Bottled Water No Purer Than Tap
At nearly 2,000 times the price of tap water, bottled water is often extolled as the purer of the two, but a new study shows that some leading brands of the bottled beverage are just as contaminated as water from your kitchen sink. Lab tests of 10 bottled water brands detected 38 contaminants including bacteria, caffeine, acetaminophen, solvents, fertilizer, plastic-making chemicals, and the radioactive element strontium. While several of these substances may have come from the tap water some of these companies use for their bottled water, others may have leached from the plastic bottles themselves

I bet London tap water is pure. Bearing in mind the number of kidneys it has been filtered through by the time we get to drink it it should be.

I was really pleased to see your post tho'. IMV bottled water has to be one of the bigger cons going (eg see here: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0304-04.htm and don't even get me started on how ungreen (Ed: Is that a word?) shipping it around the world is.

(Or how it is bad to end sentences with a preposition!)

India Joins Moon Space Race
This week’s launch of India’s Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter put the world’s second most populous country into the Asian space race, which last year saw both China and Japan send unmanned spacecrafts into orbit around the Moon. This is the first time India has sent a spacecraft beyond the Earth's orbit. The satellite, whose name means "Moon Craft" in ancient Sanskrit, will orbit the Moon for two years, gathering information that will help map the lunar surface as well as the minerals that lie below

Is the TV Remote Making You Sick?
With cold and flu season fast approaching, researchers are warning people to beware of their refrigerator doors as well as TV remotes, telephones, light switches, salt and pepper shakers, and even doorknobs. These commonly-touched surfaces can harbor the germs left by cold sufferers for two days or longer. Researchers have even found that germs can survive in hotel rooms for at least a day and be picked up by the next visitor who checks in. Frequent hand washing, using hand sanitizer, and wearing surgical masks are three practices that can help prevent the spread of viruses

Immune Reaction May Play Role in Epilepsy

Researchers have found that a reaction between immune system cells and blood vessels in the brain could play a key role in epilepsy. Epilepsy, a seizure disorder, affects about 1% of the world’s general population, and while current drug treatments can control seizures in most people, they can also cause severe side effects. This study found that, in mice, seizures stimulate the release of a chemical that causes infection-fighting white blood cells to stick to blood vessels. Molecules released by the immune cells then cause damaging inflammation and contribute to future seizures. Drugs that target this process may one day help treat epilepsy

Maggots as Good as Hydrogel for Leg Ulcers

Researchers have concluded that maggots are no better than the standard therapy when it comes to treating leg ulcers. Because maggots eat dead and rotting tissue but leave healthy tissue alone, they have been used to treat wounds for hundreds of years. In the first study to compare maggots with a standard wound-cleaning product, researchers found that while the flesh-eating creatures do clean leg ulcers more quickly than normal treatment, this does not lead to faster healing. Patients whose venous leg ulcers were treated with maggots also experienced more pain than those who received the traditional hydrogel treatment.

Onions a New Source of Green Power

Gills Onions, the largest fresh onion processor in the US, has found an unusual use for the edible bulbs—energy production. Approximately 35 to 40 percent of each onion is discarded during processing. Initially, this waste was hauled back out to the fields for composting, but recently, the company developed a system that uses onion juice and bacteria to produce green energy. The bacteria feed on sugar in the onion juice and produce methane gas that is then sent to fuel cells. The $9.5 million project will likely save the company $700,000 a year in energy costs and cut its annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30,000 tons.

China Launches National Organ Donor System

In an attempt to reduce the country’s dependence on the organs of executed prisoners, who currently comprise the majority of its donors, China has launched its first national organ donation system. The system is initially being introduced in 10 provinces and cities but will eventually span the country. In China, voluntary donations remain far below demand, with only about 130 people pledging to donate their organs since 2003. Nearly 1.5 million people in China are in need of organ transplants. Officials hope that the new system will encourage people to become donors and eliminate the illegal organ trafficking trade there.

Shroud of Turin a Hoax?

One of Christianity's most disputed relics, the Shroud of Turin bears the image of a crucified man and is revered by some Christians as the burial cloth of Jesus. It has, for many years, been the subject of intense scientific study and debate, but a group of Italian scientists now says it has proven that the relic is indeed a medieval fake. In 1988, carbon dating results dated the shroud to the 13th or 14th century, calling its authenticity into question, yet scientists remained baffled by how the image on it was produced. The Italian group says it has now solved that mystery by creating a reproduction of the shroud using materials and techniques available during the Middle Ages

Stem Cell Treatment Restores Vision

Italian doctors completely restored sight to 82 out of 107 eyes damaged by chemical burns and partially restored vision in 14 others using patients' own stem cells harvested from healthy eye tissue. Researchers multiplied the stem cells in a lab and then placed them into the burned eyes, causing new, healthy corneal tissue to grow. Within months, many of the patients were able to see again. The technique cannot help people with damage to the optic nerve or macular degeneration, which involves the retina, or people who are completely blind in both eyes, because they lack the healthy tissue necessary for the transplant.
