What a scary morning!!!

I woke up to one of my new machines turned off.. So i did the normal thing and turned it on.. :-) Only to find out that the lights in the case flash on for a second and then it was off again immediately.

It was showing all the signs of a fried CPU. :-( I was trying to disconnect each part individually and try to narrow it down, I couldn't tell if it was PSU, mobo, CPU, but it was acting primarily as CPU. Nothing would post even in those few seconds that it tried booting up.

Anyways, got lucky I think. I gutted the computer and built it just on my desk and it all seemed to work! Turns out I had a loose standoff under my motherboard that was shorting things out. I guess after a week or so of use it finally decided to become loose enough.

All is well though, I rebuilt it, and just left that standoff out of the case all together, and machine is up and running again! phew back to prime hunting

Mark is channeling Mr. Scott from the original Star Trek. When *I* open the case, there is a 50/50 chance that flames will shoot out... I stick to the software side...

Anyway, happy to hear you're back in the hunt. Well done.

NOOOOOOOOOOO I woke up again today to the same computer turned off. And it wouldn't stay on.

Right now I have just my motherboard sitting on a desk with the PSU and am trying to start it by just using a screwdriver to jump the connectors...

but sadly no luck.

I swapped for a random PSU i had sitting around, didn't help :-( I'll have to play more after work today. Looks like i'll be prime hunting at only 50% capacity today.

Not sure what might be wrong..my next step I think will be to take the ram in my 'dead' computer and put it in my good computer and see if the good one still runs. if so, swap back then idk what may be wrong.

If anything possible bad connection to the CPU from the fan..but sadly I dont have any thermal paste laying around so I can't just redo that. I need to figure this all out soon as my 30 day RMA period is almost over from newegg :-)

Mark,

I have a Gigabyte MOBO and I had to uninstall it's energy saving program to prevent it from shutting down my computer; very very frustrating to wake up and find the computer not running - it took me 3-4 days to figure this problem out.

It doesn't sound like this is the culprit as you can't get it to stay on when you're turning it on, but... just throwing it out there.

You may want to run a stress test via Prime95. If there are errors, it should find them quickly.

Mark, I know this isn't a funny thing BUT picturing you hunkered over your mobo with a screw driver some how strikes me as both funny and scary.

If I had any real suggestions it might be more helpful. However, having found a bad stand off yesterday and having problems again this morning sounds pretty serious. Hopefully you can get a replacement.

oh dont worry, it is quite the funny picture. Sadly i'm getting really good at unbuilding and rebuilding my computer in a matter of only minutes :-)

What bothers me is I built two identical computers just a week or two ago. other one is fine.

Tonight after work if i cannot get it working at all, I may see if newegg will let me RMA both the CPU and mobo. I wouldn't mind just starting fresh and new :-)

Buuut, I'm pretty sure its a mobo problem.

EDIT:

I decided to bite the bullet. I'm going to RMA the motherboard.
Now the real challenge, can they get me a new one in time for the next challenge? :-) So now tonight I get my two new GPUs and can't even use one of them!

So Mark, was just wondering if you managed to get your wayward system running and if you had those new gpu's in.

ps - I was looking in a catalog yesterday late and saw where they make a special tool - it's called "the screwdriver that replaces a hammer" or SD4HAM. Figured you might want to give it a look see :)

Well since i'm RMA'ing the motherboard on one of the computers, i'm down to only 1 of my two new boxes. (lost 6 cores right there! :-( )

So I can't use both my new GTS 450s.

But the other one, I got it up and running yesterday. Its been doing the CW Sieving, it appears that it'll average 80k-100k credit a day on it. So twice that once I get both up and running.

I'm curious to run it on PPS Sieve to compare to my 6990 just to see some of the differences to AMD vs Nvidia. I can't believe how much more efficient CUDA is for primegrid.

I've seen elsewhere in the forums where people with GTX 590s can get well over a million credit a day from sieving.. and (arguably) the AMD 6990 is a faster GPU, yet I can only get 350k-450k via it on primegrid. (Collatz and DNETC are better for AMD)

Makes me half wish I bought the 590 instead of the 6990 back in march. oh well. I'm still very happy with it :-)

Sorry about the mobo and I hope you get it replaced quickly.

PG was developed with cuda and nvidia in mind from what I understand and ATI's were added later. Too bad the 6990 won't run the cw sieves.

Hey team. I'm going to focus on overclocking the rest of the week. Both the CPU and GPU. Will need to run some long stress tests. Depending on temperatures, I may try to piece together a water-cooling loop for the fun of it. Considering going SLI on the 570's and think I'll need the water. I won't be contributing to the team numbers as much this week, but will be ready for the upcoming challenge.

Enjoy the rest of the week...

I asked a question on the forums a month or so ago about running SLI vs. non-SLI. My question was limited purely to PG/Boinc credit, not any other benefits (video, gaming, etc.). The prevailing wisdom (?) was that there was no benefit either way. Credit would be about the same.

It would be interesting to hear if your experiments prove otherwise. Be safe! Don't fry anything!

For PrimeGrid, it doesn't matter. Crossfire or SLI, since PrimeGrid runs on each individual GPU.

Now in terms of gaming, thats a whole other story :-) crossfire and sli CAN have huge benefits. However not every card or every game scale well with additional gpu's. However typically most do just fine with 2-SLI or crossfire, the scaling issue is a bigger deal when you start talking 3-way SLI / 4-way SLI or tri-fire / quad-fire.

and on a completely separate note, I finally just yesterday got around to getting my bad motherboard shipped off to newegg for replacement. I don't think I'll have it back in time for the challenge, so i'll be 1x 450GTS down, and 6 cores down for the challenge :-(

But i'll still be running my other 450 and 10-12 cores :-)

Ditto on what Gary said... be safe and don't fry the goods :)

Have no experience on over clocking a cpu but do with the gpu. The 460 seems to take over clocking well but you do need to watch the temps and having an external cooling source never hurts. I thought I read some posts on the 570 but can't seem to find them.

Good luck with your experiment.

Rick

edit: just to know since I only have a single gpu but is SLI where you connect multiple gpu's together to form a single unit?

SLI & Primegrid:

To the best of my knowledge, there is no benefit in running two cards via SLI.
I know that the manual sieving efforts (tpsieve) have the ability to use dual GPU's (SLI) with only a negligible loss of performance (maybe 1% speed loss), but really all it's doing is splitting the sieving range(s) and assigning blocks to each GPU to crunch, then it takes data and puts it together in results file...

First results on GPU overclocking. (Wanted to do this first to see if I wanted to stay with this card or SLI-up with another card.) Seems these cards are severely limited in their voltage range. Good thing for me, as the card would be a smoldering mess by now. Was able to obtain without too much effort, 880 Mhz graphics clock, 2200 Mhz memory, at about 1.1 v. Ran a bit hot with 3dMark11 benchmark. Mid-high 70's C. Decided to back off to 800Mhz graphics clock (running BOINC at 69 degrees C --ambient about 19 degrees right now), until I get a water block on the card. This isn't much of a gain, but it comes at no risk in my mind. Going to let BOINC run on the GPU for 24 hours straight.

Next onto the CPU tomorrow.

Interesting to read notes on SLI and BOINC. I'm doing the SLI for 3D stuff and also my 12 year old nephew, his little brother and their friends like to game on my hardware. I let them do network parties here on weekends. One 570 can handle any game out there at the highest settings....but SLI is cool in their eyes, and this Uncle is happy to accommodate. We actually built out his new rig from scratch....he installed/configured everything. I just provided oversight.....and pizza.

When it comes to BOINC and overclocking, keep in mind that there really are no gains in memory clock speed. Only core clock speed.

So, if voltage is an issue, lower the memory speed and you probably could still pull out a bit more on the core clock speed.

And over all you end up lowering the temp of the card :-D Sadly its the only way I can keep my overclocked 6990 from burning up. even so it still works at around 90C.

Wow those are some high temps. Guess I must be lucky since my 460 is overclocked to 1839 but runs around 65-66 c . Of course I have the case open and a fan blowing on it constantly to give it some real good air flow.

I tried lowering the memory but it didnt seem to help me even though it's helped others.

On the Nvidia's and PG actually it's the shader clock that makes any difference. The core and memory have little to no affect. As Mark said you can lower the memory to save on both power and heat. I don't really change the core that much since on mine it seems to slow the gpu down and not save any temp.

Thanks for the advice. In my hurry yesterday, I actually set things back to reference clocks. I won't have time until the weekend to OC again. I'm interested in optimizing for FPS in the end. I think I'm comfortable running in low 70's C under load.

The 6990 is a great card but can run hot. I know there are affordable self-contained water cooling kits now out for GTX 500 series. Not sure about the 6990. I know there are tons of water blocks for that card. But building a loop is an involved process, a bit of a leaning curve and pricey.

yeah I haven't messed with any water cooling yet...however my next 'main' build I think i'll learn more about it and invest. But I'm still going to hold off for the 2011 socket i7s. I have enough toys to entertain me until then. :-)

Maybe by then the 6990 will drop in price and I can pick up a 2nd one for quad fire :-D

Great news everyone! Got the motherboard installed, and the computer is back up and running after two full weeks off the grid.

Working on installing a GTS 450 in it right now, and hopefully here in a few moments I'll have my "AMD6-1" computer back on PrimeGrid. :-)

Its a good feeling being back on full capacity with 18 cores! ATP FTW!

I've just put Aggie on the MEGA port. Only another 4 cores but with a name like that what could go wrong?

Woke up in the middle on the night and happened to glance at my computer and there was that big ugly BSOD. Looks like I'll be posting a handful fewer MEGA wu's today. Looks like AtP is holding their own on that port. Nice work guys.

Those help a lot. Everyone on the team is contributing significant points to MEGA now and AtP is cranking out the points.

Just out of curiosity, I running 8 wu's at a time + 1 GPU GFN524288. Each MEGA work unit is taking between 3:20- 4:23. Gary et al, what kind of times are you getting? I'm trying to figure out the optimum number of wu's to run.

Windows BLUE SCREEN of DEATH. In my case, I think it is RAM. Have been playing with overclocking it a bit.

For more than 24 hours, I've been running 4 MEGA tasks, 4 Boinc TRP Sieve tasks, and 1 GPU Boinc CW Sieve task on the big box. I looked at the last four MEGA tasks on each thread and two more each early in the runs (24 tasks total) and the times range from 2:11 to 3:42, with an average of 2:58.

This is on a i7 2600K o/c to 4.1, HT on, running Ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks Gary. Those are good times on the mega wu's. Is the 'Big Box' dedicated essentially to primegrid? How much other work are you doing on the box throughout the day or evening?

I'm using my i7 for other tasks at night simultaneous to the prpnet tasks. I might just use the Mac for these other tasks, so I can get some good benchmarks on the i7.

Cheers-- C

I overclocked MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr II/OC GPU 850MHz memory 2200MHz original voltage average tem is 76c.
For BOINC it`s stable (under linux).
It have worked two month whithout problems.

Hi Tarmo,

That's a nice overclock on out-of-the-box voltage. MSI makes a nice GPU.

Question: Do you see a difference in the load on your GPU between BOINC sieve tasks and prpnet geneferCUDA tasks? Is the temperature different between the two?

Do you live in Tallinn?

I`m running only BOINC tasks.
GPU utilization is 100% estimated app speed is 808,21GFLOPS/sec

And yes I live in Tallinn.

If you ever run any prpnet tasks I'd be interested to know if your temps drop. I haven't really studied this and it is just anecdotal, but the load seemed less on geneferCUDA tasks. I could be wrong.

Tallinn is a beautiful city. I think the Old Town is one of the hidden gems of Europe.

For reasons I've never understood everyone is listed as a member if you look at the BOINCSTATS > Aggie The Pew > Prime Grid page http://boincstats.com/stats/team_graph.php?pr=pg&id=2280 but not the one you show.

I overclocked MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr II/OC GPU 850MHz memory 2200MHz original voltage average tem is 76c.
For BOINC it`s stable (under linux).
It have worked two month whithout problems.

Tarmo,

I also have a MSI GTX 570. It's running at 786/2100/1572, which is the way it came from the factory, and I'm running Linux too (ubuntu 10.10). What tools do you use to overclock? I'm not sure I want to push the card too much harder as it is at 80C under full PPS Sieve load already; these summer days ambient temperature inside is 25C or so. Just interested in what the options are...

There are no tools for linux. Nvclock is to old. I flashed bios with self modified rom under windows.

My card have very good cooling but still it's very important that airflow inside case is exactly right.
You can get all tools for bios manipulation
