For 4 days, my total work done does not change; its stuck, as if BOINC is not running? i see:

Total credit 59,316

and it never changes. I have tried to make computing settings very liberal but it does not help. Can someone check my settings?

Thanks,

- Kevin

According to the server, you have one computer, and that computer is currently working on two tasks.

One task is an AP27 task which your computer downloaded on June 15th, but seems to have not started working on until June 17th. As of 17:30 UTC yesterday, it was 52% done.

The other task is a Cullen task which your computer downloaded on May 31st. It started working on the task on June 3rd. It's been making unsteady progress since then, sometimes as much as 10% in one day, but sometimes no progress at all. As of yesterday, it was 74% complete.

The reason you don't see any "progress" in your credit is because your computer has not returned any tasks in a while. When it returns those tasks -- assuming your result passes validation -- you'll get credit. We don't give out credit until the tasks are complete.

For what it's worth, "making the settings very liberal", assuming you mean "allowing all projects" is rarely a good idea. Our tasks range in size from tasks that run for minutes to tasks that run for weeks, and you're not likely to like the results if you let the server randomly assign tasks to your computer. It's usually better to learn a little bit about the different projects and pick something that suits both you and your computer. If nothing else, pick tasks with a size appropriate for both your computer (small tasks for slow computers, large tasks for fast computers), and usage patterns (large tasks if your computer is available to run BOINC 24/7, small tasks if the computer is only running part time.)

I try to keep the laptop running 24 hours but I could not tell it was doing work, so I got worried.

The phrase "For what it's worth, "making the settings very liberal", means more cpu, more memory, etc... I did not mean "allowing all projects" and in fact I have only one checked: AP27. This is just a laptop so I figured it could not run LLR.

So a week ago I unchecked Cullen, which shows as LLR and hit Update; so AP27 should be my only task. I did this several times, hitting Update, and rebooting, but Cullen is always there. It is my understanding that my little lapto can only run non-LLR projects so why is it working on Cullen - and why can't I get Cullen out of the list?

Thanks for all your help,

Kevin

Your preferences ONLY affect what tasks the server sends to your computer. They do not affect the tasks already at your computer. The Cullen task that was sent to your computer is still running and will continue to run until it completes.

You laptop is (obviously) capable of running LLR since it is doing so right now. It's just slow. LLR also runs hotter than sieve tasks, and probably hotter than AP27 (I'm not sure on your computer), so it will probably run the fans faster and more loudly. If you don't want the computer to continue running that task, you need to abort it from the BOINC manager on your computer. Nothing you do on a website will affect the tasks already on your computer.

If it was me, however, I definitely wouldn't abort it since it's already three-quarters done.

I see! Well thank you for answering all my questions. This Cullen task is over 90% so i will definitely let it finish.

I wonder if other new users have similar questions to what I have wondered. For example the Work Done line could mention 'from completed tasks' somehow?

I am still aiming to get a much faster desktop!
