Welcome to the World Animal Day Challenge
A 5 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's The Riesel Problem (LLR) application. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the The Riesel Problem (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 4 October 2013 18:00 UTC and end 9 October 2013 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux , Windows and MacIntel 32 bit and 64 bit. CPU's with AVX capabilities will be significantly faster than the ones without, as this instruction set allows for more computing power.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~6 hours on fast/newer computers and 12+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Time zone converter:
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.
Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 4 October 2013 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 9 October 2013 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use a modified version of our credit algorithm which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) and adjusted for the type of number and FFT size to score the challenge. The main difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score. (The FFT size adjustment, which will be used in this challenge, isn't yet included in the real credit function.)
Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)
Hans Ivar Riesel (born 1929 in Stockholm) is a Swedish mathematician. In 1956, he showed that there are an infinite number of positive odd integer k's such that k*2^n-1 is composite (not prime) for every integer n>=1. These numbers are now called Riesel numbers. He further showed that k=509203 was such one.
It is conjectured that 509203 is the smallest Riesel number. The Riesel problem consists in determining that 509203 is the smallest Riesel number. To show that it is the smallest, a prime of the form k*2^n-1 must be found for each of the positive integer k's less than 509203. As of April 2011, there remains 56 k's for which no primes have been found. They are as follows:
2293, 9221, 23669, 31859, 38473, 40597, 46663, 67117, 74699, 81041, 93839, 97139, 107347, 121889, 129007, 143047, 146561, 161669, 192971, 206039, 206231, 215443, 226153, 234343, 245561, 250027, 252191, 273809, 304207, 315929, 319511, 324011, 325123, 327671, 336839, 342847, 344759, 362609, 363343, 364903, 365159, 368411, 371893, 384539, 386801, 397027, 398023, 402539, 409753, 444637, 470173, 474491, 477583, 485557, 494743, 502573
For a more detailed history and status of the Riesel problem, please visit Wilfrid Keller's The Riesel Problem: Definition and Status.
Additional Information
[list]
- Riesel Number (Wolfram MathWorld)
- Riesel Number (Wiki)
- Riesel Number (The Prime Glossary)
The Riesel problem is to k*2^n-1 as the Sierpinski problem is to k*2^n+1. There is no equivalent to the 'prime' Sierpinski problem since k=509203, the conjectured smallest Riesel number, is prime.
What is LLR?
The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:
(Edouard Lucas: 1842-1891, Derrick H. Lehmer: 1905-1991, Hans Riesel: born 1929).

No, sieving does not count for challenge scoring. You can still run TRP LLR work without AVX, just not as fast.

Sorry, but no.
The Riesel Problem Sieve won't count even if you run it on an abacus. Like all the BOINC challenges we've ever run, this challenge is only for a single project, TRP-LLR.

Hi all,
Not sure if this is a "big" problem - but I've been crunching some TRP LLR WU's for the challenge, but I don't appear in the list of participants here:
http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2013_7/top_users.html
is this an oversight/error and maybe more crunchers are involved and more credits are being generated than is actually being shown ?

Hi Timbo
It looks like many if not all your TRP w/us were downloaded before the start of the challenge. They only count if they are downloaded after the start and returned before the end.
You probably want to 1) abort those w/u and 2) join ATP.

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
OK, so I can understand why not allowing WU's downloaded before the challenge might not be acceptable - coz a few might build up a big cache and hence could improve their position to a higher level by uploading results during the challenge period. :-(
It's just a shame that in my case, I don't have broadband or dial up available 24/7, so all I can do is to download WU's when I *do* have access and then resume/suspend specific projects when such challenges come up.
I won't abort all the WU's I have as they still need to be crunched plus it's now the 7th Oct and for any new WU's I download now, my 2 PC's (that take 24 hrs+ and 48hrs+ to complete each WU), may not have finished in time so they may not count towards the challenge total by the time the deadline is reached on the 9th.
Shame, but there you go.
Thanks again
Tim |
|
|
|
Hi Timbo
I don't make the rules.
The only think I'd say is if you abort the tasks they'll go straight back into the pool for someone else to do. If they are downloaded in the next couple of days they could form part of the challenge. Meanwhile you could download some different wus and enjoy the challenge too.
All the best

With a bit less under one day remaining, here are some statistics on the challenge:
85124 TRP tasks have been sent out so far during the challenge.
44948 of those have been successfully returned.
33949 of those have validated.
During the challenge, n has been increased from 6497423 to 6621733.
One prime has been found.
Edit 1: We have averaged 21071 tasks per day during this challenge. Normally, we average 1267 tasks per day.
Edit 2: Of those 85 thousand challenge tasks, 23 thousand of them have gone to the individual at the top of the challenge leader board, and 15 thousand of those have been returned so far.

Idle speculation: Progress on the k where the prime was found has been stopped. Dividing "In progress" tasks by "Complete" tasks the lowest is k=9221 at 0.02043. I'll keep watching and if it goes lower then that's the k of our prime find. The next lowest is k=2293 at 0.02088, so we're down at the noise floor. |

Unfortunately my computer froze while I went on vacation over the weekend, so I wasn’t able to get much work done during the challenge, but I do still plan on sitting on the project for long enough to get my gold badge out of the way. I am very glad to see that we eliminated a k during the challenge. That just means that we will be able to push the leading edge forward that much faster during the next TRP challenge.

Challenge Cleanup:
9-Oct: 11045 tasks outstanding; 6373 in individual (198) scoring positions; 5478 in team (89) scoring positions.
Those who would like to help with the cleanup are welcome to do so, but as with most cleanups, it's rarely a problem getting enough computing power to do the work. It's simply a matter of waiting for the tasks to be crunched and the results returned.

Challenge Cleanup:
9-Oct: 11045 tasks outstanding; 6373 in individual (198) scoring positions; 5478 in team (89) scoring positions.
10-Oct: 8889 tasks outstanding; 4994 in individual (197) scoring positions; 4410 in team (85) scoring positions.
Those who would like to help with the cleanup are welcome to do so, but as with most cleanups, it's rarely a problem getting enough computing power to do the work. It's simply a matter of waiting for the tasks to be crunched and the results returned.
Thank you everyone for a fantastic challenge!

I do not have time to do a reboot to switch HT on, so I will stay another day in the cleanup ...
Congrats to the primefinder and good luck to all the unfortunate searchers!

I'd help if I could but I've had a failure of some kind and am away from home. |

No worries; getting enough computing power for the cleanups is never a problem. Hopefully the failure was something simple.
