I've moved my computers onto 321 sieve - the 9900K was already on it and has been for a while.

I am so annoyed with Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility. It's a bucket of crap.
You can't dial in negative AVX or AVX512 offset.
For the 9980XE, that has default CPU ratio multiplier of 32 X (3200MHz) when running 18 cores - I can only lower that to 30 X.

When I started running hyper-threading on the old 9960X, temp of CPU went up into the mid 80s degrees C. So I thought, why not install Intel's software for an Intel CPU?

I installed the software and re-booted. When I opened the software advanced mode and clicked on yes I understand that I can damage the CPU - I discovered the settings that it decided to create when re-booting:

Turbo boost short power max - 550 W (should be 195)
Turbo boost power time - 16 sec (should be 1 sec)
Turbo boost power max - 550 W (should be 165)
Processor current limit - 1023 Amps (should be 135)
AVX offset +1
AVX512 offset +1

The only good thing is that it didn't mess with the CPU or cache voltages.

I have adjusted the settings to what they should be (at least what a 9980XE should be) and lowered the CPU ratio from 40 X to 38 X.

What is interesting is the differences between the 9980XE and 9960X.
9960X:
CPU max core frequency: 3.5 GHz
CPU temp: 72 degrees C
Current/EPP limit throttling: YES
Package TDP: 156W

9980XE:
CPU max core frequency: 3 GHz
CPU temp: 76 degrees C
No throttling
Package TDP: 137W

Weird as it sounds I think it was working by design.

Here's the amd equivalent

On the Gigabyte X570 Master with the 3900X,
PBO limits were as follows: PPT 1200W, TDC 540A, and EDC 600A.

On the MSI Godlike, the limits were: 1000W, 490A, and 630A.

With PBO disabled the limits were PPT 142W, TDC 95A, and EDC 140A

ie it's deliberately set to crazy limits then the chip decides what it can handle. All this appears to do is generate loads of extra temperature with little or no extra performance.

I find it strange giving a warning before going into the advanced section of the software: You may damage the CPU.

I think the warning should be a thankyou note: By entering the advanced section you will be viewing how ridiculous the settings can be and basically anything you could do couldn't possibly make it worse - maybe lower the settings a bit and we'll have a crack at only double digit temperature settings? Cheers from the CPU.

Agreed, with amd you also have to go into the overclocking "you're going to kill your cpu" settings to switch off PBO.
I thought I'd really screwed up when I changed my htpc over from intel to amd. The new chip claimed to be 35W just like the outgoing one but I found the temperatures on my fanless case went from mid 30s with the intel to mid 50s with the amd. It tooks several months of head scratching and searching before a post suddenly appeared saying "switch off pbo" and that was it, temps dropped to mid 30s.
Same on the 3700x, for PG tasks it was mid 80s and dropped into the 60s with PBO switched off and clocks actually improved as the chips will boost higher when cooler. I got another 10C drop by switching from the noctua nh-14 to an Arctic 280mm AIO despite all the claims that watercooling isn't worthwhile any more. It's also able to achieve those temperatures without having to run 100% fan so is much quieter.

Intel XTU isn't perfect for sure, I think in part it is limited by what the mobo bios allows it to do, so there are unintuitive conflicts going on at time. I find it ok if you only want to change one variable at a time, and fix the other settings in bios before doing so.

The AVX offset I think is working. What you see as a +1 offset isn't. The value is absolute and a reduction amount. There's similar in the telecoms industry, where loudness ratings are a positive number, but a bigger number is quieter. Turned out they defined it this way before amplification was invented, so you only ever had losses.

The high values for limits are also no unusual, especially in "enthusiast" systems. Note on Intel systems, adjusting the power limit and related values are NOT considered overclocking. This is "in spec" according to Intel. For more information, read: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14582/talking-tdp-turbo-and-overclocking-an-interview-with-intel-fellow-guy-therien
Just because you increased those limits, doesn't mean it'll ever go near those values. There are many limits built into CPUs, and it will stop going faster when it hits any one.

Overclocking does include directly adjusting the clocks or voltage.

AMD is different. They do enforce a PPT value at stock. For example, a 65W TDP AMD CPU actually runs at 88W PPT limit. Neither Intel nor AMD currently require the CPU to be limited to operating at TDP. In AMD's case, increasing the PPT value IS considered overclocking.

Both sides are pushing CPUs more and more towards the limit of performance as they try to out-do each other. As such they often work in an inefficient area of their operating states. Actually implementing a lower power limit is a good way to keep that in check. You generally lose less clock and you do (CPU) power consumption, although total system power still needs to be considered. An example on my Ryzen 3600, that runs around 3.9 GHz on LLR work at stock 88W PPT limit, give or take, and on reducing it to 65W (to equal its TDP) it only drops around 200 MHz or so. Roughly 27% reduction in CPU power results in around 5% performance drop. Exact values may vary depending on system.

Intel XTU is poorly implemented. That was polite!

I think why it is stuck in my head that AVX512 offset is adding to the amount is because of the settings (AVX512 offset 3) I found when the 9980XE went mental after setting OC to manual in the bios. However that may have been due to the max core ratio being 45X instead of 38X. And that I have more than one bios that has AVX512 offset using minus to reduce.

I needed to better control heat while recently doing 321 sieve, so I installed XTU.
Now that I have gone back to SOB, it seems to be slower, so instead of messing about with settings, I thought it best to uninstall XTU. Advice was to load defaults before uninstalling.
I thought - you are not going to like this. Defaults were 'silly'. I looked in the BIOS to see if I could take charge of normal defaults from there - nothing.

I re-started windows, suspended BOINC, loaded XTU defaults and uninstalled XTU. I re-started BOINC and the temp climbed to north of 80 degrees C - definitely not normal settings. Computer switched off. At least it is more sensible than the 9980XE that became a mob of lemmings with a cliff in front of it. The 9980XE hit 115 degrees C.

I again looked in the BIOS to see what settings I could change. There was nothing I could change. Loading BIOS defaults did nothing.

Windows re-started and I quickly suspended BOINC. I got temp settings in front of me and gingerly started BOINC again. It seems OK. And after running for a while temps are back to what they were before installing XTU - I am guessing that it's back to it's better speed.

There are settings that just change by themselves - which I suppose is good?

The difficulty I had with the 9980XE was that when I created an OC from the bios, which the computer hated, I was unable to put settings back to what they were. That is when I tried manual. Actually I am lucky I had XTU already installed.

I have had this experience with overclocking a GPU too - you make changes that you can't undo. I uninstalled the software which thankfully put those settings back.

Last time I was doing SOB, occasionally the 9980XE would return a result taking about 1.5 times as long. I was doing 14 thread SOB tasks with 4 cores free for the GPU.
This time I am doing 16 thread SOB tasks with 2 cores free for GPU - it has been running well but the last task was much longer.
As far as I know, 2 cores run faster - and I am guessing I get a longer time when none of the faster cores are assigned to the CPU task?
I am now trying 17 thread SOB tasks with 1 core for GFN19.
If I don't get anymore longer times, it still doesn't confirm that that theory is correct.

Have you tried the prime95 benchmark to see what your fastest configuration of tasks/threads is?

Re free cores, for GFN I don't bother leaving any free as they use so little cpu time it doesn't seem to make any real difference either to the GPU or CPU tasks.

I think it may be in particular for the 9900K - but the difference between running 7 SGS single thread tasks and 6 SGS single thread tasks is about 2 minutes for GFN19
7 SGS tasks - GFN19 ~ 1300 sec
6 SGS tasks - GFN19 ~ 1180 sec

I think he means that the GFN19 unit runs slower by 120 seconds when running 7 instead of 6 SGS units.

My strike rate of firsts for GFN19 is 27-28%
It is always one owner who is beating me on multiple slower computers.
My cards are faster by a long way.

I've looked into it further - most tasks I have no chance of getting first - there is about an hour difference between the first 2 tasks being sent out.
The others are mostly being f***ed up by one person aborting multiple tasks.

well, if they're not primes it doesn't really matter and hopefully the percentages will sort themselves out in time for your big discovery.

The advertisement now looks really dated - however the saying 'Not happy Jan' is still used in Australia, with it's origin in that advertisement. It's a pity that yellow pages are now obsolete.

I think everyone should be allowed one whinge a year about low first rate. The first rates are now climbing out of whatever hole they fell into.

I've set my 3rd card running GFN19. I thought it was overheating, but touch wood, it is looking OK. In fact the strange fan sounds seemed to have stopped too. Maybe the OC episode scared it back to normal?

Posting about a computer now running well is a sure way to make it explode. :)

Have you tried the prime95 benchmark to see what your fastest configuration of tasks/threads is?

For the benefit of the less adept, how exactly would I use prime95 to figure out my optimal task/thread ratio?

I thought prime95 was a GIMPS thing. Wouldn't my ratio vary based on PG prime type, i.e. SOB vs SR5 (which are the two I'm most interested in running multi-core).

deep breath... (this is for windows, linux is done on a command line)

Download this: latest prime95

Extract the zip somewhere. Go into that folder and run prime95.exe.
Select "just stress testing" then click cancel on the next dialog.

Go to "options, benchmark"
Type = throughput.
Put in the FFT size for your project:
eg for SoB you can use either 2880 or 3200
for number of workers I started with the even combinations so for 16 processors I started with:
1,2,4,8,16 (after a while it will become obvious you don't need to test all of them)
Then click ok and wait...
You'll get an output like this :

[Sep 29 21:03] Timing 2880K FFT, 16 cores, 1 worker. Average times: 1.28 ms. Total throughput: 783.54 iter/sec.
[Sep 29 21:03] Timing 2880K FFT, 16 cores, 2 workers. Average times: 1.80, 1.77 ms. Total throughput: 1121.07 iter/sec.
[Sep 29 21:04] Timing 2880K FFT, 16 cores, 4 workers. Average times: 6.85, 6.89, 6.43, 6.99 ms. Total throughput: 589.57 iter/sec.

Which tells me for SoB I should run 2 workers (or tasks) of 8 threads each.

However, if I want to run CUL instead:

[Sep 29 21:05] Timing 1920K FFT, 16 cores, 1 worker. Average times: 0.98 ms. Total throughput: 1015.33 iter/sec.
[Sep 29 21:05] Timing 1920K FFT, 16 cores, 2 workers. Average times: 1.14, 1.16 ms. Total throughput: 1735.70 iter/sec.
[Sep 29 21:05] Timing 1920K FFT, 16 cores, 4 workers. Average times: 2.18, 2.17, 2.11, 2.04 ms. Total throughput: 1882.88 iter/sec.

then 4 tasks of 4 threads each will give the highest throughput.

I've moved onto PSP and knowing what the FFT size(s) are - just larger than WOO / CUL - that I wouldn't be able to run 2 x PSP tasks in cache on the 9960Xs. And I may be able to on the 9980XE.

It is confirmed, including that I can run 2 x 8 thread PSP tasks on the 9980XE allowing 2 cores for GFN19.

old 9960X - 15 thread tasks - average 17,630 sec

new 9960X - 2 x 8 thread tasks - average 36,240 sec
- 16 thread tasks - average 15,880 sec

9980XE - 2 x 8 thread tasks - average 33,470 sec
- 17 thread task - 21,770 sec

I remember that TRP ran well on all three 99xxX computers - so with multi-threaded tasks I can expect just over 600,000 per day on TRP with all 4 computers.

As I am not running the 9900K on PSP, I am crudely going to adjust by 6/7
(600,000 x 6/7) and allowing for different bonus credits on projects (TRP 20%, PSP 45%), the three 99xxX computers are in total underperforming by 20% - with most/all of that underperformance by the 9960Xs - as they are meant to be faster than the 9980XE by about 15%.

I did try running PSP on the 9900K. 49,000 sec. Yep, that is a waste of time.

I also discovered what happens when you change from 2 x 8 thread tasks to 1 x 17 thread task (9980XE).
First, the 17 thread task is downloaded as soon as you change the setting in computing preferences from 16 processors to 17 processors - I expected this. (very soon after BOINC manager knows about the change)
But the strange thing was that it would only run 1 x 8 thread task, leaving the other 8 thread task (and the 17 thread task) waiting to run. I was unable to persuade it to do anything different.
Exactly the same thing happened on a 9960X changing from 2 x 8 thread tasks to 1 x 16 thread task. I remember that it was exactly the same. At least it would only run one 8 thread task at a time. I can't see how it downloaded the 16 thread task while 2 x 8 thread tasks were running, but I remember that it was exactly the same as the 9980XE.

Edit: There may be a mixture of LLR and LLR2 which I am ignoring

Boinc gets very confused when you try changing the number of threads so I let it finish whatever it's running before making the change.

Got it! So I need to know the FFT size for the project I'm interested in, which I can find by looking at the Stderr output. For instance, SR5:

Starting probable prime test of 170386*5^3196127-1
Using FMA3 FFT length 768K, Pass1=384, Pass2=2K, clm=2, 6 threads, a = 3, L2 = 246*203, M = 49938
Compressed 64 points to 6 products. Time : 54.029 sec.
Testing complete.

Thanks!

That's it. Just be aware that some (most?) projects have a range of FFTs which may cross boundaries. eg GCW goes from 1536->2000+ the top end of which is slightly faster with 8 threads rather than 4 on ryzen.
from memory, SR5 goes from 600->800

The 2080Ti on this computer started running a bit hotter so I installed MSI afterburner.
The fan was running at 60% and I bumped it up to 80% and the temp is now more appropriate.
The install is hilarious though - the user interface is tiny. I am using a 4K TV and I understand windows uses a magnification to make it all work. That magnification isn't being applied to afterburner. I needed to use Windows Magnifier at 300% to see what I was doing.

In Your Account, there is information about tasks returned in the last 24 hours.
I know the table is really neat and adding something to it may mess it up.
Does anyone else think it may be useful to have information of credit in the last 24 hours?
So 2 new pieces of information for each host / subproject:
- credit including what hasn't been double checked
- credit that has been achieved.
As far as I know, I understand some (or all) of the information as it stands now is only about primary tasks - not including DCs. Probably the new information should be inclusive of DCs?

Kind of.
I was thinking it would be useful as an another way to easily monitor output for each project on each computer. What got me thinking this is that my times have increased for DIV and I don't know if that is in proportion to how much extra credit I may get for the larger FFT sizes. It's only a pipe dream.

Message 144974 - Posted: 4 Nov 2020 | 9:03:20 UTC

My computers are getting bogged down with GCW.
The total performance is down by about 35%.

I am comparing to performance with the challenges on TRP and PPSE where I had 600,000 credit / day. I have adjusted for bonus credit and cores used to get that estimate of drop in performance from TRP. TRP was using LLR, and now CGW is using LLR2. And GCW now has a lot of extra use of ram/hdd which may be causing most of the drop in performance? Instead of it taking around 15 days to get 9 million credit to reach sapphire, it is going to take more like 25 days.

I tried running 2 x CUL (LLR2) on one system and it was much better, but probably a 10% drop in performance from LLR. I am going by memory of how WOO (LLR) ran and comparing it with recent CUL (LLR2).

Does anyone know if AVX512 has become less useful for LLR2 compared to LLR?

On ryzen at times it's taking twice as long as before but the credit granted assumes it's working perfectly :-(

There's a bug in LLR2 which Pavel has acknowledged but they're not giving any estimates on when it's going to be fixed (despite me asking twice now, maybe go into the llr2 thread and have a moan).

I noticed just now my gcw tasks were taking even longer than their even longer llr2 times.
This puzzled me somewhat and then I remembered the other day that my pc had a random reboot. I'd been messing around with the watercooling shortly before and doing a few reboots of my own so I didn't really give it a second thought especially as it's given the appearance of working normally since.
Figuring I should now take a closer look I discovered that my bios has been reset to defaults and therefore my memory memory was running non-xmp 2.4GHz rather xmp than 3.6GHz.
Can't say I've ever seen that happen before without any sort of warning or taking you into the bios settings rather than starting the o/s.

on stock settings it's 10% faster on WOO. With PBO it will run 25% faster but 70% hotter. (3.5GHz-> 4.4GHz, 50C->85C).
There's some new settings for automatically adjusting voltage curves and temperature throttling that will need checking out to find a sensible boost that won't melt the chip.

A small tweak and we're now 20% faster than the previous generation while still under 60C. Impressive.

20% faster under what comparison conditions?

I'm curious if Zen 3 increased IPC in LLR use cases where cache/mem is not the limit, and if so, how much? e.g. small FFT use cases run 1 per core.

3950x 2M WOO = 27k seconds
5950x 2M WOO = 21k seconds

still more speed to come.

edit: will try SoB after the challenge to see how we go outside the cache.

If I'm looking at those computers correctly, that's running 2 tasks of 8 cores each, plus something on GPU? I'd hope the unified L3 would help in itself, but I'm still curious about any generational differences to the core itself. Could I request you run some SGS no more than one per core at some point? If possible, observe the running clock at the time.

Sure, need to get all my badges to jade now so everything will be getting a run.

just ran a quick test in p95 for 16 worker, 128K fft:

3950x, pbo off, boost during test ~4Ghz: 40368 iter/sec
* when tested previously "pbo on" resulted in loads of extra temperature but very little performance gain. I can't recheck the exact numbers right now as it's all set in bios.

5950x, pbo off, boost during test ~ 3.9GHz, 55C: 43203 iter/sec
5950x, pbo on, boost during test ~ 4.4Ghz, 85C: 52482.37 iter/sec.
(no I don't know why ~10% more boost = ~20% more performance).

Performance should end up somewhere in the middle of the two once I tweak the voltage offsets and limits for pbo to give a reasonable 24x7 temperature.

First results are in:

SoB: (2 x 8 threads)
3950x 2880k = 66000s
3200k = 74000s
5950x 2880k = 52000s
3200k = 58000s

I didn't get a chance to do any tweaking over the weekend so 5950x still has more to come.
I'll be doing 321 next and then move down the list.

Thanks, interesting results. So maybe we're looking up to 20% boost per-clock between Zen 2 and Zen 3, although I'd be more comfortable without that boost vs throughput difference. Could something else had been unknowingly running during that test which skewed the results? When doing such testing I usually run it a few times and make sure the values are in the same ball park as a check.

I've just run it a few more times. I think I must have forgotten to check the complex FFT box for the PBO run.
Today it's decided it's only going to boost to 3.7GHz standard with an average 41500iter/sec.
PBO is still 4.4GHz and an average 49000iter/sec.

Sadly I think the intial bios is somewhat borked as none of the advanced PBO settings work. Probably also explains why it's not boosting as high as it should/could in stock settings.

I've just done a bit of manual tweaking of the PBO settings.
The 128K benchmark is boosting to 4.1GHz @ 68C giving 47000iter/s.

Running SGS now.

Rough averages are:
5950: 435s
3950: 505s.

Once I adjust for clock speed (4020 vs 3760) the 3950 time comes down to around 470s.
Which gives us roughly a 10% ipc improvement.

According to prime95 running SR5 (768K-860K) as 8 tasks * 2 threads is about 5% faster than 4 tasks of 4 threads.

My first batch of 8x2 just finished and they're all over 15K seconds. My 4x4 tasks are all under 7K seconds.

I guess the lesson is don't trust prime95 when the results are close.

I kinda suspected a discrepancy at times between P95 and LLR but never put my finger on why. My guess is that when something is close to a limit, another factor that is not considered may take place. One difference is that Prime95 is a single program running multiple loads inside it. LLR with more than one instance are separate. There is some non-FFT related data that I guess might be duplicated with multiple LLR instances, which would not be in P95. Thus the efficiency of running more multiple units could be worse than expected.

Out of interest, what's the typical FFT size right now?

I think 768K is the most common but I'm seeing 600-896K.

Especially on the upper end of that range, you're getting close to the cache capacity when running 8 tasks so that could be a factor. When I did testing in the past, it wasn't all of nothing at the limit of cache, and there is a falloff starting a bit below, and not totally dropped a little over. So you could be on that slope, made bigger from LLR vs P95 running differences.

Good point. I didn't check the mix of tasks while it was running.
I've now settled on running bigger FFT tasks on the 5950 and smaller fft tasks on the 3950. That way as much as possible is kept in cache.
My last SoB task went under 50K seconds :-) That means I can run 3.5/day. I think when I first ran them (and my memory is somewhat hazy) I was able to do that many per week.

I just looked at Top Hosts - there are some very serious anonymous systems in the top 10.
9 systems each with 10 x RTX6000, 8 of the systems have 96 processors (most likely 48 cores across 2 CPUs) and 1 has 32.
These are undoubtedly used by Syracuse University and they are on a PPS sieve mission.
They want top spot and at this rate they are going to get it in about 5 month's time.

I always wonder seeing setups like this if they've mentioned to management just how much of the company infrastructure is being used for non-business purposes.

It's a huge amount of equipment. Huge in the context of what someone could have personally.

I looked up fastest GPUs and the RTX6000 isn't on the list for PPS sieve or AP27.
I am guessing that the requirement for the list is 10 x systems with a RTX6000 rather than 10 x RTX6000.

It just occurred to me that it may be possible to trick the stats into thinking there are 10 of something when it could be just 1 by adding the same computer 10 times to get 10 unique IDs. Of course you would then be only using 1 of the identities. For GPUs, you would probably need to do some work in each of the identities and for each of the projects you want stats.

If a 9960X appears in the fastest CPU stats - it would probably be obvious that I managed to 'trick the system'. I think I am not nearly so bored to try that. And it may cause annoyance, though I can't see how it would.
