So RX 460 and RX 470 have now been officially announced, with availability in early August.

Starting with the 470, it is a slightly cut down 480, with about 11% less execution units and 5% lower stock clock, as well as an 18% cut in total memory bandwidth. This together gains you 20% reduction in TDP, and one not so reputable site claims the MSRP is about 75-78% that of the 480. The more reputable sites do not claim anything on pricing. Still, if this holds out, it will be the performance per watt and bang for buck leader over the 480. The lower power means it would comfortably fit in the power range of the PCIe slot and a single 6 pin connector and AMD can't afford any more mistakes like the original 480 here.

The 460 is less than half the cores of a 470 but ball park half the price of a 480, so this isn't going to be a value option. Low cost, yes, but not value. The possible use of this card is if you can't use 6 or 8 pin power connectors, as it is supposed to be low enough power not to need one.

With the GTX 1050 pending, it will be interesting to see who wins this round at this price range.

NVIDIA has been hitting home runs so far with their 10 series.

hm, can't decide what I should buy now ...
The amd cards drawing much more power but have also more flops on the paper. But in benchmarks the 1060 with much lower flops is better then the rx480 ... looks like the drivers from amd aren't great ...

For a small amount extra, the GTX 1070 may even be a better buy. They can be had for $399 from Newegg (see the Gigabyte version).

I'm also like you in Europe, ... so no shine $ deals ;)
But yeah, the 1070 looks like the best deal.
Got my eyes on a EVGA 1070 FTW Gaming, because of the custom board design with more power lanes.

In benchmarks the rx 460 is slower than a gtx 950.

rx 470 should get the most perf./$ after the prices settle.

I just looked up the (gaming) performance and I forgot what I wrote in the top post, which sums it up. Right now there's very little price to separate the 470/480, and they're both in 1060 territory still.

Think I will wait longer. Still need to wait for cooler weather and the arrival of AP27 before I could unleash them.

Unrelated to the above, I just got a TON of watercooling kit today... will see how far you can OC a 980Ti that thermally throttles all the time on air :)

That' cool weather can't come soon enough.

I have stuff turned down (like crunching on 2/8 cores on my mac pros) or off (like my 6770k/290x box). They aren't overheating, but the house is.

My electric bill for July was $490 USD with all the air conditioning running and all machines crunching. A tad higher than i would prefer...

Prices are still pretty ridiculous for anywhere that has stock.

I agree fully with pricing in Europe being even more ridiculous!

Been spoiled the last week, highs in the upper 70s (F), lows in the upper 50s. That apparently is going to end for a week or so. It was nice having the a/c off for a change.

I actually found an 8G sapphire 480 for list on amazon, and prime eligible, too! Its on the way...

Speaking of ping pong... We had some ping pong sized hail here not too long ago. We're replacing the roof, 7 windows, the gutters, and repainting and sealing the 2 sides of the house that got hit. Most of my friends' windshields and windows got obliterated, my windows were spared but the hood and top are pretty dented up

The ping pong is nearly over in the Olympics. I think the team evens are last.

Erm... I hope everyone assumes that I'm not an idiot who wants to start an AMD vs. NVIDIA abuse contest, of course people buy whatever they want. But with the 10xx series, I think it's pretty much unanimously agreed that Pascal has AMD beaten in terms of power consumption and processing power.

I mostly look at Techpowerup's reviews, which you can read and pick out the relevant stuff from. The forums/comments there are mostly terrible though, you know, same old arguments with no evidence backing anything up.

Have you seen that they've released a Titan X Pascal? Absolutely ridiculous price, if you can afford that then I suppose you might as well buy a Tesla and get more FP64 power.

Point is though, I think the 1070 and 1080 pretty much kill off AMD for now. Again, sorry for the "hijack", I've just not seen any discussion of NVIDIA's latest here, aside from AA and Steve having a quick exchange. If a new thread should be started and this post be moved there, just say and tell me how to do it, please; but I won't go on about it or anything, just throwing it into the mix as a genuine "Why would you buy new AMD stuff at the moment?"

The new cards from both sides are still a bit silly priced due to availability and demand. In the mid range, I'd lean towards the 1060 over the 480, but the 470 could be interesting if it actually was cheaper than the 480. I wonder where the 1050 might end up...

For my crunchers, I'm looking for both up front costs and running costs, and in UK cash I'm looking for under £200, preferably less but it has to scale well in value. Ideal case I'd like cards without extra 6/8 power connectors, so we need to go lower still than the current announced cards. On that note, wonder if nvidia still has the advantage in AP27 with the newer cards?

You triggered a memory; I had to search for it a little bit, but what about this? I know it's only a 950 but at least that does mean it's a Maxwell and so will perform well with that GFN OCL transform which nothing else seems to be much good at (I forget which one, I assume you know what I'm talking about though). You can get two of them for ~£200, it seems.

I take back part of what I said. I have now seen 470's available sub-200.

As for the no power connector 950's, I've yet to see one for sale, let alone near 100 which you'd have to go to 750Ti territory for. Regular 950's are still from 120 ball park. I'm happy to wait. Still far too hot to run anything.

I am hoping and assuming that as we approach Xmas we will see pricing become more reasonable.

Well, my list price ($239 USD) sapphire 8G 480 showed up. I won't have a chance to try it until Sunday.

I'm going to try to replace my 290x with it. As long as performance is close, it should be a major win in the "heat" and "earsplitting noise when you spin the fans up high enough so the card doesn't throttle" categories.

I pulled valley and heaven benchmarks from the 290x in anticipation of swapping it out, and I'll run them on the 480, as well as compare GFN19 performance (well, that will happen regardless).

Are brands such as ZOTAC, PNY, Gainworth and Palit credible? They seem to be new players in the market and beside the major names such as MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS etc.

Credible, yeah, I suppose you just have to rely on the fans not being inadequate and/or noisy, and any other quirks like bits of the cooler physically getting in the way of other things. But... how do you know? You can't really tell what any cooler will sound like to your ears, even with a review site quoting dB figures, can you...

I suppose the best thing you can do is read as many reviews as possible; ignoring people who say it's the worst thing in the world and set fire to their house, and also people who say that the day they bought it was better than their wedding day.

I think Gainward have a proven history of at least a few years, unless I'm mixing up my brand names. Zotac have been making CPU coolers for a while. I'll leave it to others to make any more comments because I've not owned the most graphics cards in the world. I was trying to remember how many I've had, but then it gets complicated because of the older days. Since 2000 I've had something like 10 or 12, I bet some people here have had 50 or more.

I've had my MSI 580 fail and nearly brick itself, literally shredding one of its fans and waking me up in the middle of the night, so I suppose when you compute 24/7 then it might simply come down to luck and dust management. I had an Asus 560Ti when the 5xx range was the latest, and it's still working perfectly in a mate's system as a gaming card, after doing about 2½ years of 24/7 sieving here. I've never had, or even seen, an Asus product fail, aside from a power surge during a pretty violent thunderstorm which wiped out my Asus mobo, and also my PSU and 4770K. It's possible that the PSU didn't deal with it too well (Fractal Design), but it still doesn't put the blame at the door of Asus.

Edit: Just checking the naming/spelling of "Gainward", I see that the brand got sold to Palit some time ago, so I suppose you can assume they would have the same sort of quality control.

I have an Evga 460 that's run none stop for years. Not sure what it's made of but I am very partial to this card. It's my first gpu and has never let me down. Had an msi 570 bite the dust but that was my fault for not checking it. Fan failure. Brands are pretty generic as you roll the dice on an individual card.

Both my 580s still going after 5 years of distrib computing & being dusted every few months (not always used full force, especially with upcoming UK temperatures...).

Had a GT240 that lasted 2.5 years but never seemed to have auto fan control. It died during the 2013 Oxford Cambridge Boat Race.

Any chance of an AP27 test timing too? I don't think there were any in the thread. I wonder if current gen AMD is any faster than previous.

Benchmark time: (pun intended)

About to swap out my 290x for a 480, at least temporarily in my 6700k machine.

290x has the following AB settings changed from default, to eliminate throttling:
Core voltage -50mv
Power limit +50%
core/mem 1000/1250 (stock)
Fan profile is as follows:
20% up to 60C
60% at 70C
100% at 76C

Heaven (1920x1080, fullscreen, ultra preset w/ 8xAA, extreme tesselization):
score 1386
FPS 55
Min FPS 27.7
Max FPS 111

Valley (1920x1080, extreme HD preset)
score 2601
FPS 62.2
Min FPS 31.5
Max FPS 118.3

Genefer
OCL 104
OCL3 71
OCL4 82/44
OCL5 78

GFN19 task 1143386^524288+1 took 6671 seconds.

Now to put that 480 in...

[edit]Driver version was 16.8.1

RX 480
Stock 1266/2000 cpu/mem
MSI AB (even 4.3 beta) can't seem to touch the card. Can't even manipulate fan, so I'm going to have to look into that. It also can't pull gpu temp, so I suspect I'll have to look for core clock changes to presume that it is or isn't throttling.

Heaven (1920x1080, fullscreen, ultra preset w/ 8xAA, extreme tesselization):
score 1319
FPS 52.4
Min FPS 27.5
Max FPS 109.9

(So pretty close to 290x)

Valley (1920x1080, extreme HD preset)
score 2217
FPS 53
Min FPS 28.2
Max FPS 100.4

(Oof. Since this is also a game machine, looks like the 290x is going back in)

Genefer benchmarks not yet successfully run-no progress after 5 min on OCL or OCL4.

Running OCL, memory clock was only occasionally going to 2000 mhz, spending most of its time at 300, driver appeared to crash.
Running OCL4, looks like the gpu throttled right at the moments memory speed spiked to 2000mhz.

This isn't a good start.

Ok, apparently that machine didn't like the 480, or vice versa.

Tried it in an old(ish) i3 machine, with the following genfer benchmark results with stock settings:

OCL 88
OCL3 64
OCL4 77/45
OCL5 75

Estimated time for 1143386^524288+1 is about 7050 seconds. So not too terrible.

I had to use AMD's "wattman" app to get the card running how I wanted it. Specifically, AMD appears to have moved to a "let the card run as hot as we can let it to maximize cooling efficiency, don't let it get too loud so people notice, and throttle if it gets too hot" approach.

I prefer a steady (reasonable) temperature and spin the fan up as much as is necessary to keep it there or below.

With stock clocks/voltage, 2850 rpm on the fan is keeping at 73C with about 80 degree ambient.

£135, free delivery

Stretch to two of them, and either put them in an i3 system with the CPU dedicated to them, or put them in an i5 system and use one or two out of 4 CPU cores for crunching whatever else? They'll eat up OCL4 GFN units, won't they? Relative to cost and power draw of other things, of course.

From pictures of that card it looks like it has a power connector. And is also more expensive than I want to pay.

Well it doesn't sound like you want it, but here is an identically-priced card which does specify the 75W power draw, regardless of any pictures which might be misleading (admittedly the reviews on Amazon did say there was a power connector, so sorry about that). This seems to be the real deal though, and you can always send it back if it's not the 75W model because they advertised it falsely.

How much can you pay? I thought you said under £200?

As said I'm waiting for things to get cooler before I buy anyway, but I have a mix of crunchers and will have different needs for them.

For low power ones, where the PSU is likely too weak to drive a 150W GPU, and/or the case might have trouble with a hotter card, I'd like a low cost, low power card that isn't too slow. I've seen the 750Ti as low as £80 new before, but that is at the low end of useful crunching. I'm kinda waiting for something to come along at £100. The 460 is something to keep an eye on, but in value the 470 seems better, but I will then have the power connector. The 950 doesn't make value sense to me as it isn't cheap enough over a 960 to get, unless it is a low power no-connector one that apparently exists. The previously linked Asus card, go to their web page for it, the product shots show a power connector. Also note just because it is rated at 75W doesn't mean it wont need a power connector. That is the safe max that can be put through the PCIe slot, and the recent 480 fiasco has shown how complicated that is, since it is split over multiple voltage levels and balancing will be a pain. The only safe way to draw 75W is with a secondary power connector. The 750Ti is rated at 60W TDP so would have some headroom.

Moving to what I'd call mid range cruncher boxes. These have more of a PSU and I'd look up to £200 and up to 150W GPU power budget. This would be 470 territory. I don't know if the 1060 3GB might drop low enough to compete but the 6GB is a bit much currently. I already recently got a 970 to play with but I think I need to look forward unless pricing drops significantly as they clear old stock.

I'd also need to consider the project for course. I think AP27 might feature significantly so that would steer me towards nvidia anyway unless I see evidence to show AMD 400 series are much better than previous at it.

Well the second link looks like the no-power-connector one to me. If it isn't, like I said, it's only going to draw 75 watts, or you can send it back as being mis-advertised.

You said you wanted someting fast with no power connectors, and I tried. You said it wasn't for sale, but it is, and it's only £135. You can't really get a productive graphics card for less, unless someone else pays your electricity bill. Of course a 460 and 470 are going to need more power, they're early Fermi chips! It's hard to understand why you can't afford the very-low-power 950, considering what you've spent on the rest of your hardware.

Of course the 75W version is the no-power-connector one, by the way, why would anyone put a custom cooler with two fans on a 950 AND deliberately reduce the power draw over standard?

Oh never mind.

I have an old dual-core i5 sitting around, only one pcie slot, but that looks like the home for this thing for now. More GFN19, here we come.

[edit] I'd try my hand a gfn18, except brink owns all those primes....

From pictures of that card it looks like it has a power connector. And is also more expensive than I want to pay.

I can confirm the 480 definitely has a power connector :) and I understand the 470 to be identical. THe 460 doesn't have one (at least in reference design) but it also looks to be horribly nerfed.

I would have to agree, going the 750ti/950/whatever is the most powerful nvidia card that doesn't have a power connector route is probably the best way to go.

My impression of the 480 so far is a resounding meh. And the weaker cards I would suspect are even less impressive.

I can say it definitely pulls less power than a 290x under full load. But so do most cities.

The 460/470 I talk about is the current AMD RX series, not the ancient nvidia cards.

Having had a 2nd look, the Amazon linked one is different part than the BT one, and looking up the BT one on Asus' web site does indeed show it doesn't need a power connector, so it does meet it on that basis. I will have to consider further if the price/performance is worth it.

Because I can afford it, doesn't mean I should get it. Is it 135/80x better than a 750Ti? I will have to work that out another time. Then there's the 1060 3GB, I'm guessing that'll be over power budget, but maybe a 1050 will come along before I need to buy.

Hmm... it looks like the £80 750Ti I saw previously aren't around any more.

Predicting the compute performance by number of cuda cores and reference boost clocks, a 950 is about 31% faster than a 750Ti. Taking a 950 to be £135, the 750Ti would have to be £102 for comparable price/performance ratio. Guess what? That's the typical ball park price they're going for. Of course I haven't proven they scale like this, and when I'm home later it would be an interesting exercise to try this out on more models in nvidia range and see how they stack up.

Granted they are older cards, but I run gtx 680s paired with gt640s.

Any open shrouds may pose a challenge if case ventilation isn't good.

The answer to a question no-one asked is as follows: GTX970 offers best compute price:performance ratio based on best in-stock pricing from two UK retailers (not including postage), assuming reference boost clock.

Following numbers are £/TFLOP (lower is better) for selected nvidia cards, and the number in brackets afterwards is the street price I used in the calculation:
49.7 GTX 970 (£195)
52.6 GTX 1060 (£230)
57.9 GTX 1070 (£374)
58.0 GTX 960 (£140)
59.3 GTX 980 Ti (£359)
66.5 GTX 1080 (£590)
67.0 GTX 750 Ti (£93)
67.4 GTX 950 (£123)
76.3 GTX 980 (£380)
100 Titan XP (£1099)

Of course, this rating will depend on the pricing at the time so things can change if there is a sale on for example.

For a measure that doesn't depend on price, following is TDP/TFLOP (lower is better):
20.3 1080
22.8 Titan XP
23.2 1070
27.4 1060
33.1 980
37.0 970
37.4 Titan X (Maxwell)
41.3 980 Ti
43.2 750 Ti
49.3 950
49.7 960

Clearly Pascal is the place to be for power efficiency, which should be no surprise. If you want to balance power, performance and price, it looks like 1070 is about the sweet spot. There may be some variation depending on how manufactures balance boost clocks and power usage, as they're likely optimised more for gaming where power usage doesn't impact so much in reviews.

And before anyone points out I started this thread for Polaris, I know.

Some results for GFN19, and comparison to some of my other cards:

Time to completion (current "live" units from today)

Rx 480 6903 seconds (Win10)
GTX 980 10649 (2 units simultaneously, so halve that for average) (OSX)
GTX 770 9493 (OSX)
GTX 680 9247 (OSX)
GT 640 38675 (OSX)
GT 640 33220 (Win10)
R9 290x 6671 (Win10)

For whatever reason, on OSX, I have to run 2 units on the higher end nvidia cards to keep the gpu pegged. Normally I'd do that with the 680s as well, but not during the summertime.

At best the Rx 480 gets withing spitting distance of a 290x.

Given the power draw, I wonder if/when we'll see dual gpu card version. That might be interesting.

And before anyone points out I started this thread for Polaris, I know.

Hijacker!

In all seriousness, given that double-precision is no longer necessary for most of the GFN tasks, and how good the Maxwell (and presumably higher) cards handle ocl3/ocl4, I would have to say nvidia is they way to go, if only prices would come down.

If the 10x0 prices would drop, perhaps it would put pressure on the used market for 9x0 cards...

So I am going to get a 1070 at some point. Just have convince my wife to allow me to get it. I'd have already gotten one but I am not the boss.

Gosh, everything that comes to my house is "for work"....

288larsson got himself a 1080. I would be curious what percentage of GFN19 units are done between the two of us. In any event, I see a number of head-to-head units, where his 1080 is taking about 3950 seconds per unit, and my rx 480 is taking 6930.

Purchase price, I probably have the price/performance edge. Electric draw/performance, he almost surely does.
