To the Admins:

Gridcoin has been caught gaming the system and their access disabled on Collatz: http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/forum_thread.php?id=1574#24917.

May be worth a heads-up since they also participate here on PG.

Edit: See also http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/forum_thread.php?id=1576

Which is one reason we double check all work. Here's hoping this worked as intended.

Jim and I just checked. There's no indication that anyone from Gridcoin has attempted to cheat here. It's why we double check everything, even sieves. Most people in the prime finding community think we're crazy for double checking sieves. :)

The most disturbing part about reading the thread over at Collatz is that apparently they were also cheating on SRBase. For conjectures, that's a disaster if a prime was missed.

Cheating also hurts the Gridcoin community, whose main goal is to encourage people to move from useless hashing of cryptomining to something useful (=BOINC). Cryptocurrency mining is estimated to use about 13% of the TOTAL computing power globally, which is a crazy waste of computing power and electricity.

So lets catch the cheaters, but please dont assume that all gridcoiners are cheaters :) Most of us are just former or new boincers who want to help solve the wastefulness problem of cryptos.

There is two type of people who mining: professionals ( with many rigs) and people ( like me) with few "lower end card"
I mine from time to time. I dont expect any big profit: but always pay my electricity bill for whole house, so if not: it is OK by that side :)
Still after many years , many people doesnot know at all what is bitcoin ( or any other coin) what is mining, how is mining make: coins for them are big mystery. Yesterday I read on Net there is first town in USA that will forbid mining of BTC. Many county see danger in mining cryptocurrencies that cannot be controlled under state.
This story will have ( and have even now) big influence on peoples on Earth). And whatever end of this story will be... history will show what was ( if any) consequences BTC mining have for citizens of our small blue dot in space :)

Primegrid as project has very solid number of GPU cards. Primegrid can make own cryptocurrencies and called them Crytoprime ( for example) and make base coin as token: so every user that make PPS ( for example) in % shares of all got some coins for his effort ( like Gridcoin do)
But on the other hand that require strong backup, people who will develop wallet, few tens or even 100 BTC as initial capital for making that cryptocurrencies available on strong markets etc etc..

Then we immediately got similar case as gridcoin: some people will sniff profit, become cheater, try to make millions of invalid PPS workunit to get his own share quickly.....

Time will show. But let Primegrid be out of grid, let we all make math, find prime, enjoy in our badges. I like Primegrid in way he is now, I admire whole group of people that make Primegrid possible. We dont need to spoil that.

Several months ago I searched about it after I had learned about gridcoin. I learned how to mine with grcpool . After a month I could make only 1 Grc(gridcoin) my laptop worked 23h/ a day in that month. My laptop hasn' a good performance of course but even so at least it should have given the amount of electricity used by my laptop. I decided to stop it. Rac is important in grc mining. if you suspend the project for a few days it will go down so fast. Rac affects the magnitude there is a formula about it. as I remember aprox. 0.25*magnitude is the the grc that will added to your pool account. the Magnitude you have the day before is kept and increases everyday if you stay. So magnitude will grow everyday. But even so I could make only 1 grc in the first month. in long period of time if you have several pc which have good performance it may work to pay your electricity. if you want to learn whether it works, it is working. Know that one of the many things you have to do is to join gridcoin team to mine in grc pool.

Gridcoin , first of all is not coin at all : it is token. You have daily quote of coins, and they are divided to all users.
Second, I dont know for any coin that can pay anything mining on laptop. Laptop has very weak performance.
And third, I mine many coins , but I never sow coin like Gridcoin! I His own developers mine when they wont and how they want. Blockchain was extremely unstable ,and wallet ( using for solo mining ) was unable to be open even 48 hours. So gridcoin is s--t coin...

Mining profitability isn't about performance, it is about efficiency. In general, I find low to mid range "gaming laptops" are able to give a profit after power costs, but it is pretty small. On my current one with a 1050, I think I was looking at tens of cents profit a day when I tested it. It could increase more if I enable CPU too but the fans get seriously loud.

I haven't looked much at the more minor coins like these. Stick to the bigger more well known ones unless you like to speculate.

How GC pools its users also messes up the user leaderboards of projects, and it would have been nice if they hadn't co-opted the organic team system to operate also.

But, it is an exceedingly minor thing to disrupt the gamification/community elements of BOINC compared to messing with the integrity of the project data itself.

If the data cannot be trusted then we might as well all pack up and go home.

That's one of the reasons PrimeGrid uses quorum=2 on everything now. It's very hard to cheat when every result is being double checked.

EDIT: This was put in place long before Gridcoin came around. They didn't invent cheating. ;)

The person that cheated just HAPPENED to be a part of the GridCoin Team, they could have been a part of yours or even my Team. They chose GridCoin because they found a way to make even more money in the short term, and in the end got a loophole fixed at at least one Boinc Project, that's a good thing and will at least help prevent the next person from exploiting that loophole. As long as they give out credits, cash or whatever Boinc will be subject to cheaters, heck even WAAAY back in the very early days people cheated at Seti and they only gave out one credit per workunit. The person in charge of the GridCoin Pool the individual was a part of froze the individuals account and is/was investigating what to do about the situation going forward, so in the end the individual got nothing for their cheating! And they got booted off the GridCoin Team in the process.
