We've done this before but of course being old I've forgotten. I always find it interesting to hear what caused you to join AtP if you care to share.
I was just a baby hog and Tim was a mother Rat way back when. So when he asked if I'd like to become a rat I was happy to join. He'd also helped me out on several newbie questions and of course his wit and humor (cough). So I now I'm a rat loving hog and have never looked back.
In looking over our team mates, it strikes me that we are made up of a very special set of folks who are both smart and witty.
It makes me proud to be a member of this team and to be associated with everyone here.
Cheers Rick |

I got an email seemingly out of the blue (though there must have been a trigger on another subforum) when I was staying at a hotel exploring a particular town which I needed up living very near to due to a particular set of business circumstances.
Such is life.
Good push this Yuletide, with the new members, hopefully keeping our collective furry noses above the 10mlln RAC barrier! |

I accidentally clicked on a link in a spam email regarding my winnings in a Nigerian lottery.
No, no, that was something else.... actually I had done some testing for Iain for Mac PG software, and during a subsequent challenge, he suggested in a PM that I join. So here I am.

I joined after getting a little bit bored with PG - I wanted to see what competing in one of the challenges was like, as part of a team. I liked everyone instantly and never looked back, aside from wishing I'd joined straight away. Why did I pick AtP? I'd seen a lot of members being helpful and funny on the boards, so I thought it would be a very good bet. |

About 3.25 years ago; TheDawgz got here after writing really bad limericks about rats and cows -
For primes searched the Herd and the Horde
First the Rats then the Cows made the board
TheDawgz not competing
On scores one eye keeping
A new Woodall the final reward
and then they got stranger ...
To humans it may seem rather funny,
TheDawgz would be eating dust bunnies.
With no thumbs to hold forks,
we use snuffles and snorts.
No matter the color they're yummy!
and stranger still (after we asked Tim if TheDawgz could join the Rats) ...
To pass up the dust bunnies for Rats,
and go dodging Cow pies that make splats.
Oh Rats are so clever,
not boring not ever.
So we'll play with the Rats and that's that.
To which Tim said "OK - I guess" (TheDawgz have since learned he had his fingers crossed)
With an invite TheDawgz came to play,
only to find the Rats ran away.
BFFs we've two Hawgz,
always there for TheDawgz.
So TheDawgz with TheHawgz play today.

@TheDawgz - I'd completely forgotten the limericks! Those were great. We need to bring them back. But I do remember your commenting on our cow friends at the time.

Hmm. Dont really have anything clever to say about it...
Played with PG for a bit a while back and just joined a random team. Lost interest pretty quick.
For some odd reason I got to thinkin about it again and realized how cool it would be to find a big prime :) So here I am.
As far as choosing AtP I actually just started going through the list of teams and looked for a team that had a decent number of active members and a community where I thought I would be able to get help if I needed it. |

Sheesh. You found a team where plenty of the members need help.
Usually some one can in fact help and the thrill of the first top 5000 will long live with you. So far as I know your best bet for finding a top 5000 prime is running PPS or SGS but if you want long lasting fame then other projects are better. |

A top 5000 would be pretty swell.... But tell me more about this 'long lasting fame' :)

There are primes and primes and the list is dynamic in that it new primes are added to it every day. A prime I found back in May 2009 with about 136000 digits was then the 3415th largest prime known. Larger primes were found and by September 2009 it was no longer one of the top 5000. Currently to get on the list you need about 362000 digits. So a really big prime will stay on the list for longer (although all primes which were once on the list are archived). The 20 largest primes of each of various types are kept irrespective of whether they are on the main list. Certain types of primes might prove or disprove conjectures and finding one of those would be neat.
Some people like to chase after badges and/or credit rather than especially after primes. If you go along those lines you'll have a different strategy.
Famously AtP don't care what you do. We'd like you to have fun. If you'd like to join in the general banter and thread hijacking which usually goes on here we'd certainly like that. If you don't want to do so that is also fine. I have some stuff going on in real life which means I am not lowering the tone as much as usual. Fire away with technical questions either simple or complex. We should be able to help out.

Generally speaking, the larger the number, the less likely it is to be prime (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_number_theorem). Thus, larger primes are rarer, and therefore more 'special'. Of course what is considered 'large' now, will become the norm sooner or later. However, getting high up in the top5k would mean you'd stay there a very long time. Primes from PPSE or SGS will typically only stay on the list for maybe a year till they are bumped off by newer, larger primes.
If you take a look at the front page, you'll find a list of all the sub projects and the rank where a prime would enter on the top5k. Since there are an infinite number of primes, undying glory is hard(!), but finding a megaprime (> 1 million digits) would go into position 108 or higher, and should stay on the list for years.
Even better IMHO is to find a prime in the TRP, ESP, PSP or SoB sub-projects. In each of these there are a certain set of primes that need to be found (one for each value of k remaining), which if found, prove a particular mathematical conjecture. Since once a theorem is proven, if will remain proven for ever, finding one of these primes will put you down in history. For explanation about these projects (and a list of previous prime finders) check http://www.prothsearch.com/rieselprob.html and http://www.prothsearch.com/sierp.html.
Cheers

I joined AtP because of the team name... It was so off the wall that I even researched it on google to figure out what it meant... To this day, I still don't know what it means... I know our original founder has a thing for rats and mice though... and I think he has a rat named Erin... which is my sister's name...
I never ever jump on the #1 team bandwagon. Would rather see a team come up the ranks as Aggie has done..
Plus, I think I was recruited by Rick.

I dont know how I become RAT, but I do know that I am proud to be part of this team.
If you ask why I will write you few simple facts.
In my whole life on the Net ( about 20 years) I never be part of team who has so different peoples put in one team , together.
I must admire one thing to Tim: he is like a glue: looking at people, find matching ones, and with glue ( his humor, at first place but also with his fairness and justice) put together one team, compact one.
Few peoples become members but also leave same day or next day.
So Tim holds our team clean. It is also very important thing . Without that we will be long time ago broke apart.
Third thing: you all know that English is not my language. I never sense that it is something that stays between me and rest of us. And as member of team it is very important to me.
I also start my own way to find mega prime near 1,5 year ago, and I am less active as before, but regularly post pictures in my thread, and look at board every day few times.
Why: because you are best RATS in the world!
And as I say before, and will write it again: I am proud to be member of this team!
Only I can wish is that this team follow current path and stay compact!

About 10 years ago I acquired 3 rats. Their parents were quite well known show rats (they are shown for colour and marking). These 3 were rejects as they did not have the right markings. All my rats have been named after classic figures (my children's rats have not been). These were named after the three graces from Hesiod and Homer. The youngest of the three was Aglaea meaning shining one which seemed like a good name for a white rat who was the runt of the litter. Obviously that got shortened to Aggie.
Aggie had the most remarkable character and was very hard not to like. She very quickly became a huge favourite and very fat. I shall long remember her trick of taunting the neighbours cat by patrolling up and down the window sill with her tail in the air saying “Eat me, eat me.â€
She was supposed to be a Himalayan rat which is to say white with a dark nose and base of her tail and dark red eyes. Fortunately that didn't work out and she was a common or garden Pink Eyed White hence the Pew.
Erin is my wife. It is not her actual name (which is Delphyne) but I use Erin for 'er indoors. |

I joined AtP because its members were the most active and the most fun of any PG team on the Message Boards. I have stayed because its members are so friendly, and so accomplished in many endeavours outside of prime-finding (poetry, puns, programming, photography, astronomy, running, and teaching to name a few).
