Welcome to the Project Staging Area (PSA)!
The PSA was created to research, test, and prepare future projects for PrimeGrid BOINC. It has also expanded to include additional projects that will not enter BOINC.
While we attempt to do most of the prep work internally, some efforts are so large that we need the assistance of the community. Manual cobblestones are available. See below for distribution policy.
Sieving
A good sieve leads to a better prime search. There are several projects being coordinated:
For more information about sieving, please see the Sieving topic forum.
PRPNet
This is the primality testing side of the PSA. PrimeGrid uses PRPNet, developed by Mark Rodenkirch. It is very similar to BOINC but is used specifically for prime finding. There is no GUI. Instead, it runs in a dos window or Linux terminal. Once set up, it runs and tests automatically. It's very simple to run...just download and unzip the file for your OS, edit a few lines in the prpclient.ini file, and run. You'll be crunching in less than 5 minutes. :)
Please see PRPNet if you're interested in helping out. There you can find more information on how to run the client. Additionally, you can see what projects are currently available.
Thank you for your help. Best of Luck finding primes! :)
Receiving Credit
Manual BOINC cobblestones are earned while participating in both PRPNet and the manual sieves. They are awarded in batches and then averaged out based off your current RAC. This is done so your daily credit more reflects the type of work you're doing. One day spikes do not represent that. Daily distributions will continue to rise each day until most of your credit is distributed...then it will level off as steady work continues to come in.
The sieves
Once COMPLETE ranges are moved from the main reservation post to the Archive post, credit is calculated and applied. This process is done every 2-4 weeks depending on how active the sieves are and how many COMPLETE ranges are piling up. Right now, it's averaging about once every 1-2 weeks.
PRPNet
Credit is calculated and applied once every 3-4 weeks. Right now, it's averaging about once every 1-2 weeks.
