So I would like to build a computer to just run PrimeGrid, but I don't have the expertise nor experience to do so. Is there anyone who could point me in the right direction? All of the websites that I find are about building gaming computers or bitcoin mining computers. I would like to build a computer with as many CPU cores as possible.

- Thank you in advance.

The first thing you need to decide is what exactly you want to do. If you want to help with GFN, AP27, PPS-SV or Manual Sieving, you'll be focusing your budget on the GPUs. If you're main goal is the other projects, your focus is more on the CPU part of the equation, with different projects having different ways to go about it. Or, you could just build a well rounded PC that kinda works for a bit of everything; there's really no wrong choice here.

Figure what you want and then we'll be able to better help you out.

Rule number 1 is you want to get an Intel CPU rather than AMD. There's a huge difference in performance with LLR.

A few hundred to start but I want to be able to add more over time.

A few hundred and add more later aren't really a good fit. A computer you can put together for that little will lack important features for PG and won't have the upgrade options you really want without replacing major components first (that is, you'd basically be building another computer). I've put something together for you for just over $600 (without OS or GPU), that is entry level for the current gen Coffee Lake-S platform, but is also ready for PG's performance optimizations, and can be added to as well as upgraded over time, hence the oversized PSU and upgraded cooler. This particular example can support up to a 6 core 8700k (and overclock it), fast memory, and at least 2 GPUs. This is also a little short of being a daily driver build, you'd want more memory and an SSD if you want to go that route. More than 6 cores currently means kilobucks, and if I didn't just have to buy a new transmission for my car, would be where I was planning on going.

Instead of building a new machine, is it possible to upgrade the ones you have instead? For instance, swaping the Fx / APU system with another CPU + Mobo + RAM combo would be the best bang for your buck, as you can reuse the rest of the stuff.

If so, I suggest getting an i5 8400, the cheapest Z370 mobo and a kit of 2x8 RAM, preferrably a 2800~3200mhz one.

I can't really help much with this. Several years ago I spent $400 building my Mom a "surf the web and read email" computer. At that point I came to the conclusion that for anything under $500ish you're better off buying a pre-built.

Either plan on saving up and start researching for what will work best based on what you plan to spend or start looking into refurbished computers on places like Newegg.

Do your research, there are some boxes with a decent CPU/RAM and an OS for very little money.

Example for $300 that both have 8GB RAM and come with Win10 Pro:

i5 4th Gen 4590 (4 core 4 thread @ 3.30 GHz)
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883286403

Xeon E3-1240 v2 (4 core 8 thread @ 3.40 GHz)
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883284905

(started this post with I can't help much and then wrote a wall of text)

Edit to add that you'll want a CPU with AVX2 which eliminates a lot of the older ones. Both the listed examples have AVX2.

A very ugly but functional option is:

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883287716

remove the side pannel and leave it off installing a gpu like

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137128

and powering it seperately with a psu like

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=100-N1-0400-RX

This is ugly but functional, if I were to do it I'd get a better gpu like

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126133

but that would be more then a few hundred in USD.

*INTEL CPU!* Also hyperthreading helps with sieve tasks but cores matter more. a i5 4 core without hyperthreading is almost equal to a i7 4 core with hyperthreading.

(these are canadian peso's so find something similar in your currency and geographical location).
