Whose ready for the Dog Days of Summer? :-) Only 10 days away! As always, only participate if you want to, but it is always a lot of fun.
I think ATP has a decent chance for a high ranking this time around. We have quite a bit of CPU processing on the team. (Rick, you still have your cores available? )
We did pretty well on the last challenge, but that was a GPU challenge basically. So lets see what we can do this time!
Currently overall for the year, ATP is #29 in team points. I think this number will jump after this next challenge.

I am planning on having a go. I like PPS.
Until recently much of AtP's work was done on CPUs and we tended to do realtively well on CPU challenges. I suspect also that a larger proportion of our cores will be moved over compared with other teams. Top 20 for the challenge is do-able I believe.

As of today the cores I had are still running. Never know from day to day however and 10 days is a long time in this case. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
We might actually be higher than 29th overall since we did really well in the last one (24th) and the overall page has not been updated yet.
I have NO doubt that ATP will do well in this challenge even if I can't contribute since all you other heavy hitters are out there. Like Tim, I'd say top 20 and if I still have the old cores running, I'd even venture a top 15.
ps - this summer has really gone by quickly... school here has already started |

I did check shortly after the last challenge results were posted; we were either 29th or 30th. A team came in from nowhere with a big score as I recall.

I'm "all in" with an even dozen cores/threads. This will be my first full CPU-only challenge with AtP (I joined at the tail end of the Cinco de Mayo event).

I'm ready for the challenge! I got most of my badge goals done, (just waiting on some wingmen in Cullen) So I've already switched all my cores to PPS in preparation of the challenge.
I forgot how much fun short work units are! :-) Maybe I can get lucky and get a hit before the challenge comes and people get lots of primes.

Im actually thinking I'm going to turn off my GPUs for the next two days just to maximize my CPU usage. that alone though should significantly cut down on my heat problems. :-) that AMD 6990 is a heat machine! heats the whole room alone.

Just my luck the forecast hottest few days of the summer so far in L.A. start tomorrow... I had planned to crank up the o/c a bit (more) but it's going to stay right where it has been, for the challenge, nice and stable....

p.s. at least I'm not on the east coast and have to worry about the power going out (or worse!) from hurricane Irene. My dad lives near Asheville NC and he's not too worried. If we have any AtP members on the eastern seaboard; best wishes to you all and BE SAFE!!! |

I 2nd Gary's well wishes to anyone within the path of the hurricane. Also best of luck to everyone running the challenge and go AtP.

It is an English public holiday this weekend (not for the Scots who have to work for a change) and so the weather forecast for London, naturally makes that for New York look like a balmy late summer*.
I'll set my cores to work when I get home I hope just in time for the off. Dido Rat is champing at the bit, if you'll pardon a mixed metaphor, to get started. She has gnawed through her gnaw-proof cage again today.
Cheers!

Anyone else having issues getting wu's? I was going to leave for the weekend. Would like to get these cores churning before I leave. If I don't get some wu's soon, I may be out of the challenge. |

It took about 13 minutes to get all cores crunching for me. The two slower machines seemed to get going in 6-8 minutes, but the i7 took longer.

Interesting. I can't get any wu's for the i7.
Mine just sat there "scheduler request in progress" for several minutes. Then, I had a dozen or so tasks stuck in the "downloading" state for at least another 5 minutes. Things seem to be running okay now although I don't have much of a WU cache. I think they dial that down on the server side for the first few hours of the challenge.
These short-duration-WU challenges are always a bit frenetic at the start!! Server load goes from normal 2-3 up to 30 or so...

Seems to be that way. I've got to run. Hopefully I'll pick up some wu's at some point today. Looks like I may not be contributing much to this challenge. Pity. |
|
|

C, if you haven't picked up any WU's yet there must be something else wrong. I assume you checked your preferences, don't have any suspended tasks, use CPU always, et cetera?

Its getting a bit annoying now.. I'm constantly getting WUs, then not getting them, or failing on the upload.
bottom line, majority of the time my cores are sitting idle right now :-( any only every so often will a WU come through successfully and they'll jump right on it, only to be disappointed 10 minutes later when it fails to upload.

I have been fortunate. I see the Uploads/Downloads retries also, but none of my cores have gone dry. In fact, I am occasionally swapping out to another project to keep the heat down on a couple of my machines.

and i gave in and increased my cache size to try to avoid any more hangups waiting for work. So hopefully i start climbing now that I can get all machines with a built up cache.

Well now that I've gone ahead and gotten all my machines running finally by increasing my cache size, i'm disappointed by the limit of only 30 or so WUs at a time. :-( Doesn't really last long on my boxes with 6 cores.
Well heres to hoping the server continues to keep up with all of the traffic! :-) and go ATP! Let's rise to the top. I think we'll do well. Just by looking through some of the early standings, we're doing okay given how many server issues there have been today. I know I haven't been running near my potential yet.

Stopped at home on my way out of town. Just got the i7 running as well as a couple more notebooks. I won't be around to monitor things, but I can also remote in if necessary. Lost 6+ hours crunching time, but hopefully can help the team numbers out now.
Good luck all. |

My i7 got a series of wu's, I burned through them, but now I'm not receiving any more. I'm idle.... |
|

Work seems to be flowing my way reasonably smoothly now, just about 12 hours after the challenge start. I looked back through the logs and indeed it looks likely that my i7 ran dry a couple of times during the late afternoon (west coast time), but not for too long. The two Macs I think always, or almost always, had work. And that AWS virtual machine, well, it takes 3 or 4 hours per WU, so no worries :-)
Consolation from a team-standing perspective for running dry is that it was likely happening to everybody else too. Hate to waste the electricity though.
I've got the GTX570 and the laptop GPU idle for heat considerations... when I got home from work today, it was at least 30C inside my home (we're having a heat wave here, and I don't have air conditioning).

The good news: seems the servers have kept up and I haven't run dry at all for many hours, and WUs keep flowing through just fine!
The bad news: seems nothing is getting validated right now as I have 1800 pending PPS LLR work units since last night.

I remoted in to take a look at my machines. The notebooks have had work through the night, but the i7 was idle after each series of wu's, but is getting work within 1/2 hour or so. I'm assuming that each machine is getting an allocation of wu's per x time. Can't think of another theory.
Lesson? Look at the Challenge forum thread if having issues. I was sure it was my particular box having issues. Sorry for the posts yesterday. I'm limited by a double digit IQ....you'll have to forgive or ignore me from time to time. |

It is an English public holiday this weekend (not for the Scots who have to work for a change)...
You probably thought this was entirely lost on 'us' Yanks. But I couldn't think of a clever remark at the time. In defense of the Scots, I posit they invented the modern game of golf. A fine contribution to mankind indeed.
I was actually going to ask if any of you in the UK played golf? I'm thinking of putting together a trip to play some of the Open Championship courses in 2012. St. Andrews and Carnoustie would be on the itinerary however....
Rick, you're welcome to join as well, if the new job would allow the time off. I've got a foursome already, but the more the merrier. |
|
|
|
Hhhmmm, my missus (of whom I'm rather fonder than some of my posts may suggest) is part English, part Scot and part Estonian and was brought up in the US.
Personally I don't play golf and regard it as a good walk spoiled. Nevertheless I hope you have a great trip. And if you can detour to Southern England we'd love to see you.

Gah! Just came back from day out to find my router had fried itself - at least it blew it's own fuse, rather than the one connected to my home machines. Everything was offline for ~8 hours, so even though I had some cache I still ran dry a bit. Looks like everyone else has been having fun flattening the server!
And according to BoincStats http://boincstats.com/stats/challenge_stats.php?pr=pg&challenge=64, we are currently running in 13th place. Go Aggie!

Cause and effect. What have done of late to incite such behavior? Or are rats mischievous by nature? I'm neither a parent nor a rat owner. But I'd consider limiting their internet access for a few days. This interwebs thing can be a bad influence. |

I think some people take it a bit too seriously. I mean, go a couple of years back, Lennert and PrimeSearchTeam were flattening everyone in the challenges, for a while SETI.Germany and SETI.USA were near the top (and still are), now it's Sicituradastra, but you don't see the rest of them whining... that thread's been keeping me amused all day :)
Of course it's actually just AriZonaFan who's moaning, and he's the guy who was going to spend $20,000 to buy a machine with 8 3-year-old GPUs in it... so go figure!
Maybe we should tip off Amazon and ask them to create a specialist 'Cruncher' platform (low memory, low disk, high CPU) just for the power-crunchers, and watch the dollars roll in!

I didn't. He must not have liked what I had to say in the days long debate :-)
Even though he seems to be the only one really up in arms over it..

It did make for some comical reading before it got boring.. I have no idea why he requested me as a friend so I was just wondering. |

I didn't get one, though I was just a bit-player (one post) in the post-challenge acrimony.
Coincidentally a few months ago I got a friendship request from AriZonaMoon, during the Cinco de Mayo challenge, inviting me to join their team. I just sat on it for a few days without responding. Near the end of the challenge, I got a PM from Iain inviting me to the quirky crew known as AtP, which I accepted. I later declined AZMoon's request (was that rude?)

Naw, not rude cause I almost declined azfan's request. Just didn't make sense and of course there's no way I would even think of leaving the team. |

The overall challenge standings have just been updated: http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/TTotal.pdf - we're currently 23rd overall. Great job with only 3 challenges to go... And still a whole seven places above the cows!

And it would appear we can move up into the top 20 if we do well the next challenge. My only issue will be having my old work cores available. So far so good but I never know. |
