Has anyone tried running a Intel Atom setup here at Primegrid?

Intel used to be "king-of-the-hill" on pure number crunching - and if Atom has adopted that - I migth actually be worth it to run one here.

Have being sniffing through alot of users to see if I could spot one....But no luck so far...

Best regards,

I had one Atom 230 hooked up to Einstein and wasn't disappointed by the produced results: A bit slower than a Pentium M with the same clock but only 45 Euros for the CPU inclusive the board.
Alas these results aren't transfereable to primegrid i think, over here the Pentium 4 is better than at Einstein.
You could give the Atom a try and use it as a SAN-processor afterwards. ;)

Over at another project, Einstein maybe, they decided the Atom was pretty pathetic for
crunching. Two people each ran one for over a week and it was like running a PII, it was
REALLY bad! I mean it finished the units on time, just not in a reasonable amount of time
compared to the rest of machines. They are fairly new machines, these new low price things,
so no one knows yet how they will hold up under crunching for the long term.

Best regards,

I tried a few PPS llr's a few months back on an Intel Atom. They took well over an hour. And that was when they were averaging 6-10 minutes on most machines. It's just not worth it.

Thanks for all the replys!!

Looks like Atom has it's charm...But maybe not suited for crunching..

I will lurk around some more to see if I can find more info...

My wife wants to buy one with our tax return this year, so i setup Ubuntu Linux
on a laptop, I am typing this on it, to so she could see if she liked it or not. She
says she is okay with it but can't figure out how to do much besides the usual
stuff, which is okay with me!! The ones that come with Linux are cheaper and
come with more memory, or are upgradeable to more memory. Seems Microsoft
has a contract that you can only put 1 gig of memory in a machine if you put
Windows XP Home as the OS!!! Pain the butts MS!!! Gotta control everything!

Arhh...Well I am not thinking about the laptops....But more this:

http://www.intel.com/Products/Desktop/Motherboards/D945GCLF/D945GCLF-overview.htm

This one can be cooled without fans...

I played around with the board a while back. (but sold to a friend because his server broke...) But I loved that board and would like to buy one again...I could crunch both SETI, RCN and other stuff just fine. But of course you need more than just a 1-2 day deadline. I think that doing AP26 combined with maybe the small LLR WU' s could be fine...

BTW. Please note that the board is the Atom 330...Naitive dual-core at 1.6Ghz. I would not even consider the N270, which is a single core...

Agreed the N270 is a single core although with HT, but not suitable for a desktop at all!

I have one of the dual core Atom 330s (D945GCLF2) w/ hyperthreading and I haven't tried it out on Primegrid yet, but it's doing OGR alright @ distributed.net. For a low power dual core CPU, I can't complain. The motherboard chipset uses more power (and needs a fan) than the CPU does. :)

Intel Pentium M 1600 => 2380 s for ~3.4 credits => ~123 cr/day
Intel Atom 330 => 3450 s for ~2.5 credits => ~250 cr/day
Intel Atom 330 => 8000 s for ~3.4 credits => ~150 cr/day

Seems like the speed of the Atom 330 with HT enabled is on par with a Pentium M 1600 or better depending ot the WU, this is a 2003 laptop. The Atom 330 costs less and consumes as much.

Okay I bought an Asus eee pc with the Atom N270 cpu in it. I loaded Boinc and PG and it got a stack of units and thought it would take about an hour to crunch each one. I left the HT on so it is crunching 2 at a time, but it is taking just over 4 hours for each unit!! The pc came with Windows XP Home so only 1 gig of ram. I have the 2 gig replacement chip on order, hopefully it will help a little. I like the pc, it is fun, small, the screen is a 10" one but that is measured diagonally and the screen is a widescreen not a square one. The keyboard is not hard, I am not a touch typist or anything, it is fast, it all works just like and other XP Home computer! Mine came with a 160gig HD, although it is partitioned into 4 different parts! I can only access 2 of the parts, both about 60 to 70 gig, the rest are the hidden restore part and something else. It is nice and I like it but it will not be an everyday pc. It will be for trips, that kind of thing, Boinc is already set to 'no new work'.

What's wrong with it taking 4 hours to do a work unit? That's 6 new work units a day you wouldn't have done otherwise. :)

Nothing I was just hoping for a bit more. It's okay the pc does what it is intended to do for me. I did not buy it to run it 24/7.
