I didn't know where else to post this, so I just started a new thread. Kill me. Anyway:

This has got to be the most overpriced DDR3 ever, even if it is extremely fast (although judging by that review, not as fast as it sounds). $2000/£1250 for the two, or $1000/£625 per 4GB stick. Considering DDR4 will be with us next year, I think buying that^ would be a very bad investment, considering you'll require a new mobo to accommodate DDR4 too.

Seems a bit pricey.

I'll toss another one into the mix:
Here is a 3-meter USB cable for about $1000.

Wow. What a bargain. I used to have a link to an HDMI cable for something like that, but I can't find it now. Has anyone else seen any "bargains" such as these? Cables seem to be the top player in this category don't they, lots of "Ultra-true digital quality" stuff for lots of cash out there. That USB cable takes some beating.

Edit: that company is having a laugh, aren't they?

Another gem from AQ. A pair of 8-foot-long speaker wires for $11,700. Not a typo... nearly 12 thousand dollars. That's for two, remember... Lord help you if you have seven-channel surround sound in your home theater setup.

At least it got a glowing review in that article.

I've not bought any for ages, but for a self-present for my 21st birthday I bought some £500 Mission floorstanding speakers (a complete waste of money, incidentally, I'm now thinking about selling them, still in mint condition, and doubt I'll get £100 for them). I bought what I thought was "high end" speaker cable at the time, gold-plated and very thick, etc. I can't remember how much it cost (I bought a big reel, to cut to size) but it was something like £40, which I was hesitant about at the time. If I was buying those $11,000 cables I'd have had to buy two pairs just for those front stereo speakers, in order to bi-wire them from my amp.

The speakers are now taking up room and haven't been used for about a year because my 5.1ch amplifier went a bit faulty years ago, and I dare say if I used them where I currently live, the council would be round with about 10 different complaints about excessive noise, from neighbours. I wasted a lot of money that year, but at least I didn't spend $11,000 on one pair of speaker cables. I just can't believe that some people do, those reviews are surely either by teenagers who have somehow got hold of free samples, or people who work for the company? I remember seeing a review on Hydrogenaudio which discussed the merits of the colour of different CD-Rs (yes, just the visible dye colour of the reflective layer). Some expensive black ones won the test, because they featured "fulller, sharper bass". I suppose they do something magical to those ones and zeroes, somehow.

Ah, yes, the analog qualities of digital media. It's also a well-known fact that red USB flash drives are faster than all other colors, since red is the shortest wavelength in the visible spectrum.

TheDawgz have new evidence to support the above ... we just spray painted our MB/CPU/memory a glorious hot metallic red - ran so much faster that it burst into flames (we think we might have needed a few more fans for proper cooling).

Ah, yes, the analog qualities of digital media.

I once read an article written by a CD player designer. It was a while ago but the basic idea was that it may come off the cd digitally but it's then converted to analog and there appears to be a whole lot of voodoo involved in the process due to any electronic noise upsetting the analog signal.

That's down to the electronics in the amplifier (and speakers, and speaker cables to a degree) though, not the CD.

I know it's not what you were referring to when you mentioned "electrical noise", but I think it's best practice to have speaker cables running "across" (i.e. not parallel) to electricity cables, because that minimises a lot of interference. I think the same is true of co-ax cables (i.e. terrestrial TV, and also Cable and satellite stuff which uses co-ax with F-connectors).

The eventual signal passed to speakers with an audio setup must always be analogue, because the speakers can't convert digital to analogue - that's done in the amplifier, with a DAC (Digital-Analogue Converter) chip.

In the late 90s the most expensive Sony amps used a mechanism whereby the CD was moved, as opposed to the optical lens, as the CD was played - supposedly providing a more stable platform which was less likely to make the CD skip if nudged. But that was completely unnecessary anyway, because the players in question already had to same anti-jitter data buffers in them which the Discman players of almost a decade earlier had, so as long as you didn't hit it with a baseball bat and/or break anything else, the CD wouldn't skip; regardless of whether the CD moved across the laser, or whether the laser moved across the CD.

I haven't managed to find the article I was thinking of but this is the same guy and touches on some of the same problems with "digital is perfect"

I think we're not debating the same thing - both of us are saying that amplifiers, speaker cables, and speakers can affect audio quality; but not the actual CD itself*, which is what I was talking about. Apologies if I've misunderstood, if that's the case then I'll have to have a re-read.

*CDs photodegrade and also... er, degrade in other ways over time too, I think, so there's probably a strong argument for buying non-cheap-as-dirt CD-Rs if you want to store them for 10 years and then listen to them. But if we're talking a lifespan of a couple of years, I don't think the actual media can make any difference at all. Aside from media which has manufacturing defects or is made to not comply with basic ISO standards, of course.

It's been ages since I've talked about this though, so sorry if I'm wrong and am asserting my opinion as correct, when I've actually been daydreaming :)

presuming that the cd is in good condition, yes, but as soon as the player has to start correcting any errors then there will be a difference.

I read interesting info about that - apparently, the fatal mistake a lot of people make is cleaning a CD "around", i.e. clockwise or anti-clockwise, when you should really clean it from centre to edge. That's because all the data blocks, which of course include the error correction segments, run "around" the disc. so if a block is like this:

ECdataECdata101011101110111ECdataECdata

Then by cleaning and possibly scratching/smearing the CD, if you do it "around" the "clock", either way, you might scratch/smear the whole block; whereas if you clean centre to outside, even if you scratch it a little bit, it's more likely to end up as:

ECdataECdata101011101110[scratch]ECdataECdata

...And is thus recoverable. Of course, considering how small a block of data on a CD is, you'd be lucky not to damage it either way if you clean it too vigourously... which is another negative point about reviews of CDs and the like, usually they either break unrecoverably, or they're fine.

In any case, I completely agree that the amplifier and its internal components can make a massive difference, I only meant that (as far as I know) the colour of dye in the reflective layer of a CD can't make any difference, unless it's specifically designed to obscure laser readings, for some reason.

And I didn't want to start an argument either, I'm sure the ins and outs of all of this are far beyond my comprehension :)
