In going to ebay to leave feedback for something else, I just bid on an X99 mobo... ends shortly and no one else has bid, starting price low, but believably so. Seller has no history/feedback.

Having thought about it a bit more, maybe I do want to loose! It's a lga2011-3 mobo so isn't going to take the bargain Xeons, and what few CPUs that fits in the socket don't come cheap!

Nice try, you almost got me to go to ebay and check it out. Tax season has me swearing off ebay for a while.

I do have a couple of slots for gpus remaining, though. Hmmm......

£2000 might sound like a lot, but you get 8 of the Xeon E5-2670, in pairs in 4 nodes, or £500 per node. Given a new mobo would be £250, plus a pair of Xeons are £150, at a price per node this isn't bad. I have to wonder what the PSU is like on those, could the nodes be split? I don't want to take over 1kW in a single box, unless I can hide it in a rack at work... :)

A single node would be fun to play with but I'm not sure the rest could be split for resale.

Ask the seller if you can take it for a test drive over the weekend prior to making a final commitment. That should be enough to flip each of your badges to the next level. :-P

Edit: The comment about hiding it at work is priceless!

Is my math correct in that is 64 cores? Nice.

The tdp on each of those xeons is 115 watts. That's going to generate some heat/noise. I have one machine that pulls 920w under load. which isn't _too_ bad, although it can pretty much be the only machine in a room not a data center.

2 pcie slots-I wonder if their is enough airflow to support the fanless gpgpu modules?

Hey-it supports rambus! Something else to throw in the benchmark mix.

Are you sure the 256g of ram will be enough :)

It actually looks like a pretty darn good deal. How much would you have to spend in one-off systems to get that horsepower (and where would you put them)?

If you take my current 7 desktop crunchers and add up only the CPU, ram, mobo (no cooling, HD, case, PSU, nothing) then I estimate it would cost about £2300 today, so I've already spent more than that. Note I didn't optimise all of them for crunching so components would cost more than necessary. But what about performance?

It would get tricky to estimate accurately, so I'm making the big assumption nothing is ram limited. My current systems total about 80 GHz of Skylake cores equivalent. Even without FMA, that Xeon server would be 97 GHz equivalent. The Xeon is less likely to be ram bandwidth limited than my current systems. If you were to express it as a quad core Skylake equivalent with dual channel ram, it would be a 3 GHz CPU with 3200 ram on it. That's plenty. So in terms of up front cost and performance, that server would win.

I wonder what value that would offer for crunching? I know nothing about modern AMD mobo compatibility, etc.

If you use the pull-down menu at the bottom to scroll through the pages, it comes with a CoolerMaster heatsink and fan (or at least fan), and the price? US$125 apparently, so under a hundred quid? Am I missing something?

I suppose it lacks proper AVX (i.e. for PG), does it? And no FMA3. Hm, I suppose that takes the fun of the low price out of it.

For LLR-like tasks AMD CPUs are currently roughly 1/4 to 1/3 the performance per core per clock of a modern Intel (Haswell+). So... forget it. They do have some instructions but were found not to actually provide any performance boost over not using them. This makes it look like a tick box item to say they support it, but doesn't mean it will actually be useful.

They might be interesting for CPU sieve if that's of any interest, but I don't have numbers for that. Perhaps do the "slow" transform GFN CPU tasks as they wont be disadvantaged.

Nah I'm not really interested in going down the AMD route at all, I just thought it might be of interest to someone - if they could use the GPU cores on there plus a couple of graphics cards in a system, it might make a good GPU-only system, or something like that.

I think if you don't already own a current AMD system, it isn't something to consider right now. Zen is around the corner and they might not suck. That's not so say they don't have applications elsewhere, but for LLR it isn't ideal. I'd rather have an i3.

Does the UK have 240v power lines?

I think all of Europe is 220-240v.

Edit: Probably easier to ask who does not have 220-240v .... the US and Canada come to mind.

Yes I think only North America uses 110v, though there may be some exceptions.
Fortunately a lot of the electronic equipment you've bought recently is happy with either 110 or 220, and either 50Hz or 60Hz. Be sure to check first. Worst problem is the plug/socket pin configuration, so I always tote along my little bag of adapters.

Now, if I could just get a single battery charger that will work with my laptop, phone, camera, shaver, et cetera, then I'd be in electrical nirvana (except for the huge mess of remote controls in my living room).

Ouch, they have six of them.

To try and stave off any temptation, I fired off an informal e-mail to IT at work to see if they have any old kit they're retiring. Only saw it got put into the formal ticket system... oh well, at least any response will be formal then.

Work IT have given me the blessing to raid the recycling pile. There were 3 Dells which were way too old (DDR2 era) and one HP which was at least DDR3. The CPU doesn't have AVX though, so maybe equivalent to 1st gen i7 series? I'm wondering if they left the ram in that and if so if it might be worth keeping around. It is buried a bit deep though so not sure it is worth the effort of excavating it.

Elsewhere, I spotted an i3-4360 on ebay so snapped it up. 3.7 GHz and 4MB cache, should help the upcoming MEGA challenge over the 3MB models. Why not Skylake i3? This is a bit convoluted. There is a cheap Z97 board in the UK, and I figured I'd get that and put the i5 in it along with 2400 ram. That should lift the i5 performance up a fair bit. But, then I'd have a spare mobo and ram left over... just add CPU for another system, where I'll also risk one of those ultra-cheap cases with PSUs included... see how bad they really are. System will be low power drain anyway.

Oh, still looking at those 8x8 Xeon servers on ebay... 2 gone, 4 left!

Message 95345 - Posted: 28 May 2016 | 8:54:23 UTC - in response to Message 95337.

Just put in the other for the other parts. Now, something I didn't do BEFORE this was work out if the Haswell double upgrade works out more cost effective than the new Skylake build option.

To recap, I have ordered:
Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H (£50) - cheapest Z97 mobo by some margin
i3-4360 (£75 ebay)
Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400 2x8GB (£57)- overkill on the ram, but I wanted to be more confident it'll be dual rank as I suspect the 2x4GB kit wont be, and 2x8 is a fair bit cheaper than 4x4.
Deepcool Gammaxx 200T cooler (£10) - not essential but I like something better than stock cooler
AvP Atomic Slim Case + 500W PSU (£23)

Total spend: £215

What performance will that give me over what I have now? Note I will be shuffling parts around as a result of this purchase, but the new i3-4360 build would give about 5.5 GHz (Skylake equivalent) for big prime power. But I'll also be enhancing the i5-4570S I already have. I know that runs 3.2 GHz 4 cores active, but it is hindered by the 1600 ram in it, at an estimated 60% of potential. Swapping it to 2400 ram raises it to about 85% potential. That's an increase from roughly 6.7 to 9.5 GHz (Skylake equivalent), or almost 3 GHz worth. That's about a core. Roughly speaking, the total improvement would be around 8.3 GHz equivalent.

Previously I did a hypothetical build based around an i3-6100. If I go like-for-like, using current pcpartpicker pricing (try saying that quickly!) we get find:
CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor (£95.17 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: ASRock ASRock H110M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£41.06 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (£24.23 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £160.46
To keep it comparable let's also add the cooler and case+psu from before, so that's an extra 33 bringing the total to about £193. Factoring in large prime efficiency that works out at 6.7 GHz worth.

So more by luck than planning it, it does seem like the system upgrade was not a bad choice, although there is little in it as I pay a bit more, and I get a bit more.

Ok, that's my morning fun sorted. Half the fun of a new build is working it out, the other half is doing it, which might be a week or so away as I picked the free delivery.

Work IT have given me the blessing to raid the recycling pile.

Take EVERYTHING of any worth. Then, sort it all out at home (and get the hoover ready for afterwards :) ) and decide what, if anything, is worth the noise/heat/electricity bill - also seeing if any spare parts can upgrade the complete but slooow PCs. Then, take the rest to your local Cash Converters or whatever other shop which rips you off completely, just to see how much you can get for them. Then, even if you can only get £20 or whatever in total, see if you can eBay any old cheap components which will upgrade what you've kept, even if only slightly.

Or would practically emptying the recycle bin into the boot of your car be taking the wee-wee out of work too much? If not then it will be a wild and wacky adventure.

The stuff in the pile is mostly too old. Only one HP server is borderline interesting but still a generation too old for effective prime hunting. As for recovering value, it isn't worth the time. I've asked for them to let me know when they have more kit to go and next generation would likely be a lot more interesting.

After further research, I think I will try extracting the HP server. It is 1st gen i7 so not too bad if I keep away from AVX supporting tasks. Don't know what configuration it is in or if it is still populated at all. I'd expect the disks will be separately destroyed but if the CPU and ram is intact it could be a bit of dual-CPU fun in the short term.

Just had a look inside the server... wont be having it after all. There's no ram inside it, and only one CPU assumed populated as there's a single heatsink. I did find it curious there were two SAS drives left inside. Again, I thought it would have been separately disposed of. I've kept hold of them for now and will see if I have anything mechanically compatible with it at home. Of course, their operation state is unknown so I don't want to pay for an adapter unless absolutely needed.

Gonna put the SAS drives back in the recycling pile I think. I got it confused with variations of SATA and I don't think I have anything that will connect to it at home. There are mechanical adapters but they still appear to rely on support of the host to talk to SAS.

Unless... I just heard today we're due the annual bonus "soon". It would cover that server I'm not looking at almost every day...

It both is and isn't a bonus, in the sense it is factored into my contract and there is a "nominal" expected amount, but it will vary depending on overall company performance. The last year's financials were pretty bad so it was funded at less than 50% nominal. Still, I treat it like a bonus in that I don't expect it, and it is a nice extra when it does arrive.

Elsewhere: got the i3-4360 today. Putting it in i5-4570S system. Thought I'd do some temperature comparisons.

i5-4570S, 65W TDP, was touching 60C on Prime95 small stress test.
i3-4360, 54W TDP, touching 75C on same test. Why? Oh, when swapping the CPU I also gave the heatsink a good dusting.

In recent tiding up I unearthed a stash of intel stock coolers. Two of them had copper cores, some didn't. Let's try one of those instead of the bigger coolermaster? i3 now touching 95C. Ok, back to the coolermaster it is! But still, didn't expect the i3 to get hotter than the i5 with dust blocked fan.

Got the new mobo running with a little tinkering required. Prime95 benchmark results for 1M-4M FFTs gave on average about 21% improvement in throughput. As that's on 4 cores, that's about 84% of a core worth which is 2.7 GHz of CPU performance. Not quite another core, but close. My earlier prediction put the benefit at 2.8 GHz worth, not bad! I can't remember if I was expressing that as Haswell GHz or Skylake GHz so it might be less accurate, but the efficiency % were very roughly estimated anyway.

The ram is ridiculous... I'm stability testing running it at 2800 at the moment. DDR3. At 2800. It even booted at 2933 and I ran out of multipliers for 3000. 2933 benched slightly lower than 2800 hence I'm stabilising 2800. Passed 20 minutes of prime95 so far...

Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400 2x8GB (£57)- overkill on the ram, but I wanted to be more confident it'll be dual rank as I suspect the 2x4GB kit wont be, and

Right - this isn't questioning your phraseology, knowledge, or anything else, this is for me. When we are talking about dual-rank, I don't think I've understood exactly what you mean.

To me, 2x4GB = two physical sticks of RAM, each having a capacity of 4GB. So that's what I thought "dual rank" meant - two physical sticks, to occupy two of the RAM slots, the preferable configuration of which is detailed by the colour of the mobo's RAM slots, and on about page 2 of the instruction booklet, even if it has about 200 pages like premium ASUS mobo booklets do.

As I understand it, technically people can buy one stick and it'll operate in "dual channel" mode, but of course with a massive penalty, i.e. so massive that it might as well not be operating in dual-channel mode.

So if that (ignoring the tangent of the previous paragraph about modern one-stick systems) isn't dual-rank, what is? Surely if something is described as 2x4GB, it's a guarantee of having two sticks. So sorry if I'm having a thick moment, but I can't think of anything else which could further qualify something as "dual-rank"?

I bet I'm being thick, sorry.

Message 95477 - Posted: 4 Jun 2016 | 8:52:27 UTC - in response to Message 95471.

It is a confusing topic and I'm still not sure I fully understand the details myself. Channels is easy. One stick = one channel. Two sticks in the correct sockets on the mobo = dual channel. The CPU can access them in parallel so you get a doubling in transfers. It has to be the right sockets because with 4 sockets in a dual channel mobo, you could end up putting them on the same channel for example and you don't get that benefit.

Rank is more of a tricky concept to describe. It is something to do with the internal structure of the module itself. For whatever reason, I found that dual rank modules gave much better (like 10's of %) compared to single rank ones at the same speed and timings. As such for memory bandwidth limited cases (pretty much all consumer quad cores) I want to try and provide as much ram speed as possible.

There is an unofficial and technically incorrect way to check the rank visually, which is to see if the module has memory chips on both sides of the PCB or not. Spec sheets unfortunately rarely say what the rank structure is. If you have the module, there is also software that reports the rank structure (e.g. thaiphoon burner).

I think as a rule of thumb, modern 4GB modules will be most likely single rank now. Really old ones, like 4 or 5 year old ones, might be dual rank as I have a couple kits like that myself, although at much slower speeds. 8 GB modules thus have a higher chance but still not 100%. In DDR4 the latest fast 8GB modules seem to be moving towards single rank.

Actually, rank doesn't have to be in a single module. If the mobo has 4 slots, you can populate it with 4x single rank modules and still get dual rank per channel, and the higher performance. I went with 2x8 as it was much cheaper than 4x4.

Hmm... this is weird. I just worked out the timing for the units completed overnight, and the median unit was taking the same amount of time at 2800 as 2400 (to within 1%). But the mean was actually 3% slower. I did leave aida64 monitoring in the background so wonder if that might be slowing things down. I've stopped it for now and will do more units to see if that affects performance. Prime95 benchmark at 4M FFT was a few % faster though.

Part of the problem seemed to be the Intel GPU driver just wasn't installing. I tried various things including DDU and gave up by throwing in an old nvidia card instead. Success. Now I have a new problem. It is no longer stable at 2800 settings I was using before. Maybe the problem was holding it back enough to make it not a problem? I'm going to take a break from overclocking the ram for now and bench 2400 and see if that has improved from adding the GPU.

I might have just bought an E5 2683 V3 for £170. 14 cores at 2 GHz base, Haswell era. Raw throughput would be roughly equivalent to a 6 core Skylake at 4 GHz.

Now to see if I'm insane enough go dual socket and try and source another one. The one I got was from UK, similar priced ones can be found from Hong Kong. I haven't looked seriously at mobos yet but it is LGA 2011-3 so should be easier than looking for ones for the older xeons.

I would guess that using the integrated GPU would cause a massive overheating problem? If we're talking physical area, using all CPU cores would probably only heat about 40% of the CPU, but using even the GPU alone would use the other 60%? So considering that some CPU usage is inevitable, whatever you do, the whole thing is going to get much hotter.

I think I installed these in order to do some lower Genefers on my Haswell GPU, but it was absolutely rubbish, so I've not bothered beyond experimenting.

I have no interest in crunching on Intel GPU, but just wanted the drivers so the display was working correctly. I don't know why Windows seemed intent on sticking to the Standard VGA driver.

Hmm... new toy might be a handful as I'm running out of spare GPUs to add, and I'm pretty sure Xeons don't come with one.

Agreed. I'd put it on GFN20 and forget about it. I recently switched from that to Woodall after getting my blue GFN badge, and in the first round, none of them verified, they took about 1.5% of the time, for about half the credit. I'm not a total credit-hunter (spoonerise that or rhyme it with what you like...) but basically, I've switched back to GFN20 with my CPU. I would love to hit a Woodall prime, though, it's a rare occurence. Since Michael took over from John, GFN has really been the "promoted" project, and I'm not really 100% happy with it. Helping to solve a conjecture in my lifetime would be the best goal. It'll probably happen, just imagine how Intel's FPUs will perform in 30 years' time. We'll be doing SoB WUs in a few hours.

I haven't done a cost-benefit analysis on it yet, but the Xeon I went for will age a bit better than the bargain basement E5-2670 that everyone is buzzing over. Each core isn't that fast, so that in itself isn't so great, but it will do so many...

Forgot to say, in the end I decided to go single socket after all. Most things would double up for dual socket, so this will be plenty to play with regardless.

Well it sounds like you know exactly what you're doing, i.e. RAM is pretty much the only variable. Not that I ever thought you didn't know what you were doing, of course, AtP members usually know exactly what they are doing :)

When was the last time we had an invalid WU in a challenge? I might have produced 4 last year at some point, when I was cat-sitting for my parents who were on holiday, and I had to go over there twice a day. Out of boredom, I kicked my dad's PC into action, which was built by me, but the Sandy Bridge CPU under water cooling (which he loves) has obviously mis-fired one too many times, because it never produced a valid result. I did overclock it 24/7 at 4.8GHz, for about a year before he inherited it; don't tell him that though, please.

PG needs to get Android crunching, pretty quickly. In November I'll have 6 Android cores sitting in a drawer and doing nothing, and I expect a lot of other people will have too.

I had a bad cullen during the challenge. The PC had 4 sticks of mixed ram in it and I guess it wasn't quite 100%.

I'm not so fussed about android. They are still a lot slower than desktop. I run one phone on seti and einstein, and it hardly makes any credit worth talking about. When I used to run WCG on it too, that at least added up to the time-based badges they awarded.

I'm not fussed about it either, and possibly for temperature conditions alone, they should only be used as cool, plugged-in crunchers. But like I said, when I get a new phone in November, I'll have a Sony Xperia T and Z2 sitting in a drawer, doing nothing. They might as well be doing something. I'm not going to bother with non-PG stuff, though. That's due to my laziness.

I've always said there is massive untapped potential with these devices, but you'd hardly get anywhere near close to useful penetration plus people won't be able to manage the temperature issues.

My verrrrry old Xperia T was half-useful at doing the TRP Sieve, before it was proven that the sieve software was broken. Assuming that it would go at roughly the same speed if it was not broken, then spare Android devices could add up to a very productive tool. I think there were about 150 people trying it out, when the TRP Sieve was in beta status and only semi-privately discussed. Android has advanced hugely since then, too, if I remember correctly, that was on Jelly Bean.

Done some comparisons of the E5-2683v3 and E5-2670, throwing in i7-6700k for good measure. Looking purely at LLR prime finding throughput, the 2683v3 give 28 Haswell GHz, compared to a shade under 14 GHz effective for a single 2570 due to lack of FMA. Stock 6700k is 18 GHz worth. Now, I paid £180 for the 2683v3, which is about 3x the going rate compared to the 2570, but I don't think this is so significant considering finding cheap mobos for either is near impossible. I went for an ebay "new" Asrock single socket for £150 in the end. Duals would be £300 ball park, and I'd need extra ram too... that was a bit much. New dual socket boards for the older Xeon were £250+ when I looked, and used single socket x79 was still £150 ball park.

What about ram efficiency? Following numbers are ram GB/s per Skylake equivalent core, since this is what my earlier chart was plotted in. Higher is better.
2683v3 2.8
2570 4.2
6700k 2.1 stock 4.0 GHz and 2133 ram
6700k 3.0 CPU oc 4.2, 3200 ram (my fast desktop configuration)

On that scale, 4.0 is about 90% performance relative to practically unlimited ram, and 3.0 is about 80%. It isn't a linear scale and drops more sharply below that.

So basically, the old 2570 has plenty of bandwidth due to its relatively low performance. The 2683v3 will lose a bit of performance due to ram limitations, it might be interesting to reserve a core or two for GPU here. I'll obviously do more intensive benchmarking when I get it. It is going to be a killer data set...

Forgot to say, the 2683v3 ends up being about double the performance per watt relative to 2570. Ouch.

Setting up the Xeon now... ironically the best spare heatsink I have I think is from an AMD CPU of X2 era. It is held in place by gravity and thermal compound. It is surprising how slippery the stuff is when hot, and I had to use a bag of SATA cables to pad it so it doesn't slide off. I hope the real cooler arrives soon.

Haven't really stressed it yet, but initial impression suggests it might run 2.3 GHz all cores active. No ram OC though, so it will be a bit limited there. I'm going to hate calculating the optimal running configurations.

I did my first prime units on it now, PPS. Easily fits in the processor cache so no ram limitations. The Xeon @ 2.3 GHz did units averaging 36.25 minutes each (x14) for 23 units per hour. My desktop 6700k @ 4.2 GHz does them in 18.5 minutes (x4) for 13 units per hour. Not quite double the throughput, but close! The Xeon + mobo costs less than the 6700k + mobo did too (cheaper Skylakes are available).

That's on the to do list. I have a meter ready, but was going to move the board into a case first before further testing. I don't know how accurate it is, but the CPU built in power monitor was showing 90W running small FFT units. Lower than the 120W TDP, but that might be something to do with the below-expectation turbo speed as it is supposed to get to all-core 2.5 GHz, and I've not managed it get it above 2.3 GHz yet.

I have also found TDP to be on the high side for my i3 6300 ... it is consuming around 38 W and in spite of the advertised 51 W.

Edit: It seems we are both 25% below TDP.

My CPU seems to be hitting some internal restriction and I haven't found a way past it yet. When I hit similar with a 6700k relaxing current limit did it, but this trick isn't working on the Xeon.

For fun I'm playing a little with tightening timings on the ram. I'm running 3333 at 2133 because there is no OC. So can I pull in the latency at 2133?

Also have this chart. I did Prime95 28.7 benchmark for 64k to 8192k FFT for 1 to 14 workers. That took a while as you can imagine. After normalising for FFT workload, and scaling to show it relative to FFT working size, I got this chart. I wanted to have separate lines for each FFT size, but Excel would want me to add it by hand separately. There isn't enough time in the universe to do that, so instead I just lumped it as a single data set. The interesting thing here is we see a drop in performance at around 35MB as would be expected when the CPU cache is exceeded, but note not all combinations drop! Some of them remain relatively high performance even at high FFT sizes that should not fit in the cache any more. I would speculate that for very large FFT sizes, it doesn't have to do it in one go as it were. This may also explain why my previous modelling seemed a bit pessimistic under higher loads. Maybe the effect is more visible as relative cache availability increases. Still learning.

Oh, system power at idle around 80W, going up to 160W running PPS or PPSE. There is a 280X in there which takes about 30W even when doing nothing.

Edit: I've not been back to the nest like quackerel has in order to count all the eggs, this was an edit lefft in process. But I know that you can't take the TDP as any kind of guide, at all, unless perhaps comparing different iterations of the same architecture... which seems unlikely to ever happen again, even from Intel.

I'm not sure that this is the issue here, but these days, watts can legally be stated as several things; including heat-watts, and suction-watts (which Dyson and the like tend to state). There was a discussion on the board about it which didn't even touch upon that, a while ago, which clarified that CPU developers quoted "Thermal DESIGN POINT, not design power, which some people confuse(d) with thermal designated power use, or thermal maximum operating temperature, or whatever else. Basically the term "Watt" (oh James, you are a card!) can be misinterpreted, and even if you and the CPU manufacturer are talking about the same thing, their "design" power is meaningless if you're doing anything other than using it in exactly the same conditions as they were when they did their press release. Which is implausible, because their figures will be averaged anyway. Couple those 4 things together, and you get spaghetti hoops.

Same thing applies for Intel too, mind. But far too many variables to criticise either company.

Who's going to buy a 9960X and 2x13990Tis? How much value will it be?

Let's all just calm down. Let's not worry about the bridge rectifiers on that all-zirconium PSU just yet.

Ebuyer's daily specials includes a Dell tower server with Haswell Xeon, 3.2 base 3.6 turbo, 4 cores, 8MB cache, no HT. Sounds like an LLR box to me, for under £200 after awkward cashback. Downside is it comes with 4GB ECC ram, presumably one stick and getting a 2nd genuine one is £50. Gonna have a bit of a think on this one.

Its got the same e3-1225v3 that my ts440s have. For performance, that processor packs a whole lot of meh. I have been disappointed in them. And you're right, ecc memory is expensive.

290w power supply means no significant gpus (even if it could fit them, and my lenovos can't fit anywhere close to a full length card due to poor/annoying placement of various connecters on the motherboard).

Crunching on 3/4 cores for the cullen challenge they were taking about 140-142000 seconds per unit.

Crunching 1/2 cores on my i3-4130 was taking about 112000 seconds.

Crunching 3/4 cores on my i7-3615qm (yes a mobile processor in a mac mini) was taking 165000. About 14% better than an ivy brdge mac mini...

You'll probably get better throughput with a barebones i3-6100 setup, and probably cheaper too.

I know it is going to be ram bandwidth starved for bigger tasks... same problem I had with i5-4570S and only partially negated by moving to a mobo with 2400 ram. But no faster ram here. But the way I look at it is, it is quad core for dual core money.

Still, with the pain of cashback, I think I have gone off it now.

The i3-6xxx might end up better overall for large tasks, although I don't think there would be much in the cost between them as you'd still have to go low end to get the build in that budget.

If only the prices of decent processors would come down. I still love the idea of building around a 5820k with quad channel memory. It looks like asrock is supporting 3400 on their x99 boards. One core per ram channel, with 2 cores left to feed gpus (the downside of the i3).

Given the initial reviews of the skylake many-core i7s, I'm not sure prices will be dropping any time soon.

If I ever get brave enough to go the sample route, there's always something like:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2667-V3-ES-2-9Ghz-35MB-8-Core-LGA2011-3-22nm-135W-Processor-CPU-/351714630118?hash=item51e3d359e6:g:E78AAOxyCepScNeQ

Or, for stupid overkill (although the 50 meg cache looks inviting, but motherboard selection looks limited)

On the shorter pps-mega tasks, my e3-1225v3 not running boinc virtualized is taking around 3760 seconds per task, crunching 3/4 and running a gpu gfn unit.

The aforementioned i7 mac mini is taking 6000 seconds running 4/4.

Ordered parts for a mini-ITX build which hopefully arrives tomorrow. This will be my VR box, I think the stock 980Ti will fit in it, and will reuse a 6700k and ram from existing system to help keep costs down. When things get cooler I'll backfill the spare mobo.

Ordered a 970 too. For now I've relocated the 980Ti into the VR test box and my main system is running intel integrated... 970 seems the best value point still, cheaper than 480, and it'll hold me over until Gigabyte's tiny 1070 is in the wild.

Because of this, I've moved parts around. The 6600k goes into the "good" mobo system, and I'm testing the OC on that, currently running 4.2 GHz at 1.23v. 1.20v wasn't Prime95 stable. The 6600k in the "bad" mobo gave some bad WUs, so by moving it over to the "good" mobo I hope it will prove if it is the mobo or the components.

I might have just ordered a 1070. It took a while for me to debate when to bite, and stock availability and pricing seems to be settling a bit in UK. I got a FE for just under £400. The FE might seem an odd choice, but it is going in my VR mini-ITX box and 1, there is no room for anything bigger, and 2, a blower is better as it pushes the hot air out of the case, not into it. Hope to get that later this week (free, slow delivery).

The 980Ti can then be returned to my main rig, and I'll move the 970 into a cruncher. Or I could even leave it in my main rig as a cruncher, without interrupting my desktop/gaming usage of the 980Ti. It is still too hot to talk about crunching right now.

Back on the VR rig, I chose the wrong version of the case. Colour options aside, it comes either with a mesh or solid front. I chose the latter as it looks much nicer, but I now found it restricts the airflow too much to the radiator and the fan is rather noisy. Taking the panel off helps a lot. Think I'll just have to rebuy the case in mesh version and hope having yet another empty case spare wont tempt me to fill it later...

If I had a Z170 mobo...

Erm, and a compatible CPU, although my 4790K seems to be holding up fairly well. We always want the latest thing, though, don't we? We're like housewives scrubbing our doorsteps white after the first world war. That is [b]exactly[//b] what we are all like.

As much as LLR tasks benefit from fast memory, I've had my share of compatibility problems with high speed kits I wouldn't buy anything much above 3000, maybe 3200.

The above VR rig, I moved the CPU and ram from an existing setup so I know they're fine together. The only change was the mobo. Can't boot at 3000 where it was fine before. In further searching, the short version was only expect to hit the higher speeds reliably with higher end mobos.

I placed myself on the B&H notification list for the MSI GTX 1060 card ... I have found it in Europe for 279 euro and which is something I can live with.

Just treated myself to some more bits, now that we know more about Kaby Lake it doesn't seem worth waiting for, and I've got an i3-6100 coming to fit inside a spare mobo from a system I previously raided for bits.

I also needed some ram, and after a bit of thought ordered 4x4GB 2133 C13 to go into the Xeon box, which frees up the 4x4 3333 to return to a 6600k system. The ram that was in the 6600k system will go into the 6100 system. Confused yet?

I'm just putting the settings back into the 6600k system and making sure that runs ok. A mild overclock to 4.2 GHz and rotate heatsink 90 degrees due to it interfering with the extra ram sticks. I also got another case fan on order since it has space for one... bad reason?

The Xeon ram can't be overclocked, but I do hope it can be latency reduced. While not as good as faster ram, it could still have a small benefit. It is cheap ram anyway, the same cost as C15 so nothing lost even it if doesn't go tighter.

I did manage to resist a 1060 3GB to throw into it, given that it wont be cool enough to run one for at least another month or so. Let's see if prices drop by then. Maybe even enough to consider the 6GB.

Meh. Place I ordered from hasn't dispatched as they say their warehouse has been unexpectedly busy. As such, I'm not going to get the i3 built in time for the start of the challenge. Still a good chance for Friday so maybe I can get a late start, but it will literally be built it and run it without other testing!
