I7-2700K with HT is off ( so 4 logical core)
Resource share is set to 0
CPU usage is set to 100%

I use this in app_config.xml in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.primegrid.com

<app_config> <app> <name>llrPPSE</name> <fraction_done_exact/> <report_results_immediately/> </app> <app_version> <app_name>llrPPSE</app_name> <cmdline>-t 2</cmdline> <avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus> </app_version> </app_config>

Boinc download 4 task at first, and I wait until it is processed as Mike say. But after that, also Boinc always download two task after one is finished and uploaded :(
Boinc version 7.14.2

So how to solve this mystery?

Instead only two running task I have two running task and one waiting task

Is problem in running GFN 18 : will I terminate that?

That looks like only one task waiting to start (running two threads)

shouldn't the avg_cpu be set to 2 if using -t 2 in command line?

another strange observation with this i7-9700k: when running PPSE tasks single-threaded, this cpu is slower than my old xeon E5-2670 -- it seems that the i7 should be way faster at 4.0 ghz versus 2.6 ghz for the xeon. i7 also has crazy fast memory running at high speed.

rough time for 9700k PPSE, 1 thread: 27 min
rough time for E5-2670, 1 thread: 19:40

I feel like something is just not right, but it's been running a couple of months and no errors or hiccups. any ideas?

From your post in the TDP thread, you said your 9700k averages 593s/task when running single-threaded. Is this the same computer?
Also, were you running GPU tasks when you got the 593 seconds per tasks results?

I too have found my 9700k to be underperforming running 7 tasks singlethreaded.

Hah, I swore that I had posted something about this recently, but could not find it... was looking at the wrong thread!.

yes, this is the same computer, and most likely I was also running GFN21 in my earlier test, and currently running GFN16 on the GPU. this machine has a single GTX1060 installed, it's PPSE speed is somewhere between my 4790 and 7700k systems (and those each have two GPUs installed as well, running the same mix of tasks)

I changed the 9700k to run PPSE on two cores, and I'm now seeing times around 16-17 minute processing times in my BoincTasks history for that machine.

Tim, those are terrible times for a new CPU. I am getting 700-750 seconds on two threads with an old i5-3470 and around 950 seconds on an old i5-2500 running single threads (and those are Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge that have AVX, but not FMA3!). Something is not right with that system. Off the top of my head, here are some things to check:

1) Heat. Is it throttling the CPU via a BIOS setting?
2) Does it have Intel's SpeedStep? If on, turn it off.
3) Under powered PS? I have seen these (or a failing one that runs not near its wattage efficiency) lead to slower than normal times.
4) Another process running in the background (maybe boot into safe mode and see if times improve there?).
5) Stop running on the GPU for an hour and see what times do. GFN16 should hit the CPU harder than larger GFN, and this might be more evident on the 9700k since it has a VERY different cache structure compared to Intel 7xxx an earlier.

And one more thing. It's a small detail but I've found that unless you change your power plan to make it never allow it to sleep, never put the hard drive to sleep and use 100% on the processor it will never use the full cycles.

It is doing that because it will download new work when you have only 3 minutes or less to go on a computation (even with cache set to zero). So it is likely downloading one to replace the reported work and another to go with the second task that is less than 3 minutes to completion.

I'll take a look at these things this evening. I dont think it's throttling due to heat, but it does run on the hotter side compared to other CPUs, it's also a new PS, 650W maybe (I'll confirm)

I suggest trying the stuff I posted way down there somewhere:

I have no idea why it works or makes any difference, but:

in boinc preferences, set the machine to use 25% of CPU
in app_config, set the task as either:

-t 1
Avg_cpu = .25

--or--

-t 2
avg_cpu = .5

this should make it wait until the task is done, and CPU is idle before requesting new work (you lose 6-10 seconds in my experience while the next task is fetched)

Last year we have big disscusion. I have manage to kill that time window ,and all time my computers download new task only second before uploading result, not 3 minutes before.
Today I cannot repeat that. Maybe is problem in Boinc version

ok, I looked into these items, and didnt find anything out of the ordinary, and GPU didnt affect times significantly when I paused GPU to run some tasks.
I did find that asrock, the mainboard mfg released a bios update and intel microcode update just a few days ago. I updated the bios, and BOOM, I now have PPSE times around 6:45 and no significant difference when running a GPU task. Now to try to figure out what they changed in the new version, there were no obvious release notes...

correction: the 6:45 time was actually running two cores, just changed to 1c to see how that works.
this sucker is running very hot now -- core max is 97C, but shows as still 18C from tjMax -- keeping a close eye on this one, might have to slow it down a little because that high temp makes me a bit nervous. it has the giant noctua cooler on it, and is clean...
