Should I overclock?

Definitely not.

Across all three of your machines, which I'm assuming are actually multiple partitions on the same machine, you have not a single completed WU still in the database, but you do have several computation errors. Overclocking will simply exacerbate that problem.

My advice would be to start running sieves instead of LLRs. They seem to be easier on CPUs -- my guess is they have a poorer locality of reference, resulting in far more cache misses, which makes the CPU idle more. That, in turn, makes the CPU run cooler, which helps with stability and reduces errors.

Since all of your WUs are either overdue, errored out, or canceled, I'd recommend trying to run only a single WU at a time, and select only the shorter WUs in your preferences.

Some of my computers are slower than your Pentium D, but I run shorter WUs on them.

There's two types of tasks right now, sieves and primality tests. Everything that says LLR is a primality test. The sieves all say sieve.

The LLRs include both the longest (SoB) and the shortest (PPS) types of WUs. Normally, the web page where you select the applications tells you how long they run for, but that information is temporarily suppressed right now due to residual server load problems from Sunday's challenge.

The run-times shown are the average for PrimeGrid, and your Pentium will run about double what that average is.

Since the numbers aren't available at the moment, here's the approximate run times you could expect on your Pentium for the various tasks:

LLRs:

Proth Prime Search: 20 minutes
Sophie Germain Prime Search: 40 minutes
The Riesel Problem: 15 hours
321 Prime Search: 32 hours
Cullen Prime Search: 6 days
Woodall Prime Search: 6 days
Prime Sierpinski Problem: 9 days
Seventeen or Bust: 30 days

Sieves:

Prime Sierpinski Problem / Seventeen or Bust: 1.5 hours
321 Prime Search: 6 hours
Cullen Woodall Prime Search: 6 hours
Proth Prime Search: 7 hours
The Riesel Problem: 10 hours

The LLRs tend to make CPUs run hotter, whereas the sieves are easier on the CPU and it will run cooler. Since your computer appears to be have some computational errors, I'd recommend running the sieves.

LLRs are only available in 32-bit versions since there's no benefit when running in 64 bit mode. The 32-bit LLRs will run on 64 bit machines; but there's no advantage from doing so.

Sieves come in either 32 or 64 bit versions which are automatically selected based on your computer, and the 64 bit version IS faster. The times above are. if I remember correctly, representative of the 64 bit version. The 32 bit version will take about 70% longer, I believe.

I see they've turned the average run-times back on, so the actual numbers are now visible on the application selection page. To get reasonable estimates for your machine, you should double the times shown

Except for the Seventeen or Bust LLR task. It recently jumped to a significantly higher n number range, and the tasks got about 1/3 longer. The average run time doesn't seem to have caught up to that change yet, so the time shown is a bit optimistic in my opinion. Or maybe it's just that only very fast computers are even trying that one. Anyway, you could expect about an 800 hour run time for this one, about 30 to 40 days. The deadline is only 28 days, so it's not really a viable option anyway.

You're attempting to return a WU that expired four and a half months ago. That WU is long gone, and I don't think you'll get credit for it. Certainly, it's of no value any longer to the PrimeGrid project as the WU got sent to someone else after yours exceeded the deadline.

There isn't really much point in attempting to run BOINC unless you return the WUs reasonably promptly. You're unlikely to get credit for it, so all you're doing is wasting your electricity and delaying the eventual return of a valid result to the PrimeGrid server.

Not to discourage you, but you might want to rethink how (or even if) you participate in BOINC projects. You really need to have a plan for returning the completed WUs by their deadlines. If that's not possible in your situation, for whatever reason, you might want to try another project that has much more generous deadlines, such as CPDN (http://climateprediction.net/). Their deadlines are are much, much, longer, and they actually don't care about the deadlines. Their WUs are, however, much longer than the ones here.[/url]
