The Tour de Primes for 2020 is just around the corner. Hoping to get a badge and if I'm very lucky a mega as well. I know I'm going to start on Gfn 16's but still trying to decide on small pps or pps mega.

PPSE for me just to get the first prime and the P2020 badge itself. Thereafter, I will probably park on MEGA for hopefully additional badges (Mega and TdP Mega). |
|
|
|
As I do every year, I will put all on PPSE :)
When I got prime and badge: I am over for this year :)

First time I'll be around for a TdP, so I'm hoping for at least a Prime badge, and a mega (aren't we all?) i don't have the hardware to compete for most of the jersies sadly.

Anyone know if there would be an issue with pg seeing a 2080 and a 980? Windows sees them both, they will both connect to a monitor but it's not showing up on the pc in pg. The 2080 is. |

I'd try reinstalling the driver. BOINC will show it as two GPUs of one type. Whichever one is device 0 (i.e., in the main GPU slot will be double counted when a second GPU is installed). Right now, it is not showing it as even installed as far as BOINC is concerned. I have found in the past that it is sometimes needed to install the driver twice to get everything to show up properly (most likely because Windows installs a generic driver for the second GPU in some manner). A single update to the latest driver usually works to fix this.
Also, keep in mind that to get BOINC to use both GPUs when they are very different (i.e., they are of very different computational speed), you may need to add some code to a cc-config file. Otherwise, BOINC only uses the better GPU of the two. That cc_config code should look like this:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
</log_flags>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
<cc_config>
|
|
|
|
Thanks Scott. Will give the driver a shot first. I let it install the driver from the update function in the adapter and did not download from nvidia.
Cheers
Edit: one cc_config.xml and driver update later it at least knows I have 2 cards but thinks they are both 2080s (which is what you said) but that's fine. Thanks again Scott. |

I will be running SGS in the start of February so I reach all turquoise LLR.
After that, I may only do 3 million of PPSE so not to reach jade.
It would be nice to have all the same colour LLR badges for more than a week or 2.
I will be running GFN-16 on my GPUs.
After February, when not doing challenges, I will probably be only running PPS sieve and making a big push to a billion total credit - which I'll be able to do in approx 37 days. |

Most of my current RAC is PPS Sv and PSA (MSR.) But I'm pretty hopeful, and have my "strategy" planned out :)

I just noticed this morning I was a dc on a mega.. dang it ! When I saw that the counter had gone up I wasn't thinking a mega.
I check two or three times per day: https://www.primegrid.com/primes/primes.php?project=ALL&factors=+&only=ALL&announcements=ALL&sortby=date&dc=yes&search=.
Guess I've never visited this page. Thanks for the link and now it's bookmarked. Takes a while to load.
Mine loads very fast (cache or no cache).
It will be interesting to see which strategy is best for PPS Mega: four cores per unit (ie you) or two cores per unit but twice the number of units (ie me).
I also checked into some of the more dominant players like DeleteNull, 288larsson and Scalise .... mixed bag of strategies (Scalise is at one unit per core). |

I'm setting my systems up so that it will run only one per system and hopefully NOT get a 2nd way before it's ready to run. This I hope cuts down on the time it actually gets sent to finished. However to each his own as I think one of the bigger factors is pure luck.
I do know that the gfn16's are going to explode once I move everything to them. I have some running now as well as some ppse's. I'm not going for credit I'm going for primes :) |

Yes, the two-minute delay in the start time due to the download is indeed a problem. I have had examples where that two minutes did me in.

IIRC, you used to be able to stop this "pre-fetching" behavior by setting the "Resource Share" in your PG Preferences to anything other than "0."
But that doesn't seem to have any effect anymore.
I just tried constraining it by setting the "Max # of simultaneous PrimeGrid tasks" preference to "3" (1 task for each of my 2 GPUs, plus a 3rd task for the CPU). That seems to do the trick now.

Yep that's what I've been working with. One reason I've also set the # of cpus to use equal to the number of physical cores for multi tasking so it only gets on cpu job at a time. I've also gone and set the max number of cpus available to 50% on the individual pc. This of course is a pain when we were running the 321 sieves but I never could seem to get the computer preference page in PG to work like it was intended or (and much more likely) I didnt understand what I was doing. |

That's awesome!
It seems to be working on my PCs. |

For "finding primes" you can do a few things:
1. Set your work buffer to zero. If you download hundreds of tasks ... the tasks will start when the wingman has already finished his work and you will always be the second to none.
2. Use multi threading if possible. 2 cores => 2 threads, 4 cores => 4 threads, 6 cores: fiddle out what is better 2*3 or 1*6, for 8 cores it is (mostly) better to use 2*4, only the big ones (SOB) may work better with 1*8 threads.
3. Don't span WU threading over more than one socket (server boards), or one CCX (AMD-Ryzen), e.g. a Ryzen-3700x (8 cores, 2 CCX) runs better with 2*4.
4. DeleteNull rule: Avoid BOINC software mismatches. If there is only one WU (4 threads) running on a 6700k the cc_config.xml has a setup with: <ncpus>1</ncpus>.
Otherwise BOINC downloads much WU you don't want (s. 1.)

So I hijacked the badges thread but have now moved the great posts and info concerning TdP here. I am to blame for hijacking the thread. It's just what we do :) |

Be *really* careful with that -- it can backfire on you. It will work, yes, right up until it doesn't. Then it will turn not working into an art form.
If BOINC does the thing where there's no work and it downloads too many CPU jobs -- 3 in your case -- it won't be able to download any GPU tasks and the GPUs will sit there idle until the CPU tasks complete. Definitely not what you want.

I think that is backwards, it should be set to zero to not pre-load tasks. That tells BOINC it is a "backup" project and should only be done if no other work is available. I haven't looked closely recently, but I think that still works. |

I think you are right--I couldn't remember which way that it was.
A "0" entered becomes a "--" in the preference setting. All of my locations have been set to "--", but the pre-fetching behavior still happens.
Michael, that's good to think about with regard to BOINC gathering a bunch of WUs (six, in my case) for my multi-threading hex-core CPU. That would definitely gum up the works. Maybe I'll just let the pre-fetching ride on that rig.

I wonder if something else might be required, like as a 0 is a backup project, that implies another "normal" project should exist even if not enabled.
Still, I'll try to check and see how the behaviour is when I'm home later. I believe it still works.
One thing to catch me out in the past is that local overrides will take over from web settings, so maybe check that if applicable. |

Sure seems that way - in 4 days of searching I've found 6 * SGS primes - 4 * 1st and 2 * DC. I have 36 cores on the job. |

Michael was right and there is indeed an issue with systems which have both a CPU and a GPU.
I tried changing the prefs for my i7 6700k to "4" but that excluded the GPU once its units were done. I now have it back to two threads (for the LLR portion) so as to also have no issues with the GPU.
Hopefully I will have very few units in common with DeleteNull who is running his i7 6700k (without a GPU) at 4 cores/unit. He nailed another Mega just yesterday. |

Agreed. PPSE to nail the first prime (and TdP badge) and then off to PPS Mega. The GPU will be parked on GFN 17Low/Mega for me. |

Without wanting to add further confusion, with TdP it is the reporting date that counts and not when the unit was downloaded, correct? |

Correct.
In theory, you *could* bunker a lot of primes.
In practice, that would be a very poor strategy unless your goal to to get to the top of the double checker leaderboard! LOL

You and I, starting on Feb 1st (00:00 UT) and running for 29 consecutive (solar) days, have a personal meeting and battle in front of the whole world: who will have the most primes as well as who will accumulate the greater total prime score by the end of Feb 29, 2020?
As for most primes, size does NOT matter as long as it meets the purposes of TdP (ie T5K). As for the total prime score, once again, it is the PG score assigned by the admins for each PRIMARY find and which will be summed for each one and compared between the two participants on Mar 1st at 0:00 UT.
Who draws first blood is most welcome but in no way is a reflection of the ultimate winner in either one or both of the aforementioned metrics. |

I expect my prize from the last challenge to be on my door step soon just in case your draw the first blood :)
So I will be running 16's and ppse's at the start but then IF I find a prime will be switching over to mega tasks. I'm pretty sure I can't compete on a overall level of total primes as our own Mr Scott can attest too.

I just setup all of my CPU to do two cores per task: this is first year all my CPU are FMA3 capable: and now I sow little difference: if I use one core per task then it need 610 second, but if I take two cores per task then do it from 480-510 seconds.
Must wait until TDP start to see what will be best strategy. I know: as any year must made compromise between number of tasks and tasks when I am first!
But most important I setup zero wait:until workunit is not returned no new one is downloaded. Those few seconds can make difference between prime and DC :)

I will be using MT for PPSE because I have only 3 million credit till Jade and I am reasonably sure I do not want to reach Jade yet.
And the more obvious reason to increase the chances of being first.
I understand that by doing less tasks, I may also be cutting down on my chances of being first, which I am guessing is less important than using MT. |
|
|
|
I will begin PPSE with no MT and watch my 1st finish percentage.
In case it drops below, say, 60% then I'll start MT. Initially 2 threads, then 4, if needed (only got 4 cores here)

This is my current statistic: of 167 done PPSE, I was first in 135, so around 80% of time I was first.

Holy cow the 2080 runs 17 megas fast and that's not even the 2080 ti. No wonder I'm doing a lot of double checking on some of the other cards. |

Here's a fun comparison between my haswell xeon server and RR's i7-4790 -- xeon running single-core, RR running 4 core on a PPSE task:
Hint: he got it done first :)

That's one of my older systems. The funny thing I saw was that the reported time was much later than the run time so it was sitting around waiting to run for a bit.
Edit: or I need to check the network on that system. |

One problem I have come across is double checkers who let their units expire after the four-day grace period. The unit goes out again and the sucker who gets it is guaranteed a DC role. |

I've just started running GFN-17 megas with the 2080Ti cards:

9960X - 196 sec
9980XE - 202 sec
And also GFN-16:

I'm confused. I've looked at your system with dual 2080 cards running 17 mega - it's best time is 272 sec, but some are as high as nearly 700 sec. |

Correct, I was confused. I have 2 cards in that system and one of them is a 980 and it looks like a 2080 in pg. |

Ah that is a relief - I couldn't work out why some times were high 600s.
The 2080 is a great card.
If I compare cards to sharks - the 2080 is a 5 metre great white shark, the 2080Ti, a 6.5 metre. Both will happily munch your leg off. I hope the 2080Ti on the computer I am typing this on doesn't get any ideas. "Man savaged by his own computer" |

17 mega 198ish on the ti
let's just say I'm banking on lots of other people still having old, slow hardware :)
I just did some serious scientific research (read: totally bullshitted through it) on PPSE CPU tasks on the old faithful dual-xeon:
16x single-core: 20 min / 0-3 firsts per page of results
8x dual-core: 13 min / 5-10 firsts per page of results
4x 4c: 7.6 min / 15-18 firsts per page of results
2x 8c: 5.5 min / didnt bother to run enough to check
1x 16c: 10 min / what a waste :)
I think I'm going to start with 2 core tasks on PPSE and see where it goes from there.
also thinking about just mixing up gfn 16 and 17 -- or otherwise doing 16 until I (hopefully) find something then switch to 17 |

yes, I turned HT off in the bios... those machines have two 8 core cpus each |

I think it was for last year's event, we had some data for the time delta between server sending 1st and 2nd tasks out for a given unit. For short units like PPSE I think I came to the conclusion that the throughput increase from doing more tasks at 1 per core increases your chance of being first for a prime than being faster but doing fewer due to scaling inefficiencies. The server sending time difference in this case was on average relatively big compared to the crunching time. I don't know if this is still the case. Edit: that was for a "fast" Intel CPU. Similar would apply to Zen 2 CPUs. For slower CPUs like Zen 1 or older/low clocked models, 2 threads might make sense.
Of course, if you're doing bigger tasks, the server difference becomes less of a factor and speed becomes dominant. |
|
|
|
I'm gonna try the split core idea on a couple of systems. Run 2 x 3 and 2 x 4 - one thing I do see, these faster gpus will make pg send down many more units than needed just to keep up. I think my 2080 ti has 4 16's all the time even though it's a single card because they get done well before what ever time is set for new downloads.
I'm also going to open up the number of tasks allowed to see what happens cause I can't get ppse tasks on a few boxes |

I tried running PPSE with single core and a task across 2 cores.
I am definitely going with single core.
9900K - single 665 sec - double 565 sec
9960X - single 380 sec - double 290 sec
9980XE - single 400 sec - double 300 to 370 sec
Not sure why I was getting approx 370 sec on some 9980XE 2 core tasks. That computer is a bag of laughs. |

All hands on deck .... an hour before the official start time, Prefs change for an all-out battle with PPSE (lots of PPS Mega in progress right now with a really good proportion of first completions).
I had another PPSE prime just yesterday (primary checker). :-) |

I think Michael said it best: one core for fast systems and two cores for slow(er) systems. I will be going this route myself as well during TdP (modus operandi for me all this month). |

I had to try it out. It's the best way to work out what to do.
And how I am thinking about badges now - I will run PPSE all through TdP, taking the badge to Jade - so I won't have a full set of Turquoise LLR. I've got about 900,000 credit left to do for SGS to reach Turquoise. |

We are rapidly approaching groundhog day - February 2nd.
As TdP is in the 2nd month, 2 being the first prime number - could February 2nd hold some significance?
For AtP - the person getting the best prime score on groundhog day could be known as the groundhog for the year? A groundhog is after all some kind of large rat. |

While I kicked off PPSE at the start, I forgot about GFN16 which I only just added. House temps are already getting scary... gonna have to choose what and how much I crunch more carefully. |

My pending credit for PPSE is sitting at 189 units.
My pending credit for GFN-16 is sitting at 53 units.
Those pending credits have potential to be primes?
I ask that because I don't know if primes are listed in discoveries before the DC comes in. |

I would expect any prime in the Pending list to show up in your home page and where we have a breakdown of primes found by project ("Proth Prime Search (PPS, PPSE, PPS-Mega & PPS-DIV) tasks" in this case) but not anywhere else. This is how I knew a number of hours ago that I had stumbled upon a PPSE prime and prior to it being listed anywhere else. |

Thanks Michael. Pending credits are in a quantum state of both being a prime and not a prime.
Edit: That may not be exactly true if I can look at pending credit's results by slogging through them. I'll shut up now. I'll leave quantum to more qualified entities such as cats :) |

Michael, many hours ago I had a "15" showing under "Primes found" for "Proth Prime Search (PPS, PPSE, PPS-Mega & PPS-DIV) tasks" whereas the hyperlink to my list of primes had a total of 14 primary/secondary PPSE discoveries.
Edit: Unless the system is awaiting some sort of confirmation (ex T5k). |

Woohoo! Looks like I got my 1st prime on the 1st day. Got the e-mail, although it isn't showing on the leaderboard yet.
I had a good number of finds in January (PPSE, GFN15, GFN16) and only one email came through out of eight total finds as primary discoverer.
Hopefully you have better luck.
Congrats on the find. |
