SoB LLR Bronze: Earned 10,000 credits (13,000)PPS Sieve Amethyst: Earned 1,000,000 credits (1,288,984)
Message 32794 - Posted: 13 Feb 2011 | 7:10:45 UTC

I am getting "computation errors" by the dozen after only a few seconds of run-time. (Reference computer ID 174029.) The WU report is invariably of the form:

Sieve started: 25004806000000000 <= p < 25004812000000000 Thread 0 starting Detected 160 multiprocessors (800 SPUs) on device 0. Computation Error: no candidates found for p=25004806000132379 between 2629725 and 3000000. 01:54:08 (1056): called boinc_finish

This is running under Windows 7 64-bit with the latest Catalyst 11.1 package.

Any ideas?

Maybe a bug in OpenCL? Have you tried an older APP-driver?

I used to get the same thing when I also ran my GPU along with boinc'ing on my CPU.
If you are using boinc on your cpu, turn it off and see if the gpu finishes without errors. If it does slowly raise the amount of CPU threads used by boinc. On my i7 I can only use 4 out of the 8 threads for boinc while running the GPU.

The problem with OpenCL seems to be a higher cpu load to get the gpu filled and/or not all calculation can be done on gpu via OpenCL.

It's worse than that - between SDK 2.1 and 2.2, ATI/AMD altered behaviour (perhaps to fix a bug) by introducing a busy-wait i.e. the least efficient pile of crud on the planet - 100% usage to continually check that there is still nothing to do - I haven't met a busy-wait in almost two decades. It has coloured my future purchasing decisions such that they need to wait until all of the competition has annoyed me to the same level before I'll ever consider buying their h/w (which is fine - unlike the drivers) ever again.
