Welcome to the Leonids Challenge
Watch out, winter is coming! (On the northern hemisphere at least) Although winter has some good sides, all the cold and what not is only good to push your crunchers to the maximum. PrimeGrid is therefore more than happy to oblige and offer a 5 day challenge coinciding with the Leonids Meteor Shower. Be careful with pushing your machines though, wouldn't want to turn it into a meteor!
A 5 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's 321 Prime Search (LLR) application. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the 321 Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 19 November 2014 18:00 UTC and end 24 November 2014 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux, MacIntel, and Windows 32 and 64 bit.
NOTE: In your PrimeGrid preferences section, set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to no to guarantee that no other work will be sent.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take 8-12 hours on fast/newer computers and 25+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)
Restricted airflow is one of the primary reasons for overheating. Take the time to monitor the fans and review the dust buildup. Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.
Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 19 November 2014 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 24 November 2014 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit.
Each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

321 Prime Search is a continuation of Paul Underwood's 321 Search (see below) which looked for primes of the form 3*2^n-1. PrimeGrid added the +1 form and continues the search up to n=25M.

What is LLR?
The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n - 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

About 321 Search
321 Search began in February 2003 from a post by Paul Underwood seeking help from interested parties in a prime search attempt of the form 3*2^n-1. The initial goal was to build upon the completed work at Proth Search and extend the list of known primes to an exponent of 1 million (n=1M). That was quickly achieved so they advanced their goal to finding a mega prime for which they sieved up to n=5M.
As seen on PrimeGrid's front page, that goal was achieved on 23 Mar 2008, 7:57:28 UTC, when Dylan Bennett of Canada returned a positive result for n=4235414 (3*2^4235414-1). official announcement | decimal representation

In preparation for next year's MPC (Multi Project Challenges) that have more than one project in the challenge, I'm updating the challenge statistics software.
It should have no effect on the Leonids Challenge, but let me know if you notice any odd behavior.
As with all recent challenges, the challenge scoring for the Leonids is identical to the BOINC credit, so it should be easy to see if something is wrong. The only exception would be if a prime is found on one of the projects where primes get more credit because of extra processing. The challenge system has no way of knowing if a task reported a prime. That only effects SGS and SR5, so it won't be a factor in this 321-LLR challenge.

Should we be lucky enough to find a prime during this challenge, it would be over 3 million digits long and also would be the largest prime ever found at PrimeGrid. Like the 321 prime we found in January, it would be the 12th largest known prime.

World Record 321 Mega Prime Found!
PrimeGrid’s 321 Prime Search project found the mega prime:
3·2^11484018—1
The prime is 3,457,035 digits long and enters Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 12th overall. This is the largest known 321 mega prime and the largest prime found to date at PrimeGrid!
The discovery was made by Serhiy Gushchak (Sergyg) of Ukraine.

why is the mega prime found still not announced on the front page? It is the largest prime found by primegrid and as it is now listed in the top5000 I would assume it is now official.
The best answer, although perhaps not very satisfying, is that none of the "staff" is actually paid anything. We're all volunteers. This doesn't mean that we don't care about what we're doing (we do -- a lot), but it does mean that we've all got to do other things to earn a living, as well as having personal lives.
The result is that all things PrimeGrid by necessity take a back seat to everything else that we need to do, so sometimes things simply have to wait until we have enough free time to take care of PrimeGrid's business.
For those of us in the United States, last week was a big, big holiday week with most people having plans to get together with relatives, as well as colleges and universities being closed for most of the week (disrupting schedules for the students, faculty, and parents alike), and so forth. For some, that means extra free time, but for others it means no free time at all. (I personally spent at least 14 hours on the road last week for holiday related travel, for example.)
The bottom line is right now we're just waiting on manpower rather than any technical reason. It will be "officially" announced as soon as we can get all the details worked out, as will another mega prime that was found yesterday. (We've now found at least one mega prime in every month of 2014!)

Sorry about that. It is my fault. As Mike noted, the Thanksgiving holiday in the US is a major one that kept me out of the loop for a few days. The past few days I have just been overwhelmed with real work and could not get to it. I should have it up in the next day or two.
