challenge.
Thinking I will leave a few on the gfn20s and move back to ww with the rest.
I wish a very prosperous, safe and happy new year for everyone!
Cheers and Happy New Year

I slightly miscalculated my last gfn20 task so had to fling the windows open. Just scraped in with the extra boost the gpu got from running at 30C instead of 50C.
