Wish I had more power, even rented 2 quad Xeon cpu-optimized servers from digitalocean to help out for the challenge. Alas I'm far down the ranks. I'm thinking GPU's are the real king this challenge.

CPUs are the knife to a gun fight on this one.
Even a low end GPU can out perform a mid-high end CPU here.
Using my CPUs might account for 4-5 spots for me at most and the returns diminish even more at higher level standing.

I'm going for total throughput for the challenge. Which on my systems means single threaded for two and multi-threaded for one.
In testing on an i7-4790 I found that 4 single threaded tasks and 2 dual threaded tasks yielded very similar throughput numbers, but with enough difference that I would loose a few units from the challenge. Outside of the challenge I would probably run 2 tasks on 2 threads each with that CPU. Running a 4 threaded task on that CPU was very disappointing.
Single threading: 78 minutes per task (78 minutes for 4 tasks)
Dual threading: 42 minutes per task (84 minutes for 4 tasks)
Quad threading: 25 minutes per task (100 minutes for 4 tasks)
Seeing that result was enough to tell me that single threading on the i5-8400 is the only way to go.
If you have an older CPU, or a CPU that lacks "good" AVX/FMA3 support then it would be worth benchmarking whether multi-threading of some kind is good for you or not.

Started with 31 Virtual Machine Cores and just nearly doubled that with 10 more Digital Ocean droplets tonight. 61 VM cores in it for the challenge. Now it should get interesting.
Price for the new 30 cores for 5 days is $25. Entertainment budget used to be way more than $25 so this is entertaining, so spending a well spent $25 on entertaining, helping myself, and helping the team in the name of Primegrid, Primes, and Mathematics.
This is began with a referral code I was given for $50 in free credit at http://www.digitalocean.com
I had a little Linux experience, but not much, and I found this to be fairly simple for basic Linux knowledge. Create a VM, connect to it, run a few commands and install boinc, configure, and you are up and crunching on a remote machine.
The 3core 1GB memory standard VM's are great for LLR if you can get some Xeon Gold CPUs. Running the ones setup now all as -t1 but you can run it -t3 for more speed. Lotta bang for the buck. That 3c VM costs $15 for an entire month. That's 50 cents a day! Cup of coffee costs double that around me.

My home machines kinda suck, so just spun up 5 machines with 3-core Xeon Golds on digitalocean. :) hope it helps.

We should start a separate thread about this tho it's perfect for challenges. Fire a bunch up, crunch, destroy and delete them when done.
I would be willing to help with that thread. Been using DO for years. It just took me spinning up 10 3-core nodes to get the 5 ones I wanted with Xeon Golds. So that's about a 50/50 shot and in reviewing the Oktober challenge the Gold cpu was significantly faster than the 2650 (?).
The cheaper "standard" node with Gold was actually higher performance than the CPU-specific nodes that cost 2x.
Looking at the cost 0.022/hour*5 machines* 24 hours = $2.64 a day :) I might spin up another $5 just to help out during the event. |

Cache in this case refers to how many days worth of tasks you have saved up.
Some people like to have a cache of tasks if they have intermittent internet or other issues with constantly getting new tasks.
Having a cache of tasks at PG is not recommended unless otherwise necessary. Having a cache means you will likely never be 1st on a task so any prime you find you would be the double checker.

I only know how to do it in the standard BOINC manager.
In BOINCTasks, other managers, or command line there will be different options.
In the BOINC manager make sure you're in Advanced view and then go to Options > Computing Preferences.
Once there make sure that "Store at least X days of work" and "Store up to an additional X days of work" are both set to 0

GPU challenges happen a lot here too.
The final challenge of this year is GFN21/22/Lucky and that'll be mostly GPU. You can also do multi-threaded GFN21 on the CPU with an app config entry.

Quick reminder the 321 Sieve 1 day challenge begins in about 22hrs from now.
For 321 Sieve hyper threads (HT) do help throughput. So if you have more threads than cores you can use them and gain a bit more throughput. Times will increase slightly but I haven't seen anything double in times necessarily when doubling your cores with all the threads.
Remember this is only a 24hr challenge!
AMD chips will be competitive as AVX is not part of 321 Sieve.

i3's can be the most affected.. my laptop is that way...
however, on the Ryzen 3950x times are 2110s for 16 threads vs 2800 or so for 32 threads... very little difference for double the tasks.
I'd but curious how a 1900x like Russ's does in comparison. |

I have about 35 instances on Rytis's The Science Cloud aka TSC running... very good service and highly recommend it. Easier to setup than Digital Ocean. I will make a quick walk through eventually for anyone interested. ILW8 and Myself and Darkclown seemed to have maxed out his total available instances this time tho. It's a work in progress and he didn't expect such high demand.

You can run anything you want for TdP.
If you're just looking to get on the board at all, or take a stab at the Yellow Jersey then PPSE for CPU and GFN16 for GPU are the ways to go.
If you want to try for the Red Jersey then you can run larger projects and hope for the best. High chance of nothing being found though.

Do you think it is safe to use more than 50% of processors for PPSE since these tasks are single threaded?
I am currently running 50% but it would be beneficial for obvious reasons to go higher if heat were not an issue and it will not be in my case I have a MO-RA3 external radiator. This may seem like overkill but it is the only way I can keep my 3 GPUs from cooking.

It turns out I can crank through more jobs if I run on more than 50% CPU. I take a penalty in time per job though reducing the number of 1sts. I tried running on 95% of CPU and runs went from 600-700 seconds to 1000-1200 per job. I am going back to the recommended 50%, fewer jobs completed but more 1sts. |

Yes we can. Fanastic job all.
In fact it was so utterly demolishing Mr Gelly genereated 24.3% of all the credit in the challenge & our top 2 users combined generated 32.2%. Beat that at the CUL/WOO challenge - see you on 18th Nov! |

It is not possible to se Viktor Svatners computers, but if anyone dumps anything significant, it will be him. Upon a closer look on this graph page https://statsgr.id/team.php?challenge_id=2020_9&team_id=46 it is obvious he has quite a machine room.
The first period he was dormant but on day 2 he started out with roughly 14M points pr day. That equals 24 V100 or 70 T4 (!) On day 6 he proofed the ability to more than double that output from dec 26 18:00 to dec 27 18:00 with around 36M points(!!) but his output has settled at roughly 20M+ pr day. Assuming he is hiding this potential and dumping that at the end of the challenge we are looking at at least 64M points we need to be ahead.
Now i have no idea if that is the plan, but i wouldn't be surprised.
