Larger n lower k's

We will now start searching k=5 & k=7.

That means longer wu. time.

k=5 to 6M - (currently at n=5M)
k=7 to 6M - (currently at n=5M)

After they are done we will do k=9.

k=9 to 4M - (currently at n=3M)

Well... I hope the credits will change though...

The old WU's: 450 seconds -> +/- 8 points per WU
The new WU's: 20.000 seconds: +/- 55 points per WU

So 50 times longer work, only 7 times the points. So for the moment, I am changing my machines to SGS...

Why not take k=9 to 6M as well? Doing that would have all k < 10 searched to 6M. I'd have to adjust the prothsearch site, but that is easy to do.

I was wondering why my tasks suddenly became more difficult to complete. :P

That's quite the jump in computation time for me (30 minutes before to 8 hours now). Would this be a good time to resurrect the idea of a CUDA application for the PPSllr?

We should of switched to these long WUs before the last challenge!

Would this be a good time to resurrect the idea of a CUDA application for the PPSllr?

I take it you're volunteering to optimize the application? :)

Seriously, though, where the project stands is that llrCUDA was about 2 times faster than the non-AVX 32 bit LLR. It's faster, but not the blinding speed we've come to expect from some other GPU apps. The speed differential vs the AVX version would obviously be less.

Furthermore, at the time this project faded away, there were unresolved issues with reliability which I now suspect may be the same overclocking/overheating problem we see with GeneferCUDA. If true, especially with the bigger numbers, we're likely to see the same sort of abysmally poor error rates we're seeing with the world record GFN tasks. Or maybe not quite so bad because all of the LLR projects are working on much smaller numbers.

Technically, it's possible. I just don't see how it's worth both the hassle and the opportunity cost given the modest improvement in speed.

if it's only a 2x speed improvement (and obviously it depends what gpu/cpu you're comparing there) then when even the cheapest CPUs these days are at least dual core there is really no point as the CPU will be able run at least the same number if not more units in a given time and that's without bringing AVX into the equation.
Definitely far better to let the GPU run things that it excels at.

Why not take k=9 to 6M as well? Doing that would have all k < 10 searched to 6M. I'd have to adjust the prothsearch site, but that is easy to do.

Maybe we will do that.

Just now loaded k=9 3M-4M

Are http://www.prothsearch.com/range02.html and
http://www.prothsearch.com/prothbook.html obsolete now? There's no update for k=7 or k=9.
I am curious about k=15.

Are http://www.prothsearch.com/range02.html and
http://www.prothsearch.com/prothbook.html obsolete now? There's no update for k=7 or k=9.
I am curious about k=15.

Ok, I got an answer from Mark.

Hi !

I just noticed that we are currently testing numbers with k < 100 and n > 2M and I know my computer is checking numbers already tested according to the page: http://www.prothsearch.com/prothbook.html. I guess Primegrid will only double-check all those numbers.

Some of my results are like that one: (here k=45 and n=2034264)

443298006 --- 21 Mar 2013 | 3:50:06 UTC 21 Mar 2013 | 4:50:06 UTC Terminé et validé 0.00 20,000.00 77.62 443298729 222954 21 Mar 2013 | 4:12:22 UTC 21 Mar 2013 | 5:30:20 UTC Terminé et validé 3,165.22 3,130.33 77.62 PPS (LLR) v6.15

Output of the second task is
<stderr_txt>Residue check C8B66640565D7D27</stderr_txt>

I know that range has already been checked:

User ID: Darren Wallace <footmaster@gmail.com>
Range of K: 45, Range of N: 2000000-2100000, Primes found: 45*2^2014557+1 is Prime Divides GF(2014552, 10) 45*2^2014557+1 is a Factor of xGF(2014553,4,3). checked - Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 16:48:55 (GMT)

Is it the result of the first check ?

We have a deal there we will check ALL numbers also allready tested ranges so we get them dublechecked. That mens we will do some search that other allready have done. But Not many are done so it is a very small amount we are DC'ing.
