The problem is in the title. The proth Prime search on my ATI radeon 4850 fails to start and crashes immediately. Main CPU is a Core i7 920 running BOINC 6.12.26 x64 on Vista SP1.
So my GPU is only crunching dnetc instead, to bad for PrimeGrid. |

Are you sure you have the correct drivers for the card installed?
Proth Prime Search (Sieve) requires advanced drivers, either the APP driver (Click Here - Although I am pretty sure these are not available for 4xxx cards.) If not, you are required to install the ATI Stream SDK (Click Here) before being able to run the application.

Did you install the APP or the SDK?

Well as I said dnetc is happily crunching, so the driver, even though not the very latest, is advanced enough. I don't intend to do development so not sure why the SDK would be required. If it is just to run I consider it clumsy programming. |

Primegrid used OpenCL, whereas DNetc uses CAL. Two different types of programs because of what Primegrid needs. You need the advanced driver otherwise OpenCL is not installed and you will not be able to do the Primegrid work.
Prime number crunching is much deeper than that DNetc is doing.

If not, you are required to install the ATI Stream SDK before being able to run the application. Those did the trick. Thanks.

Did you install the newer ATI drivers? If so, you need to downgrade as OpenCL is not supported for the HD4xxx series cards in the latest drivers.

Damn...now I cannot find that link. With ATI/AMD these days you have to stay on your toes. For example, the latest SDK (v2.5) includes 64-bit double-precision stuff for the Cypress chips, but not for either the older 64-bit capable chips nor the newer Cayman chips.
Anyway, I'll continue to see if I can find that link that I read (more than a month ago) and will post it when/if I find it again.
The bottom line, however, is that the HD 4xxx series is not fully supported for OpenCL by ATI/AMD (it has always been listed as Beta-support only). Numerous reports of issues with the newer SDK's have been reported with these cards with newer drivers such that it would appear that Catalyst 10.12/SDK2.3 is the most stable driver release for the cards when using OpenCL applications.
