Is it possible to split up PPS and PPS_extended (PPSE) into two sub-projects of Proth Prime Search (just like GFN & GFN-WR)?
That way run times would be more consistent and slow hosts especially would benefit from the possibility of selecting the much shorter PPSE WU's.

If we did split it, what should we do with the PPS badge? Should we create a new PPSE badge, or have credit from both count towards the PPS badge?

As a point of reference, this is similar to the short and WR GFN projects, which both count towards a single GFN badge.

EDIT: As a general question, what do people prefer, having PPS/PPSE (or GFN-short/GFN-WR) stats & badges combined or separate?

EDIT*2: *My* opinion (I had to think about this a bit) would be to keep PPS & PPSE badges and stats combined, the way GFN is combined. That doesn't mean they can't be separate projects which can be chosen independently. The reason is that With separate badges for each range, you're more likely to retire a badge, and nobody likes when that happens. By keeping them combined, you're less likely to have a retired badge that nobody can earn anymore.

IMO, PPS & PPSE should remain combined in stats and continue to count towards a single PPS badge.
They are both part of the Proth Prime Search (just varying in length & run time)
Furthermore, I think it would be unfair to create a new PPSE badge because non of the points generated so far by PPSE WU's could be counted towards the new badge.
On the other hand, creating a new batch would give users the opportunity to add a new "trophy" to their PG stats, especially if they already have a full set.

I support splitting PPS and PPSE into two different projects to sign onto and having both projects count toward the same PPS badge that already exists (much in the same way that GFN short and GFN long count toward the same badge).

Having discussed this amongst ourselves -

TheDawgz do not support splitting PPS and PPSE.

We predict that PPS will be heavily worked as users attempt to find the near-Mega primes that will remain on the Top 5000 for extended periods of time (we know this is what TheDawgz would do) - while forward motion on PPSE would come to a near standstill.

That said, should the split come to pass, we would prefer to keep a single combined badge.

I thought the exact opposite - that people would want to run the shorter-duration PPSE jobs. I'd also prefer to keep one badge for both.

NPLB split up their RPS search into drives and mini-drives:
http://www.noprimeleftbehind.net/stats/index.php?content=drive_progress
Maybe medium term drives are the way to go with the ranges managed by the Admins but all counting towards the same badge.
Just depends how we want to organise things.
Primegrid already has k-specific searches (3, 27, 121) where you can aim for a Mega prime.

I support one PPS badge. Just like GFN/GFN-WR.

Having the two be separately selectable in preferences, or not? I'm fine with it either way.

I'm with Gary on this.

This may be more complex on server side but anyway...
We can select block size for GFN.
I can imagine select options for (single) PPS subproject like:
"give me short ones",
"give me long ones",
"give me both".
Another option what I miss for a long time is "give me old ones / trailing edge / I'm for cleanup".

This would solve both PPS/PPSE option and make cleanup process much faster.

Fine either way lol. I guess having the options like GFN is best, with a combined badge.

I kind of like the unknown if I am getting an Extended or not. I agree there is some desire to be able to only do short ones for a bit (like right before a challenge). As stated GFN has the separation so it's feasible.

I do agree no extra badge, it's all PPS. Plus there would be tons of people requesting the other badge because they believe they did enough work in both.

I wonder if it was easy enough to split and see if PPSE keeps up? If it doesn't then maybe joining it back together.

A bigger question I think is how would you run this in a challenge setting?

A bigger question I think is how would you run this in a challenge setting?

There have typically been two PPS LLR challenges each year, I imagine that we would just do one challenge for PPS and one challenge for PPSE if they were split.

Like most postings I would support a split in the WUs but not the badges. I am not sure that a rectroactive seperation of the work for each badge would even be possible.

If the longer work was selectable then those like me who have a computer not always connected to the internet could select only the longer ones to reduce the frequency of connections needed, having said that I find my weather computer in the garage has plenty to do with SOB, PSP LLR etc so a split is not really needed for this purpose.

I agree that short jobs only also has uses, for before a challenge and for the many atoms out there for example.

Most users do not need to make a decision so the idea of short/long/any seems good to me.

Give Users the choice of either. Over time, the long term aim of using bigger units to match the steady increase in average crunching power will still be achieved - and therefore the needed reduction on the Server-Hit, which I suspect is the ultimate aim.

Force a faster switch and you lose the lower powered Users. The latter is not a good thing - it may be more "efficient", but there is a social side to BOINC crunching that must never be forgotten. Lower powered users must be catered for.

There is a limit to the latter - of course - but lets not force the pace and push away lower powered users *before time". Dont forget that the bigger WUs are a significant chunk for the lowered powered User to take on. Its a balancing act of course - just don't force the pace of pushing away the bottom end machines.

The latter always happens in the end, that's life, but don't raise the Bar too fast and force the pace of change too much.

Not really, at least not since we switched to the new servers back in February. (It's not just the hardware; the database in the new server is configured better and that makes a huge difference.) I'm not worried at all about the server's capacity, generally speaking.

Force a faster switch and you lose the lower powered Users. The latter is not a good thing - it may be more "efficient", but there is a social side to BOINC crunching that must never be forgotten. Lower powered users must be catered for.

While we won't necessarily force *every* subproject to be accessible to everyone, we do try to make as much of PrimeGrid usable to as many people as possible, and that specifically includes people with slow computers. I happen to be one of those people, so I've got a pretty good idea of which projects can be used by slow machines and which ones can't. We'll make sure that the shorter projects stay short enough, and their deadlines long enough, so that, within reason, everyone can particpate. That doesn't mean you're going to be able to run GFN-WR tasks on a 486DX2, but you probably would be able to run PPS-LLR. If you look at my computers, I've got a Sempron 3000+ (32-bit single core) running BOINC, so I tend to notice if the shorter projects become unusable on a computer like that.

(In case anyone's wondering, there ARE a pair of 486 computers in the database. They last contacted the server in 2005 and 2007.)

Looks like this is happening right now :) There is now PPS and PPS_Extended separate on the home page. I'm guessing that they are working on it now, the site is being very slow for me right now and tasks are taking a minute or so to report.. And same with getting new tasks. It took 14 seconds to download a PPS_LLR_Extended WU.

Another - practical - factor of running "Dual Apps" on a Project is that it frees the software designer from hardware constraints. The more modern faster machine can take full advantage of the latest hardware and software capabilities, whilst the slower machine can still participate with the smaller - and likely less capable in terms of the latest hardware/software technique - WU.

The dual "trend" I can see happening more and more. Machines are now incredibly powerful compared to days of old (rofl .... only 5 years ago lmao). Hardware sales and releases of things like Graphics cards are being slowed, as less and less computer users "automatically" upgrade. Ten years ago it was a case of "sprint don't walk" to get the latest CPU / GPU - not anymore .... cost/benefit ratio has changed.

The pendulum on the latter will swing back in the end as a new technology genre of hardware (not just a go faster version) emerges. However, for us mere mortals in the next ten years, there will not be much hardware switching compared to days of old. The manufacturers know that, AMD recently slowed the release cycle of 8XXX in response to all this, and there will be more like that as the effect of less frequent user hardware changes takes hold. I think dual applications (one for faster, one for slower, machines) in a Project to meet this in the BOINC world is inevitable in the next decade.

PPSE task generation has been turned off in order to drain them from the PPS queue. There's still plenty of PPSE tasks in the queue, but eventually there won't be.

Feel free to speculate wildly about what this implies. :)

And by that I mean that the PPS/PPSE split is now live.

Everyone that had PPS selected before should now have both PPS and PPSE selected. mimicking the behavior from before the split. In a few cases, if you happen to have been editing the preferences while the updates were being made, you might not have automatically had PPSE enabled. If so, you can just go to the preferences page and turn it on manually.

Combined badge for both, and combined stats on your account page as well (same as the GFN behavior).

Please let us know what we broke. :)

How come "Recent average CPU time:" 22:32 for PPS and 23:28 for PPSE where you update preferences? Is it automatically generated estimates?

How come "Recent average CPU time:" 22:32 for PPS and 23:28 for PPSE where you update preferences? Is it automatically generated estimates?

Give it a while to stabilize. The PPSE number looks right, but it will take a while for the PPS number to contain only PPS tasks without the previous PPSE tasks.

Right now, 82% of the tasks included in the PPS stats are actually PPSE tasks from before the split.

I'm a bit confused. The two are PPS (regular) and PPSE (E=extended). To me, that means the PPSE tasks are going to run longer than PPS. But the announce says the reverse, "...PPS retaining the longer PPS tasks and the shorter PPSE tasks now having their own project."

Yes, it can be a bit confusing on first look.

Proth Prime Search: k×2n+1 for k<1200
Proth Prime Search Extended: k×2n+1 for 1200<k<10000

It is extended in k range. Because this range is wider (more candidates to test), n is lower (slower progress) and therefore shorter runtime for individual LLR test.

Once Recent average CPU time is settled, it should help.

Although the PPS and PPSE projects have been split, and all new PPSE workunits are going into the PPSE project, there's still a significant number of old PPSE workunits in progress in the PPS project. As of right now, there's almost 6500 old PPSE workunits still active.

Some of them will inevitably have an error, or miss their deadline, or have inconclusive results, and will need to be sent out again. Therefore, there will continue to be a small number of PPSE tasks sent out on the PPS project, at least for a little while.
