Well this was annoying. I shut down this morning just before leaving for work in the usual manner, just like every other day. When I came home and fired things up again, the BOINC manager on my main crunching box said, "you are not attached to any project", and presented the "attach to project or account manager" Wizard window. I tried restarting the boinc client ("sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart", in a Linux shell window), to no avail. Rebooted the OS; still nothing. Drat. Looked in the BOINC "Data directory" (as noted in the Messages tab, very near the top), and lo and behold, the "projects" directory was MISSING. Crimeny how did that happen (I certainly wasn't messing around in there). Well, bite the bullet, and reattach to PG. It downloads all of the apps fresh, and gives me a new set of WUs. Occasionally I get a "re-sent lost task" message, so at least it seems to be cleaning up the stuff I had in my queue, so they won't just die of old age.

Of course the annoying thing is that I lost all work on my in-progress tasks. Fortunately I did an "update" before shutting down, but I still had 8 TRP Sieve and one (gpu) PPS Sieve tasks at various stages of completion, which I'll now have to start over. The scary thing is that since I still have no clue whatsoever as to the root cause, for all I know, the same thing might happen the next time I shut down.

Silver lining: less than 48 hours before this episode, I finished and reported my one ongoing Seventeen or Bust task. Close call on that one! My other two machines (both Macs) continue along, happy as clams...

If anyone has any advice or wisdom regarding any of this, I'd be grateful. Unfortunately "never shut down" isn't an option, much as I'd like :-) I think maybe at some point very soon I may drain my cache and reinstall BOINC with the latest version (still 6.10.58 for ubuntu, which is what I've got now, but maybe a reinstall will clean up anything corrupt).

Many thanks for listening. Go AtP!

I have an idea, oh wait.. nevermind. You said it wasn't an option. :-)

In seriousness though, that seems extremely odd.. keep us posted if you do find anything so it doesn't happen to others.

Here's another aspect of "lost work"... this unfortunate shortcoming in BOINC itself where you get sent CPU units of PPS Sieve work when your preferences clearly only specify GPU units. There are a couple different threads on the main boards about this and I've seen Rick post about it as well. This happens to me from time to time and I always abort the units as soon as I see them (wasting a few hours, if they come in overnight) since the GPU can do them in something like 12 minutes, as opposed to something like 20 hours on a CPU core.

I've tried various games with Preferences, et cetera, with no luck. But I just thought of something that might work. I went into the directory where the executable resides and changed the permissions on it to read-only. That way if I get more CPU units, they should immediately error-out. That particular program (primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) is only used for PPS Sieve CPU, I believe, so it shouldn't impact other sub-projects. I've successfully suspended and resumed BOINC since then, and everything restarted okay. I will report back later once I have evidence that this is stopping the PPS Sieve units from running with no side effects... I'm pretty sure it will.

Please let us know what you find! I get one or two of these every night. First thing I do when I wake up is abort these. :-( sometimes I waste 4-5 hours of good CPU time.

Reboot today went fine. Hmmm.... (not complaining!)

No errant CPU units yet, but they're sure to come. Stay tuned.

One thing I thought of on the down-side of this scheme is that it might cause the computer in question to become scored "less reliable" by the BOINC server software, due to the occasional "error" (as opposed to "abort") status. But I think all that means is that maybe you get sent more units with a wingman for tasks like SGS instead of just going solo (see "adaptive replication"). Maybe also it reduces the WU buffer size the server will let you have. I can live with all of that. And still, if you see a WU you don't want that hasn't started, you can still "abort" in the normal fashion.

It's a real pain to have to monitor your system for unwanted jobs. I've tried all the posted fixes and none of them work. Short of not running cpu at all it still grabs the wrong job. But then it's all free.

Okay, "one" is not a statistically valid sample, but I will provide this preliminary report:

Success!

The following WU was downloaded to my Mac and error-ed out about 3 minutes later, with 0.00 CPU expended, at an unattended computer:

288747860 201846733 189283 19 Aug 2011 | 7:09:16 UTC 19 Aug 2011 | 7:12:30 UTC Error while computing 0.00 0.00 --- Proth Prime Search (Sieve) v1.39

Note there's no "cuda" notation... this was a CPU PPS Sieve task.

Okay, what I did was very simple:

cd "/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/www.primegrid.com" chmod 444 primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_x86_64-apple-darwin

One needs to be the privileged "root" user to effect this, or the owner account itself. Of course your actual command will be different if your BOINC data directory is in a different place (like it is on Linux), or if you have a different version of the app or OS. The main thing is to make it (tpsieve, CPU version) read-only.

At first I also tried changing the owner & group of that same executable. That did not work. The BOINC Manager refused to start after a reboot, telling me that I needed to reinstall BOINC. I manually reverted the ownership to the original values, but leaving the permissions at 444 (meaning "read only for everyone, no matter what", for you non-unix-aficionados). BOINC Manager was happy to start with it like that. I'm running 6.10.58.

The project can't be too unhappy with me as it is still sending work. I'm optimistic the similar tweak will work on my Linux box... I've already made it; just waiting for confirming evidence. I'm not sure what the equivalent thing is for our Windows teammates; there's that "read only" check-box on a file's properties, but I don't know if that implies "no execute" or just "not writable". One thing I think is not effective is to just delete the app... BOINC will likely just re-fetch it.

Are you running any cpu llr's at moment? The reason I ask is that if you stopped the pps cpu and haven't tested the other cpu jobs they might not work. I'd be interested to know about that. I'm afraid my sg's will stop as well not to mention any updates the the trp file will not take.

Edit: ok I tried what you did but i aborted the pps job and the files all went away. the slot folder holds the current wu info and once it's gone so are any settings and then of course new jobs will take their place.

There is a slot folder (directory) for each wu running in case anyone wonders.

I'm running BOINC SGS LLR on the Mac in question (in addition to PPS Sieve on GPU). SGS WUs download, run, report, and validate a-ok since my tweak.

At the time of my tweak, I did not have one of the "bad" units running. I didn't mess around with anything in the slot folders... just changed permissions on the program itself.

I've verified that my change to keep the unwanted CPU PPS Sieve tasks from running is working on both Mac and Linux. I'm going to post on the main boards regarding it... it would be nice to not get the WUs in the first place, but having them error-out quickly without manual intervention is the next best thing.

Regarding my other issue, the one that I started this thread with, I think the problem was that I unknowingly had BOINC installed in two different places on the same machine. BOINC is a standard package that comes with a Linux (ubuntu 10.10) install, but I had also probably done a standard download from the BOINC or PG webpage too at some point. I recently d/l'd the latest OS kernel and manually removed the other boinc client version from my "Downloads" directory and it seems happy now.
